Infinity (1996)
Good directorial effort
Matthew Broderick ('Ferris Bueller's Day Off' etc) stars and directed this one, based on a screenplay by his own dear mother, which was in turn based on the memoir by the man himself, Richard Feynman. The acting and directing are good in this story about love, loss, and science. It's a touching story, but not overly so. That adds to the appeal for me.
Frownland (2007)
Strong storyteller on the rise
Ronald Bronstein wrote and directed this movie. He is one of my favorite screenwriters, best known for his collaborations with the Safdie brothers. Here he tries his hand at directing as well, and while he's not in his finest form, that's okay. You can see the mark of a strong storyteller here, and his work since this one has proved that he learned from this one and just kept getting better.
Reflections of Evil (2002)
A masterpiece
For the sake of objectivity I will state upfront that this movie is one that a viewer will either love or hate, to be sure. What is it about? That is nearly impossible to explain, and the thousand words permitted here would not be nearly adequate for summation, so I won't even bother trying. If you're curious enough you'll just have to watch it yourself to find out, if you dare. It's a challenging film for many reasons, but it's worth it.
Spotlight Scandals (1943)
Fun little film
I love these quickly-made, short little features from the 1940's and 1950's. They all have a certain feel to them, and it's a good feeling. It's perfect for late nights when you're having trouble sleeping or just don't want to go to bed yet!
Follow the Leader (1944)
Classic midnight fun
There's a good bit of fun to be had in this one. It's the sort of thing you can just put on in the background and don't have to pay too much attention to. There are some good (unintentional) laughs in this quickly-made film. It's got a certain charm to it.
Duke of the Navy (1942)
Another fun one
I love these kinds of films. They're quickly-made and they know exactly what they are. They're the perfect kind of film for certain occasions, and as they years pass they only become more appealing as true 'classics' of the genre. It's just an hour-long and the perfect sort of thing to turn on in the background at a party or enjoy with friends.
The Ape Man (1943)
It's fun
Don't take this one too seriously and you won't be disappointed. It's great fun for a midnight movie. It's truly funny when it's not meant to be, but that is a big part of what makes these kinds of films so charming.
Uncut Gems (2019)
A true gem
I've been watching the Safdie Brothers since before they were famous. They were good directors then, and they're good now. Something I've come to realize over the years with each additional film is the importance of their long-time collaborator Ronald Bronstein, who has co-written their two most recent screenplays, including the one for this film. As he is the first credited writer on both, I can only assume that he was the head writer. As such I would consider him the true hero of this film. Sandler and the other actors were great of course, and the directing and editing were all good, but Mr. Bronstein seems to be content unseen and under-celebrated, cranking out wonderful scripts that become wonderful films.
Good Time (2017)
Almost perfect
Whatever you think you're getting yourself into with this one, it is not what you are expecting. This is such a great film and this is how movies should be made. It's a wild ride from start to finish. Great performances and some truly great writing here.
Go Get Some Rosemary (2009)
Great movie
Go Get Some Rosemary (also titled as 'Daddy Longlegs') is a truly great film. It pulls no punches and shows the mark of some truly great up and coming filmmakers in their earlier days. It also features a wonderful and memorable performance from Ronald Bronstein, who also co-wrote the film.
