State Fair (1945)
Perfect!
1 May 2007
Brandy-spiked homemade mincemeat, patent-leather farmhouses, candy apples, cotton candy, roller coasters, budding romances, and stunning technicolor.....all drenched in Rogers and Hammerstein's unmistakable sound........a recipe for success? You didn't have any doubts, did you?? I rate this 1945 classic a solid ten out of ten stars. The awful remake in 1962 is a prime example of why remakes should never be attempted. This movie follows in the tradition of other great 1940's Fox musicals such as Down Argentine Way and Moon Over Miami. Don't you dare listen to any negative reviews of this wonderful movie. One of the reviewers commented that there wasn't much of a plot. Are you kidding me?? The plot is fantastic. Apparently, some people just don't get it. It's intentionally made to be light and fun. Don't over-analyze it. After all, it's a musical for crying out loud. In my opinion, this movie is simply one of the best musicals ever made. I like it more and more every time I see it if that's even possible! It's right up there in quality with The Sound Of Music. Walter Lang, the director, masterfully captures the magic with incredible flair in this innocent, mid-century gem. The songs are infectious and beautiful....some of the best Rogers and Hammerstein have ever written....and that's the truth! The movie will leave you feeling great. Watch it! You'll see what I mean. After all......it's a grand night for singing!!

Fantastic movie!!

This movie is the pure essence of the idea 'movies the way they used to be made'. I honestly can't find any fault with this movie.......the plot, music, scenery, acting......all perfect! I'm so glad that it finally came out on DVD. Thank goodness we have great movies like this to watch instead of the incredible garbage that is out there today. This is Hollywood at its finest......and the vivid technicolor photography makes you feel like you're in 1940 Miami. Don Ameche gives a fabulous performance and Betty Grable's dance numbers are wonderful. This is a must-have DVD.....for anyone who enjoys class, style, great acting and wonderful music! This is absolutely among my favorite musicals along with Easter Parade and Holiday Inn.

great movie!

When I first saw this movie, I thought that it was a very interesting concept.....and I still do. I especially like the part where the police/FBI are observing the house in question from the attic of the neighbor's home. And, the look on Humphrey Bogart's face when his brother, Hal, expresses his discontent at where life has brought him so far.....is a 'look' only Bogie can muster. In short, this is a daring, exciting movie. It all takes place in Anywhere, U.S.A. (actually, Indianapolis) and life in suburbia would never be the same for the Hilliard crew. I highly recommend this movie. This is not the usual film that is mentioned when talking about Humphrey Bogart, but it's one of his best. It's a worthy addition to anyone's home movie collection!

Fabulous comedy!
27 June 2006
This is one of the classic comedies of its era! It's a simple comedy with a unique idea......a movie the whole family can see and enjoy....unlike the movies which come out today. I'm not sure why today's movie makers think we want to hear the language they put in almost every movie. Get a grip.......we don't want to hear it! My mother remembers actually seeing this film in the theaters and told me that everybody was howling! The crowd apparently loved it and you will too! Clifton Webb is perfect as Mr. Belvedere and this may have been his best performance ever. Although, some people may argue with me on that point, considering he was so great in 'Laura'. I can't believe Sitty Pretty isn't out on DVD!!
