Elden Ring (2022 Video Game)
Breathtaking adventure that slightly falls apart.
14 April 2022
As said in the title its truly a breathtaking game, the graphics, bosses, beautiful scenery and weapons will all pleasantly surprise you. It seems there's something around every single corner, whether that thing wants to kill you or reward you, its equally amazing. Where this game shines is in its freedom and its spectacular first half which is immersive and challenging, using the aforementioned freedom to give players a seemingly endless array of solutions to these challenges that manage to be both frustrating and addictive (like the other souls games, and don't forget Sekiro and Bloodborne which in my opinion perfected this style of gaming). Players will struggle with the first story boss, but due to Elden Ring's huge and immersive world, players feel encourages to simply explore what it has to offer and then return to the fight when they're ready. You can find better gear, level stats, craft new items, which can be obtained from just riding around on your horse enjoying the beautiful scenery, and seeing some loot or enemies in the distant. The first 30 hours or so are everything I wanted from this game... and then there's the halfway point, where things go slightly downhill.

I may be sounding slightly dramatic, it isn't a nosedive in quality, but the difference is there. Personally, i wasn't as adventurous anymore from Mountaintop of the Giants to the end of the game. This is due to 2 things.

1. Overused enemies getting boring to fight against, most being mini bosses in the early game used way too many times. I was no longer excited to discover new challenges, because in the end i'd just find another Crucible Knight.

2. Extreme mount of damage, unfair even. Even miniature enemies took huge chunks off my HP every hit. I had over 50 vigor, but that wasn't enough for regular enemies to absolutely destroy me in a few hits whilst i'm trying to explore.

Bosses especially can reduce you down to a single AOE, with neverending combos that only allow you to get a single hit in or two. Some bosses feel designed for certain builds (*cough cough Maliketh cough cough*). That being said these aren't game ruining experiences, if you find it too hard you can summon spirits, people or just cheese the boss you're struggling on if you truly can't find another way. I felt like changing my build because it often felt like some form of OP bleed or sorcery build was required just to stand a chance. Don't let this put you off though, it's an excellent game with fantastic lore for you to follow and dark souls combat with more fluidity, and it does stick the landing at the end.

You do get through those seemingly impossible challenges, everyone does, but at times Elden Ring really tested how long you're willing to wait.

Chaos Walking (2021)
2/10
Give the actors and the audience a break.
4 March 2021
One of the messiest movies I've seen in a long time. I'm a fan of the books and if you are too then don't even bother watching this dumpster fire. I saw an early screener and I could barely take this movie seriously. The villains goals are devoid of all logic, the humour is awful and dry, none of the events are really tied together, it feels like a bunch of scene strung together in a hope to come up with an actual plot. Daisy Ridley is fine, Tom Holland is fine, Mads Mikkelson as always is flawless but it would be good if they actually made his character have logical motivations or if they fleshed him out. These actors don't deserve this, Daisy was screwed over big time with the sequel trilogy and now this, I hope this isn't the end of her career. As for Tom, he needs a better agent. Cherry was a self indulgent disappointment, but not as bad as this. Do not watch this movie, it'll be a waste of time and money (if you're gonna buy or rent it) ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of the books. This movie massacres the books story and characters. Obviously Tom Holland stans or tasteless moviegoers will spam 10/10s which is almost more of a shame than the fact that they butchered the script so much.

Not your average "horror", watch if you're a slowburn fan.
8 July 2020
I'm a huge slowburn fan, I watched Hereditary 3 times, Midsommar 2 times, and a bunch of others. I was very excited when I heard of his film, although i'll admit I hyped it up a but too much. I think the main reason this movie was hated was that it was mismarketed, meaning people went into the film expecting some epic and tense new horror, and got a slow, apocalyptic instead. But I feel like nobody is actually critiquing the film for what it is, they are only giving the film a bad review because of what it isn't is. what I mean by that is all of the one star reviews never bring up qualities of the film, like it's acting. The only real complaint about this film I have seen people write is that it wasn't what they wanted, and that it hadn't lived up to the hype. So i'll try my best not to write a review not complaining how it "wasn't as the trailer made it look" and actually list my negatives nd positives, let's begin. I thought the film was superbly acted, brilliant performances all around, mainly carrying the movie. It was a joy to watch the actors give it their all. I thought the film mainly succeeded in it's slowburn style and I was still failry gripped throughout, although some parts not so much as the film did decide to drag them on a fair bit. Some of my negatives may be it's ending, like I know, arthouse films are like that. But I feel like they could've made it a bit less ambiguous, without spoiling the story, but still making the viewer guess instead of them going "ugh that ending makes no sense", so quite a big negative there. But you get the idea so i'll write my verdict and grade Verdict: While it may be too slow at parts, It Comes At Night maintains suspense and has some powerhouse performances, worth watching for A24 fans. Grade: B

Riverdale (2017–2023)
How could something go so wrong?
7 July 2020
I was a fan of the first season, I thought it had great and thoughtful twists as well. Season 2 was a little above OK, in my opinion the black hood was interesting and saved the series, had a good twist as well. Season 3, oh boy here we go, was pretty bad I thought the plot was absolutely ridiculous, dialogue was very cringy and forced, the constant on and off relationships were weird, and fight club? I had a hard time finishing it. Oh and season 4, what a mess. I won't even start or my fingers are going to ache not even halfway through y rant, so i'll just tell you to not watch it, please. Season 1=8.5 Season 2=6.5 Season 3=5 Season 4=3 Total 5.75, mediocre. Shame on you Riverdale, shame on you.

Lester, is this what you want?
1 July 2020
What an amazing show. Each series is a different story and all fantastic in every way. Some superb and award winning acting, extremely witty writing, insane, wack plots, exceptional cinematography, dark humor that will leave you rolling on the floor, and tense and emotional scenes, gripping you, shocking you and you may find yourself shedding a tear or two. This is TV at it peak and does the movie good justice. Watch this now.

Neighbors (I) (2014)
4/10
Hit or Miss Comedy
1 July 2020
This comedy is 100% hit or miss. You'll either love it or hate it, some fans of this "ha ha f word= funny" or the "sex joke=comedy" will most likely enjoy themselves. I'm not a huge fan of this Judd Apatow/raunchy style, but some I do like, King Of Staten Island, Superbad or TED for examples. I feel like this film just really tries to be dirty and vulgar but it doesn't work. Positives I found with the film were the talented cast, who were good being as they had a pretty bad script. I still laughed a bit at times. The only reason it's 4 stars is because I laughed out loud a couple of times near the start, and I really thought the movie would keep this going, but it didn't. But oh well a laugh is a laugh so I have to give the credit. I'll have to admit when I went on the review page and saw all the one star reviews I was shocked. But it goes to show that Seth really needs to put that wit he used in Superbad again, not just throw in some random disgusting stuff and think people will always laugh their asses off at it. I won't criticize it's fairly simple plot, because comedies aren't known for complicated stories, it's more about their executions. And this executed quite poorly. I'll end my review here and put up my useless grading and dumb verdict. verdict: Lack of good laughs and a bombardment of dumb humor trying too hard. Bad Neighbors gets a bad grade. Grade: D

Black Mirror (2011– )
A unique and different tv experience, with an episode for everyone.
1 July 2020
Black Mirror is an anthology, meaning it is complied of different sci fi tales to make their seasons. This means the series doesn't really have any synopsis I can say, the only thing I can say is just watch the bloody show already. Every episode is different, some horror, some romance, some drama, and if you don't like the episode then just skip it, it's not like you'll miss anything as the next episode on your binge watch will be the complete opposite of what you just watched. As far as acting goes, it's top notch, stars like Jon Hamm, Daniel Kaluuya also appear on episodes bringing their amazing performances to the table. Every episode has their own cinematography, some bright and colorful, one episode will be black and white, really adding in on the unique feel of the whole thing. I would definitely call this show a masterpiece, but i almost gave it a 9 because of the 5th series. 2 episodes from the fifth series were pretty sh*te. Smithereens was great, so was Andrew Scott's performance. So yes, a masterpiece still, I won't let 2 bad episodes change that especially when compared to the works of art that the previous series had to offer. So ignore season 5 apart from Smithereens, Smithereens had a very important message and was a wonderfully shot and acted tale. Think of it as a mix of mini films. Now there may be some things that you may not find good, but there's always an episode for you. There 's twists, laughs, scares all in hour long episodes and tied up in a neat little bow just for you. And the Christmas Special was stunning, don't forget to watch that. But if that isn't enough, they have their own interactive film, Bandersnatch. An. Interactive. Film. You choose what the main character does, and it is awesome. So please, If you have the time, try watching this, you will not be disappointed. Verdict: With something new every episode, Black mirror really gets to you, and in all the right ways. A+

Get Out (I) (2017)
9/10
A film so good it can't "get out" of my head (bad pun,i know).
29 June 2020
This was the directorial debut of Jordan Peele, who then went on to create Us (2019) and co produce Hunters. The plot is a back man meeting his white girlfriend's parents to stay there for a while. This is the best example of slowburn done right, a lot of people hate slow films because usually it drags on without anything interesting happening. This does slightly drag on, but doing so manages to brilliantly add more tension each scene. From unsettling house keepers, a creepy brother, gatherings and strange talks with the parents. All of this resulting in a highly intelligent twist that will leave you scratching your head and also allows people to create their own theories on it. Several amazing details hidden in the scenes will have you coming back to watch again, eyeing the screen for clues. Daniel Kaluuya did a fantastic performance, along with the rest of the cast. Especially Caleb Landry Jones, playing a very off and strange character pretty much perfectly. The humor is just right in this film as well, some may say it's a horror comedy, I somewhat agree. But it adds enough laughs to keep it well above entertaining, but doesn't ruin the creepy vibe throughout the film either. I was shocked how this was the guy behind Key and Peele, making it a bigger achievement. Honestly everything about the film was great, but sorry this review was rather short. If you haven't watched this, please do. verdict: Humor, excellent foreshadowing and scares make this a horror film worth watching more than once. Get Out gets a big fat A

Hard to believe this is the same director of Nightcrawler, but decent movie.
26 June 2020
I think everyone who saw that Dan Gilroy would be directing Velvet Buzzsaw had very high hopes, especially those who saw the masterpiece known as Nightcrawler, and I know a lot of people were disappointed by this one, me included. But that definitely doesn't mean that this is a bad or a horrible movie. If i'm honest, it's actually pretty decent, but I think most would agree it leaves a bad taste in the viewer's mouth. The plot is fairly simple, spirit of a dead painter haunts and kills the rich snobs that have purchased his work, which I guess was slightly intriguing to me. Of course it's nowhere near quality story telling but it's the kind of plot that would entertain, yet the film only partly succeeded in that. The whole film just feels like a comedy or a drama, then suddenly switches to horror to pick off the characters one by one, and repeat. There was nothing interesting about any of the characters on the screen, they were just there for about 5 minutes, then appear later in the film to get killed. In a nutshell, what i'm trying to say is how half of the characters there, were only used to just be victims and get killed off. I have to give credit to some of the deaths, i'm not someone who enjoys all this blood and death on screen, but they were very clever and I liked how they used art to kill their own purchasers. That is one smart thing that I really enjoyed about the film, if only it would continue to be this smart. Jake Gyllehaal kills it, as always, and is an incredible actor that never gets enough love from the Academy. His unique, sometimes funny, and entertaining performance was the savior of this film. Rene Russo, Toni Collette, who I have been a big fan of since Hereditary, all were superb. Even Nancy Wheeler from Stranger Things was pretty good! All of the cast were fun to watch, even though they may have seemed flat at times, and i'm glad Jake and Rene got to work together again, because I love their chemistry. Sadly, this is a horror that relies on cheap jumpscares, a lot of the deaths were jumpscares, and predictable ones at that. If you've read my review of Slender Man, you'd know im not a fan of poorly done jumpscares. But some in the film landed, around 40% made me jump a bit, but not enough for me to give some praise. But one thing I loved from the deaths wasn't just their creativity, but the dark humor. I don't want to spoil any of darkly comedic scenes as this review is spoiler free, but I found myself laughing a lot. Another thing I wasn't too fond of was the ending, if you watch the film you will see what I mean, but it feels like something was missing, but I still liked the ambiguity, so I equally like and don't like the ending. Verdict: Generic plot, some useless characters and some clichés will probably disappoint, but excellent performances from some of the cast, creative deaths, and some laugh out loud dark comedy, still make for a decent fun ride. Worth watching, don't expect something Nighcrawler. My grade is around a C+.

Slender Man (I) (2018)
What a huge waste of potential
25 June 2020
I'd heard about the awful reviews before watching the film. Knowing that the film was supposedly terrible, I prepared myself for 1hour and 33m of awfulness and desperately trying not to fall asleep, and man was it a good thing I prepared myself. I would start with some aspects of the film I liked and as you would've guessed... there are none. My god was the acting awful, a well earned razzie nomination for [actress's name I forgot], congrats! But honestly the actors deserved a lot better, really isn't their fault they just had to run, get predictably jumpscared (I'll get to THAT later) and scream at some atrocious CGI for most of the film. Oh, if only there was a zero rating I could put. But its not just the poor cast, Slenderman doesn't deserve this either. one of the most famous horror tales and one that creeped out many during its popularity, especially me, being transformed into completely the opposite of what it was, and made into something so laughable it looks like it would be one of the parodies in Scary Movie. Poor old Slendy is barely in the film either, less than 5 minutes screentime in total and the occasional jumpscare appearance. Speaking of jumpscares, the ones in this film are some of the most cliché and hilarious attempts of surprising/shocking the audience I have ever witnessed. The sheer amount of predictability in them is unbelievably stupid. The simple pan to one side, nothing there, Oh no! Then pan to the other, and there's nothing there either! Big surprise right? And then just when the character thinks they're safe and there is nothing there after all, they turn around and BOO! These are done so lazily, and it pains me to see that Blumhouse still uses them in their films, Invisible Man being an exception. Now I love Psychological horrors, Midsommar, Hereditary you name it. But that doesn't mean that I still don't like jumpscares. They can be used really well, in stuff like the original Insidious, or in IT. But this film misses every shot. I don't see the need to make the film a Pg-13, since when was Slenderman for people at that age? And I know, I know, pg-13 doesn't always ruin films. But with films like this and Venom, it does feel off. I'm going on and on so i'll finish my review here. Verdict: Lazy writing, bad acting and hilariously bad scenes drag this film down deep into 1 star territory and up to the point where it may even offend Slender fans. I give slender man a 1 star. My first on the website, and hopefully my last.
