Emma. (2020)
Stream It
Excessively lengthy at over two hours, Emma can drag (particularly in the first act), but strong characters manage to find their footing as the story progresses. The inconsistent pacing can be felt throughout, but fantastic sets and costume design along with cleverly written dialogue will prove a rewarding watch.
Bloodshot (2020)
Stream It
If nothing else, Bloodshot is DEFINITELY a Vin Diesel movie. The premise is intriguing, but the plot ultimately falls into a run-of-the-mill action flick cliche. Nothing here is new, but satisfying fight sequences and classic Diesel ass-kicking will do enough to satisfy fans of the genre.
The Hunt (2020)
Stream It
While trying to convey a political message, the film manages to merely piece together random buzz words from far-leaning caricatures of actual people. That being said, the original concept and fun, over-the-top violence do more than enough to garner a viewing.
Onward (2020)
Stream It
Onward lacks the charm and originality of Pixar's more beloved properties, but its heartfelt third act makes for an ultimately rewarding viewing. The fantasy elements do little to elevate the story, but the film succeeds as a fun family adventure with a strong message.
The Way Back (2020)
Stream It
The Way Back may be the most predictable and formulaic sports movie in the history of sports movies, but strong characters and a powerhouse performance from Ben Affleck manage to mostly hide its faults. For fans of the actor and the genre, this film should hit all the right notes.
Impractical Jokers: The Movie (2020)
Stream It
Impractical Jokers: The Movie features a handful of hilarious bits, but the film's plot line falls far short of garnering its feature status. Fans of the show will find the scripted scenes worth sitting through, but new viewers should gravitate towards the superior show instead.
Boku no hîrô akademia THE MOVIE - Hîrôzu: Raijingu (2019)
Stream It
My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising overcomes its simple plot by making full use of its runtime. The newly introduced villains can feel a little thin, but constant, gripping action allows previously underutilized secondary characters to shine. Fans of the anime with find the film a worthy installment.
Brahms: The Boy II (2020)
Skip It
The sequel we've all been waiting for, "Brahms: The Boy II" manages to rival The Turning as the most offensively pointless horror movie of the year. Brahms may be one bad boy indeed, but his company would be preferable to another viewing of this sad cliche of a film.
The Invisible Man (2020)
See It
The Invisible Man requires more than the occasional suspension of disbelief, but an original story with legitimately tense moments elevate it to the top of its genre. The characters often fall into classically poor horror movie decision-making, but it's not enough to take away from the overall impact of the film.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
Stream It
Thinly written characters and an overabundance of CGI can be off-putting, but The Call of the Wild finds success as an enjoyable if predictable crowd-pleaser. Be prepared for a generic plot but ultimately rewarding adventure.
The Lodge (2019)
Stream It
The plot twists don't always work, but an impressively dark atmosphere and standout performance from Riley Keough will keep you on the edge of the seat through the film's entire runtime. The slow-burn buildup isn't for everyone, but fans of the genre will find The Lodge a satisfying entry.
Ordinary Love (2019)
Stream It
A difficult but impactful watch, Ordinary Love successfully portrays love and loss in a way that feels entirely human. Even at just 90 minutes, the film can feel surprisingly lengthy, but a tour de force performance from Lesley Manville always manages to pull you back in.
Fantasy Island (2020)
Skip It
There's nothing wrong with turning your brain off and enjoying a dumb movie, but to get any enjoyment out of Fantasy Island, you'd have to remove your brain completely. Until the technology exists, don't waste your time on this hot mess.
Downhill (2020)
Skip It
The film starts off strong and has its moments throughout, but too often boils down to a series of uncomfortable scenes with unlikable characters. Not quite funny enough to succeed as a comedy, but lacking dramatic substance, Downhill ultimately fails to find its footing.
The Photograph (2020)
Stream It
The Photograph is unable to avoid falling into some classic genre cliches, but strong chemistry from Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield make for an above average romance flick. The pacing can be inconsistent, but not enough to take away from the film's overall impact.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Stream It
Sonic doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but likable characters and surprisingly clever writing result in a rare video game adaptation that doesn't disappoint. For a property that frankly had no business being made into a movie, the result could have been much worse.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
See It
Beautifully acted and technically sharp, Portrait of a Lady on Fire presents a tragic love story that feels familiar yet wholly original. The length can feel excessive, but by the time the credits roll you will be hard-pressed to find a single moment that felt wasted.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
See It
Led by an enthusiastic performance we've come to expect from Margot Robbie, Birds of Prey manages to elevate its generic plot with well-choreographed action and entertaining characters who prove to be a welcome addition to the DC Universe.
The Rhythm Section (2020)
Verdict: Skip It
The writing is lazy - major plot points are reached without any real buildup and stiff characters are difficult to root for. Save for a few stylish action sequences, there is very little here to garner a viewing.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Skip It
Gretel and Hansel attempts to elevate the classic fairy tale but ends up suffering from a narrative that is more convoluted than compelling. The visuals and cinematography are impressive, but the non-technical aspects of the film come up short.
Les misérables (2019)
Stream It
Slow moving but engaging, Les Misérables is a well-crafted modern take on Victor Hugo's classic novel. Ultimately a police procedural, the story often feels familiar, but strong performances from complex characters will hold your attention through the film's intense final act.
Three Christs (2017)
Skip It
The actors certainly give it their best, but the strong performances are not enough to make up for an unremarkable script. It has its moments, but at just under two hours, the film drags. Three Christs has an interesting premise, but unfortunately, the execution is a failure.
Bâsudê wandârando (2019)
Stream It
A perfectly adequate adventure story, The Wonderland is enjoyable if not substantial. The film suffers from a generic plot and excessive length, but the animation is impressive and well stylized. If looking for an entertaining family friendly viewing, you could certainly do worse.
The Gentlemen (2019)
See It
The plot often comes off as thinking its more clever than it actually is, but the fantastic characters and consistent laughs do more than enough to make up for it. Perfectly cast and well directed, the Gentlemen is an entertaining return to form for Guy Ritchie.
The Turning (2020)
Skip It
About as generic as a horror film can get, The Turning fails at nearly every aspect its predecessors got right. The characters are maddening, the attempted scares fall flat, and the nonexistent plot provides one of the least satisfying endings in movie history. Don't waste your time.
