Ad Astra (2019)
Very Good "Slow Scifi"
I love long slow sci-fi movies. I'm "boredom-proof" from these specific movies. I loved Solaris, Sunshine, 2001, Life (more agitated but with that strange feeling and fabulous end) ... and I loved Ad Astra.
Pitt is not my cup of tea and long close up on faces doesn't give much latitude to act, with the risk of overacting but here ... that was perfect. I guess it'a kind of movie to watch on a certain state of mind (not the Star Wars or Alien one).
I thought the movie would end (no spoiler) slightly before the end but finally that end makes sense. Both would have though.
I didn't find the graphics as stunning as said in other reviews but great and ... on par.
I'm not much concerned by the perfect scientific accuracy (who could 😄 ?) in that case so that was ok too.
Try this movie, it's largely worth the two hours without neon saber fights, and usual scifi tricks.
A good rating because it's well made and I think that we still need these kind of movies.
Westworld (2016)
Why ?
The problem here is that the original Westworld (with Brinner) had already exposed the point they try to expose here : Men vs Robots. HI vs AI. But ... if you want something, more ... modern (i.e. Not Boomer) cold and inhuman (cos you don't know old movies), go for Gattaca (it's old, but less). The feeling will be the same but it only lasts 2 hours, and it's quite smart and innovative.
So, except if you like Product Placement, ridiculous sound effects, stupid Gizmos, the Guy from Breaking Bad (3 facial expressions available - happy, stressed, neutral -), cheap cyber erotism (oooh), go for it. It's a kind of Russian Salad of anything sci-fi. For the sake of it.
And about the Meaning of Life, both computers in Hitch Hiker of the Galaxy and the Prisoner, have given THE Answer back then. Or almost.
Don't waste your time and watch Yul Brinner's movie or "Moon".
This show makes me think of when you got only bits of things remaining from the week in your fridge on a sunday evening and try to cheat yourself as thinking it will be yummy.
The Flight Attendant (2020)
Unbearable ...
Unbearable. From the borrowed ideas from old movies or TV Shows (well, not known by Gen-z so why be ashamed ?), to the concept of the "Genius Beautiful Drunkard" who finally can make it ... to the ridiculously excessive sound effects (it's just a comedy, Guys, relax) this thing is a complete waste of time. Just like "Succession". Complete void covered with Glitter. But it shows.
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
Still ...not bad at all
Careful with cult movies. They often don't grow old nicely. The version I've seen is the one with the alternate cyan/green filter and a more contemporary (1930-40 ? More "contemporary classic) music than the first version, if that means sth to you. And I guess muscic helped me watch the slowest and least interesting parts but anyway... Nosferatu was awesome, again. Beautiful, raw, and a pleasure to watch. I loved the way they played, as "ridiculous" it might seem today (but what's the point would be to have Brad Pitt playing on it ?) This movie is still perfect. The ultimate vampire movie. But my point here is : chose a version with the right music, it might change everything.
Super Mario Bros. (1993)
Relax and enjoy !
Funny to see a movie shot down seriously by people playing little cartoon plumbers on a screen. LOL SMB is to be taken for what it is, just a "fun scifi movie". It has cool ideas, stupid stuff too, but all in all you end up veing in good mood having watched such thing. Just like the "Hitchhiker Guide", "Guardiand of the Galaxy" etc. Relax, grab the popcorns and enjoy. It's FUN stuff only, not an Ingmar Bergman movie ... and when it's finished you can go back to your video game. 😄
Succession (2018)
If you take pleasure at ...
... Watching (stupid spoiled) people being humiliated, cheating etc ...
Or mybe identify to arrogant and egocentric wealthy people ?
What else ? Nada.
No (serious) plot. No Charisma (Dallas did, maybe because the actors were ... well, "beautiful" ...). Bad acting and dialogs ... and except for outdoors shooting looking like a billionnaire resort ad, it smells like dead and empty.
This show must be quite cheap to produce. It fells like it anyway.
I watched a few episond though ... just to be sure, but ... no.
Coincoin et les z'inhumains (2018)
Just Brilliant
I guess you must be European (or at least Belgian or French) to really get that kind of Humour. It's no Brit Humour, neither American. Situations and Characters are hilarious and surrealistic. It's french but looks more like some belgian kind of Show. Just relax, don't expect Hollywood stuff. Don't look for coherence (that's not the point here) and enjoy. Coincoin is like an Albert Dupontel Movie (watch these too) or "Bernie" (around '80) but were all the actors would be Dupontel. Trust me, make the effort. It's worth it.
White Lines (2020)
Very good if ...
... you can make it past that empty Ibiza / party goers world ...
Well played, very nice and irritating casting LOL and a quite twisted plot. Worth the time spent to watch it.
Good point : the Director didn't fell too much into the Ibiza Documentary Cliché too (i.e. boobs and sex everywhere)
Life (2017)
Brilliantly ... raw
I loved this movie. I loved Sunshine too. Alien 1 too and 2001.
Characters are of no interest. But so are scientists, astronauts, me, and you. Just humans and it's not so consistent. That lack of thickness (and therefore focused interest) helps us to keep the necessary distance to appreciate more of the plot. Or what is a so simple story that you are surprised that the movie finishes so fast and that you sticked to it all along. But you do. And that's the magic. Think about how much FX or "romance parts" or whatever have many directors to put into their movies to keep us till the end. Not here.
The Alien is awesome. No jaws, no uber-fx, just a very strong but soft touch, almost cute killer and very smart. Once again, it's not a movie about a monster.
So, mix all this in a raw but "not so sordid" environment (which highlights the few FXs) brutal (but dry) spaceship action, a great smart end (I'm tempted to spoil but no ), no fillings (there's no useless scenes) and you're good to go. I loved that movie. I loved Sunshine. I loved Alien but was bored a few time, I loved 2001 but it was so boring (whatever the intellectual hype about this and that). Life's end will make you think too especially in the light of 2020 . And if I'm wrong you will have just lost 1:45 of your precious life. :)
El hoyo (2019)
Interesting ... but ...
This one's interesting. There's a lot of showoff meat around the plot stick but ... you want to finish watchimg it just to see. It's neither a philosophical masterpiece or brand new social analisys but more a big shortcut to already exploited subjects.
But the idea remains interesting, and the show well done (nice decorum, actors don't overplay, fx are good and not too excessive) but the end ... let's say the end is a justification for something finally quite simple.
But it's worth seeing
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Please stop with the sequels and reloads
Yah, ok .. there's no more ideas in the movie business so ...why not Dumbo digitalized, or that ... ? A big b.s. not worth a penny.
Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 (2017)
Loved it ... but not as a sequel
I loved this movie. But once I watched it per se and not as a sequel. And I think this one is far better on many aspect (easthetically, actors, etc) than it's elder.
The original was cult (overrated, IMO, even when it was released) and this one won't ... but it's a better movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Brilliant : is what should havd become Star Wars
Brilliant, technologically impressive, a lots of (interesting) ideas per minute and ... very funny (great dialogs). Don't mind the plot (usual scifi pretext to have fun 😄) A winner ! Better than the first one IMO but both are worth ...
