Cheyenne (1955)
Great story lines
I always thought this very first one hour western on TV was just great. The story lines alone were innovative and interesting. I truly believe the writers put a lot of effort in making this an intriguing western. Of course, I was always a fan of Clint Walker and enjoyed seeing him in all roles he played. His quiet powerful presence is hard not to like. This show started the TV westerns of the 50's and it didn't disappoint. My father and I would make a point of catching this show on our small black and white TV when I was a kid. Even the special effects back then were pretty good for that period.
This 1950's western is still shown on some channels and it is worth a look for anyone who is not familiar with this series.
The Andy Griffith Show (1960)
Never really saw the great appeal . . .
Yes, there were several episodes that were funny and generally centered on the mis-steps of Barney, but the main characters were strange and largely hypocritical. Andy always backed up Barney when Barney would continuously screw up, even after getting direct orders from Andy to not do something. Then at other times, Andy would be visibly angry and hostile toward, Opie, his own son and only when Andy suspected Opie of doing something wrong. That turn about in behavior seems completely backwards and hypocritical. The writers should have seen that glaring hypocrisy and do a better job of not having the characters behave that way.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2003)
Way Over Rated
Jimmy Kimmel, sounds like a dog food and this guy is not funny. I don't think any thing he says is not written for him, that's why he stumbles so often during interviews. He seems unread and ill informed or just stupid. I think he hit is peak on the, Man Show and even that was pretty brainless. I also feel there are too many so called, "talk shows" on television where the whole premise is to get as many commercials in as possible in 40 minutes, but it seems like 90 minutes
The other talk show hosts are not much better. Jimmy Fallon is a skit performer, best left to SNL and not cut out for a talk show.
Please come back Conan !!
M*A*S*H (1972)
Occasionally funny
There were many moments in the early years where the writing brought some very funny lines, but beyond that that the show was just too setup and phony. Hawkeye's constant one liners is ridiculous for anyone to believe he actually communicated that way. As someone sho served in combat you develop a de-sensitivity to war around you, but these characters always stayed holier than tho. Trapper and Col. Blake were very funny and interesting. BJ and Winchester should have walked into the mine field. The original movie was well done with many dramatic moments, the show should not have lasted more than 5 years.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Too Hollywood
I do think that Tom Cruise is doing a better job of acting over all, BUT, this entire movie is nothing but clichés. The dialog is more like an SNL skit. The first mach 10.3 flight and the plane disintegrates and somehowTom just walks into a cafe', really ? Aren't his rescue crews looking for him, is it smart to just walk off from a crash landing ?? The flying sequences were very good indeed, but flying loosey goosey is very unmilitary. Many flying stunts were way too close for any training scenarios. These Tom Cruise movies seem more like a vehicle for his showing his dare devil exploits, then a serious drama about pilots and their usually unknown adventures, both success and failures.
Adventures of Superman: The Perils of Superman (1958)
Bad story and just a silly episode
The obvious flaws and terrible story line make this episode hard to take. The writers just seem to lose interest in these later color versions.
How did Clark leave Perry White's office with nobody seeing or asking why?
Why do the criminals always tell people exactly what their plans are before they commit the crime ?
Clark is not hanging and merely standing on something, since his arms do not seemed stretched.
Perry White on the buzz saw was never in danger or even work as the log would hit the saw motor before cutting him.
Jimmy Olson has his steering wheel come off before his accident so he can't steer,
really ??
Adventures of Superman (1952)
So phony and yet entertaining
As a kid watching this show back in the fifties, I would bug my dad so many times when things made no sense at all. It must have drove him nuts to hear me complain every so often. I did like the show and watched it every time I could and there wasn't much on TV back in the fifties.
Today, I still laugh when Clark Kent always says, "Now wait just a minute" Do the writers always have to make him say that silly line in almost every episode ?
The special effects were terrible even back in those days and if a kid could spot them it must have been really obvious.
Adventures of Superman, had been like a drug for me. I couldn't stop watching and I knew they are corny shows. I did like Phyllis Coates better than Noel Neill and she was just hotter and a better, believable reporter.
The early, first black and white episodes were the best by far. You can see more effort was put into writing and acting and story lines. When they switched over to color things started to change and the whole program became a farce.
