Black Adam (2022)
Hyped Letdown
Dwayne Johnson hyped this movie up as if it would go on to be a superhero movie masterpiece. It was nothing more than a plain superhero action movie. It's a basic story with parts of the plot introduced without any explanation. Character development was just as disappointing with a failed attempt at emotional character development. I know that Dwayne Johnson poured a lot into this movie and that it's a passion project of sorts, but it's frustrating how misleading he was in his promotion of the film. The hype he built was undelivered and as a result, I'll be sure to pay no attention to his hype next time and take everything he promises with a grain of salt.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Disney + Politics
Disney has become obsessed with telling its audience how the world is and how it should be instead. Their messages aren't always wrong, it's just unfitting. If they want to preach politics, then make documentaries or a series focused on that, or at least be subtle about it. I tuned in to watch action and superheroes fighting bad guys. Instead, I was distracted by its overt political speeches and subliminal messaging. It didn't feel like I was watching my childhood super heroes. I felt like I just learned about the political views of Disney's executives and their writers. People want to immerse themselves in the cinema to enjoy something beyond reality. It would be nice to have that, but it's just not the case anymore.
Born in China (2019)
Condemning propaganda while spreading its own
As a documentary it was very informative with insight from many that went through, enforced, and were victims of the one child policy. The film however did not take a bipartisan informative stance, which would allow viewers to form their own opinions. The filmmaker used a nations tragedy to promote her own ideas. The documentary focused on the tragedy of families having their babies killed, which the filmmaker managed to turn into a statement about how awful it was for Chinese women to not have a choice in the killing of their babies. She went further and said that the decision should be left to the mother. In other words, a dead baby under a bridge (as depicted in the film) is awful if the mother had no choice in the decision, however if it was her choice, a dead baby under a bridge is acceptable.
