Kottayam (2020)
Taut thriller and arresting visuals
If you're a sucker for thrillers and good cinematography this is the movie for you. From the very first frame of the blue night sky and the hills Binu Bhaskar establishes himself as a fantastic cinematographer, however in no time you'll realise how good a director he is as well.
Though it starts off as a murder mystery it goes much deeper and covers a gamut of topics including exploitation of mother earth (symbolically also shown thru the exploitation of a woman), displacement of natives from their own land, arrival of outsiders to Kerala, acculturation etc... Anything more about the plot would be a spoiler.
Special mention to the screen writer for the non-linear narrative which is a bit confusing at the beginning but by the second act everything falls in place. The movie also leaves a lot to the interpretation of the audience and may result in several discussions once they leave the cinema hall, which in itself is an achievement by the writers.
Special mention to the fantastic cast, the background music and editing.
Watch it and you won't be disappointed
