Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2022)
Loved the movie like I loved th ebook
I was so happy to see that this was being made in to a movie. I don't go to theaters, so have to wait for any movies I want to see to stream. It saw A&D on Hoopla this morning, and pretty much dropped everything to watch. I read the book about a year ago, but as soon as I started watching, it all came back to me. The movie was true to the book, and the acting was superb. Like the book, I can relate to the movie, as, although I was in my 20s in the 1980s, it was the same struggle for me then - shame, fear, acceptance. Brought all the emotions back.
Hoping to see the sequel, "A&D Dive into the Waters of the World"......that too was a wonderful read, and could be as good as or better than this movie.
Highly recommended!
The Year of the Dog (2022)
A great little film!
I saw this title on my Hoopla feed yesterday, and immediately decided I needed to watch. I am a recovering alcoholic - I've been sober for a long time, but ask any recovering alcoholic if they remember the first 30 days (the white chip), and they most likely will. I sure do. When I read the film's synopsis, I knew I needed tot watch.
Really glad I did! The acting, the screen writing, the movie's setting and cinematography - all very well done. I tend to gravitate to indie films - some are hits, so are dreadful misses, but this film was a hit with me. I would say the only drawback for some viewers would be - much like a Hallmark movie (and I love those) - the ending is fairly predictable, but that does not take away from the pure joy of watching this.
Sacrifice (2018)
Oh my gosh!
I just came across this wonderful film today in a short film collection I had purchased a couple of years ago. Absolutely stunning, moving, and beautifully acted. I did not know anything about this film before I watched it, but generally I am a big fan of Australian movies. This one did not disappoint. I am usually not one to cry during, or even be especially moved by, most films, but this was really an exception for me. Fortunately I have this on my hard drive, and definitely plan to watch it again.
Not sure what more I can say about this film - just watch it if you get the chance. You will not be disappointed! If I could give it more than 10 stars I would!
Sundae (2022)
Nice little film!
I am a big fan of the short film genre, and there are a ton out there. I came across this on You Tube, and thought I would give it a look. I am glad that I did. Many short films on You Tube leave me thinking "what the heck did I just watch?", but not this one.
This was a nice short film - well done with an undertone of sadness. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out the relationship between the lead characters, but after some dialog it's clear they are best friends, and one of them is most likely dying. The other tries his best to hold his composure, but you can tell he is quite upset at the situation.
The young actors did a really good job! I would like to see more from them.
Looking for Alaska (2019)
Better Than I Expected!
This was amazing. I had read John Green's book a few years back. You know how you read a book and, in your mind, you already know how things will look, and how characters will act and appear? Then most of the time when you see a screen adaptation, it's not what you expected, and you are let down. But this........so much better than what I had in my mind. I think the young actors were amazing. I had seen Charlie Plummer in other films, so was excited to see him again. But the others - Kristine Froseth, Denny Love, and Jay Lee - really, really good. And the supporting actors, from Dr. Hyde, to The Eagle, to all the other students, really added to the series. And yeah, this 59-year old guy cried a couple of times.
I highly recommend this!
