Taking Lives (2004)
Boring
The first 5 minutes were interesting. Then it became so BORING, that I dont't know how it ended. I could not watch the last 45 minutes. I even did not see a sex scene that everybody finds the best part of the movie.
Angelina is beautiful, but is very annoying in this role, because a) her character is not a professional FBI agent. FBI agent does not tell anyone about her childhood issues, especially to the suspect b) she does not realize that he is a suspect, she thinks that he is an eyewitness, c) she mixes up professional and personal relashionship, d) she has very strange taste by choosing weak complainer (Ethan) vs. Sexy police officer that hangs around. E) she did not study anything at FBI because she does not know that psychopath can pretend having human emotions and reactions like the one that Ethan showed when he saw the rope. She immediately says: he is not a psychopath for sure because he experienced fear and disgust. Hey, he didn't, he only showed, he acted, that's it. F) she likes to lie in graves and old beds, g) she cannot take a bath or have a dinner without watching pictures from crime scene.
Screamers (1995)
Depressing
Boring.
Extremely bad special effects.
Everyone dies.
Artificial intelligence is self-replicating and gives no chance for humans.
Robots look like people and this is always disgusting.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Forever great and my version of what happened
This movie is great. It was great in 2001 and in 2021.
It has great visuals, music, acting, idea and of course, what people see in it.
In 2001 I thought that Donnie travelled in time is past and changed the future.
But in 2021 I realized that what we are told in this movie is not actually what happened.
We see everything from Donnie's eyes, but who is Donnie? He is a person with schizophrenia. He cannot understand where the reality is and in what order events happened (just like in Lynch's Lost Highway).
That said, everything in that movie (both lines of events) is a fantasy in his mind.
Even the engine did not hit him, because there was no engine at all. Did he die? I don't think so.
Why we see people at the end 'recalling' the events like Frank touching his eye? Because Donnie sees that in his mind and on screen we see his hallucinations. Frank was not shoot at all.
There were no parallel universes. Even some people could not be a real characters, but Donnie created them in his mind.
No one in this movie is dead, no one travelled in time.
Alien (1979)
Too funny to be serious
In 2021 this movie looks too naive and too funny in places when it was supposed to be smart or scaring. And even in 90s it looked the same.
And when I saw the Alien in his full height with TAIL, I laughed so hard. We were told that he is a humanoid, right? Alright, he's standing on 2 legs like human, but tail makes him look like a giant lizard.
The lifecycle of aliens is very strange: they start like insects or something, but grow into a humanoid. What? I cannot imagine that on any planet.
Also there are many plot holes like why did Ripley took cat with herself in capsule knowing that every living creature can be infected by another alien that could possibly exist? And so on.
Sci-fi before 80s is usually not good and this movie just proves that rule.
Aliens (1986)
Festival of boredom
When I was a kid I found this movie interesting and even frightening. However as an adult I laughed at its stupidity and boredom. I could only watch the first hour by when most of the squad was killed because they did not study the subject before going to the zone. I don't know why Ripley did not train them.
The battle was so boring that I felt asleep in the middle. Aliens were not scaring at all.
I'm giving it 4 for childhood memories.
Moon (2009)
Emotional and scaring
This is very emotional, sad movie with great acting. It is scaring. It is much more scaring than sci-fi horror movies, because you don't know how the story will turn the next moment.
But from the second watch I noticed some gaps/weirdness in story. To distinguish heroes I will call them Dying Sam (Bad-looking Sam, Tired Sam, Sam with blood) and Polished Sam (Good-looking, healthy and arrogant).
1) Why did Gerty the robot helped them? This is not common in sci-fi stories.
2) Why Polished Sam was not surprised when he saw Dying Sam for the first time? First of all he saw another person and he saw someone looking like himself.
3) Why Polished Sam immediately said that Dying Sam is a clone? Did he know about that part of program? He obviously thought that Dying Sam is HIS clone. He did not know that himself is a clone, too.
4) Is it correct that Dying Sam was already dying before the crash (because of what?) When he had long hair he said that they are falling. Also, the recording showed that he got into capsule thinking that he is going home, but instead he was killed by gas in capsule?
Was it the other clone before Dying Sam?
The Dying Sam got huge dose of radiation when he was unconscious after the crash - I guess that's why he started to die. But at that moment he already had short hair.
5) Will it really help that Polished Sam established live connection between Moon and Earth? The evacuation group was still there and they easily could fix it i.e. block it again. So I don't see any point in that.
6) Why the station even had way out for people? It was not for clones for sure. Was it intended for evacuation group that arrived? How many people could get in there? I think 3 people could not use one ship to get back. Were there many ships?
7) Why Polished Sam was not kind to Dying Sam and did not understand that he was dying, he was only asking all the way: are you ok, what's wrong with you? The Dying Sam did not sacrifice himself, he just did not have force to go back and the Polished Sam said I'm ok with that scenario. He did not tried hard to get him back. Yes, he could die and he would be probably dead by the end of the flight, but the Polished Sam did not even try to save him.
Sully (2016)
There are better documentaries than this movie
That was a remarkable event with happy ending thankfully to professionalism of captain Sullenberger. It was a joy for the whole world, no doubt. He is a true hero.
But the movie was too concentrated on investigation of this incident and it was a bit boring.
In fact, there was no need in this movie because you can easily find great documentaries on youtube about this event and they are made as interesting dramatization with interviews of all participants (the crew, the passengers and their families waiting for them on ground). Or how the captain and some passengers later met at museum near the aircraft when it was repaired and put on excibition.
However, this movie gave a good visualization from cockpit's view how they flew over the bridge and how dangerous it was. Also, for those who are interested in investigation it can give some interesting details i.e. why Captain's decision was right, but again - you can find another documentary or read about this elsewhere. Because this movie is a mix of documentary-like and drama-like style and I think it should be made in drama style only.
Lost Highway (1997)
Disgusting
This is the most disgusting and depressing movie I have ever seen. And the worst movie out of Lynch's works (the best is by the way 'Mulholland Dr.').
'Lost Highway' screams out: 'look, how meaningless life is! You can only use your sexual instincts and be only in bad relationship with a bad person who lies to you. You can only be in dependent relationship with no bond, you can only run for the person but not be a partner. And you even cannot break the relationship because you are weak and super silly. You don't have any personality, that's why you cannot live alone or find another person.'
Plot: movie about stupidity, mental disease and a user.
Actors: all good except for the main actress. When she plays girl from the past (when the guy was young), she looks like 40-year old fat woman with bad-looking blonde hair. Why she doesn't not look like a young girl?
When she plays a wife (with dark hair) she is not that fat.
Also, it's not possible to not compare actress (Patricia) with her sister Rosanna Arquette (Le Grand Blue, The Pulp Fiction) who is more talented and good looking.
Photography: 1) interesting effects when something is enlightened or put in darkness. 2) Horrible effects when light is blinking - it's not possible to watch even for people without epilepsie. By the way, I did not see any warning about this in the beginning of movie. 3) Disgusting killings. Brains all over the place, dark blood pouring from heads, cut leg, etc. There is always a way in cinematography to show violence without obvious things like to say about it and not show it.
Music: very good.
Wild at Heart (1990)
Does not stand out, easily forgettable
The movie was boring especially sex scenes and the only funny part was when Lula was listening to the radio on the way to Texas.
All characters are blank, I saw something like that in hundreds of other movies before and the movie itself is very average and not memorable, but takes 2 hours of your time.
Another Lynch's work 'Blue Velvet' is not an easy-to-watch movie and even disgusting, but at least it has personality. But here there is no.
Breaking Bad (2008)
As ugly as Walt's underwear
This was boring show, with lots of murders of good characters. I did not find any acting or emotions or music or visual part i.e. there were nothing entertaining or touching.
I kept watching only because of two characters but when they got killed I realized that the show became empty.
My favorite episode is the last one when this is all ended in proper way.
Also, what is the lesson learned from this? If you have a crisis of middle age, you need to become a criminal instead of trying to find support in your family and make some efforts to improve your life?
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Find a friend that got the plot
For me this was interesting and breathtaking movie with disappointing ending.
When I saw it first time all I could say is that I didn't understand a thing. To understand it you need to have a special kind of thinking - it's not that you are stupid/smart, but it's like ability to solve Rubik's Cube.
So I just asked my friend to explain me the plot and when he did it was such a relief for me (and disappointment because I actually liked the plot that was on the surface and did not like the real plot). The story is actually very sad.
In the beginning there are some hilarious moments (1. director, 2. cowboy, 3. hitman), but then the movie gets darker and darker. All actors are very good, and the music is great.
I was confused by Naomi's appearance - if that was she all the time (Betty/Diane) then she's a good actress because that was absolutely different behavior and face expression. I'm still in doubt. Amazing.
Blue Velvet (1986)
It's a criminal farce
First of all - I do not recommend it, because it's sick.
Most of the people did not get the genre of this movie and took it too seriously. In fact the genre is farce which means that it looks like there is no sense or logic in action.
Blue Velvet is hard to watch because it's disgusting, I pushed myself to continue watching, but it's also very funny and well done.
What I did not like is Dorothy's body. If woman's body is shown in movie, it must be perfect - that's my opinion. For me her front look is not as bad as her look from the back. I want to unwatch it.
Interstellar (2014)
It was interesting
I recommend it if you like sci-fi.
It was interesting because I could not predict the next line in the plot.
It has really good music and poetry.
It has great photography, especially the giant wave scene or Matt's docking.
What I did not like is the cast.
Jessica Chastain is not pleasant, Anne Hataway is not for sci-fi (she is good is comedies). But Matthew was good in this role and he saved the movie.
Bring It On (2000)
The best teen movie with lots of energy
I was sad one night and noticed that this movie was on TV. It made me happy and gave really good mood.
It has a lot of energy, it has fun jokes and attractive cast. I like Kirsten very much because of her positive mood and smile.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Good try, but a huge miscast
I love Queen, and this movie is very good in copying the 20-min performance at Wembley, but I must admit that Rami Malek is a huge miscast.
Other actors did a great job and looked just like on photographs and music videos of Queen.
Now what's not right with Malek - 1) he does not look like Freddy, 2) his body type is the same across the movie, but real Freddy was thin in the beginning and by Wembley he got some muscles and started looking more massive, 3) Malek could not move and dance as natural as Freddy, 4) he has false chew that made his mouth look much bigger than Freddy's, 5) he is not as self-confident as Freddy was on stage, 6) there is no energy or sexuality in his performance.
Like Crazy (2011)
Dumb, dumber and even more dumber
This movie is really bad because of 1) illogical plot and decisions without any reasons behind them, 2) bad acting, 3) camera shakes and cuts, 4) absolute useless of their reunion at the end of movie.
So, the plot is the girl is obsessed with a guy.
When he realizes that he does not love her anymore (he did not even try to visit her country explaining that he cannot leave his business and she ate that), he starts a new relationship with stupid girl (even more stupid than the first one) who lives with him even when she sees that he does not love her.
Then he dumps the second girl to reunion with the first one because she pressed him to marry her. Then they break again and he calls the second girl to live together again because he want his jeans to be ironed again.
And she goes! Again!
Then the first one pushes him to live together again and he says to the second one to leave his house (again).
If you want to see a drama about painful relationships, watch "500 days of Summer" instead.
A Walk to Remember (2002)
Very good
This movie is heartwarming. Is shows the importance of inner world of every person.
Acting is very good and Mandy Moore is a good singer with lovely voice.
However, I found her character unusual for a priest's daughter: she is daring with her offenders (not humble), she is prideful and she shows her sexuality.
Save the Last Dance (2001)
Some good actress could do it better
If I cannot dance or act, it'ok - I don't call myself actress and I was not hired to dance in movie about dance.
There are actors that cannot dance, it's ok - they just don't take roles in which they need to dance.
But Julia Stiles is an actress, it's her occupation, AND she got role of a dancer. And when she cannot act and dance - what else can I say?..
Abilene (1999)
For those who in love with Texas
"Shadows of the Past", or another name of this movie is "Abilene".
Movie about life, about people and Texas.
I highly recommend it - it has excellent script, acting, music and amazing Texas landscapes.
In the ending credits it is noted that sponsor is Shiner beer.
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
I love Ewoks
I love Ewoks, they are cute and funny and they helped our beloved characters and died for them.
Overall, this part is a little bit boring, but there are nice moments related to family relationships.
And also this is the first time when you'll feel sorry for Darth Vader.
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Very important in trilogy and well-done
I love this part very much because of the Lando and a twist in Solo's destiny.
And there is Yoda here!
And I love the last minute of screenplay when they are standing and watching out of the window. This is the shot that I always remember when I think of them.
The actors and the movie crew must be proud of effect they put on kids (and adults) of 70-90s. I had unique childhood, the best - thanks to Star Wars!
17 Again (2009)
Copy
What saved this movie for me is a love line between his "father" and his principal based on common interest in Lord of the Rings.
Without that, the movie itself is weak. Especially the fact that it completely copies scene from Back to the Future with the exception that here he awakens in the daughter's room.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Follows the style of Episodes 4,5,6
After Episodes 1,2,3 from one side (somewhat ok, but boring) and Episodes 7,8,9 (stupid, magical) I had a nerve shakes before going to cinema to watch Solo.
But it is not bad. It has fun jokes in style of old trilogy and it tells the story of how Solo met Chewbacca, Lando and how he got the Millennium Falcon ship.
However, I cannot remember anything special and I will not watch it again.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
No words
I knew I should not watch this. After I disliked Episodes 1,2,3 I was still hoping that maybe only Episodes about times before Luke's adventures are bad? But episodes after Luke's adventures are much, much worse...
That Kylo Ren is not Darth Vader, and the characters put significant efforts to show that they are frightened by him. That efforts are written on their faces like they are doing powerlifting.
I liked Rey though, just because she has perfect face and it's a pleasure to see her.
Apart from that, there is no real plot and no friends and no love, and I even cannot remember what it was about...
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Hilarious and visually great
The jokes are hilarious, the acting is very good and there are many interesting twists and action.
A joke about Multi Pass is now the favorite in my family.
And also the costumes - you will not see anything like that anywhere! They were made by designer Jean Paul Gaultier. It's a piece of art! Just look at those fabrics, colours and style!
It looks like it was a lot of fun filming this movie!
