Gifted (2017)
Unrealistic
Some good quality touching scenes. Excellent performance by McKenna Grace. Solid performance by Jenny Slate. Chris Evans does a commendable job but mostly stays in his typical hunky, free spirit, type cast.
Too much of the movie revolved around a ridiculously executed custody battle. The compromised agreement reached between the plaintiff and defendent was unbelievable. Family courts always seek to preserve families. I cannot imagine any scenario where a judge would place a child in foster care over an uncle and grandmother who seemingly are both capable, safe choices. The foster storyline was implausible and forced a traumatic, ridiculously sad play on viewers tears.
Young Mary's giftedness gets stretched from child prodigy to pure fantasy.
There are some touching parts to this story however they largely get destroyed by glaring absurdities.
Wish Man (2019)
What Could Have Been
This movie felt like a missed opportunity. The telling and execution of it are so disorganized and uninspired: Lazy script, weak casting, dis-organized storylines, and too many storylines.
Way too much of the movie was wasted on the bogus civil suit that ultimately was cleared up by less investigative work than a Scooby Doo cartoon.
The crash scene was an absolute disaster. After a pitiful exhibit of "CPR", a stranger with no known medical background, pronounces him dead. Even worse his partner takes her word for it and radios headquarters "Frank's gone.". Suddenly he just wakes up and is immediately back to normal. I think it is much more plausible that he suffered a concussion and passed out.
The love story was contrite and not nearly developed enough to be believable.
An angelic man whom rescues him as a boy and teaches him the importance of helping people, which ultimately becomes what he inspires to do, has maybe 3 minutes of air time.
I could go on... Some people will love this movie and cry and I can understand why. For me though i just couldnt take it's effort serious enough to be moved by it.
