The Persian Version (2023)
Female Centric Dramedy
I wasn't sure starting this if I'd make it all the way through cause of the seemingly forthcoming extra cheesieness.
However, I found the main character and style the movie was made interesting enough to continue pushing on without needing to think about it (i.e., I liked watching it).
The women are the focus of this film and the baggage that comes with being born female. Wasn't sure if mom was a narcissist or what was going to happen, but the story fulfills so just watch.
I enjoyed seeing the bending of both genders in more than one portrayed way in this film, which gets you thinking (even if subconsciously) them wheels are turning!
It's not drawn out - it just tells the story of being pulled into different directions on who we are, without over telling or over scripting. Yet it remains humorous.
To me this film is truly innovative and to see the current 6 star rating makes me think I need to go on the higher end of my scale as I gauge internally what challenges a film like this might have had in getting made!
Oh there's also some Bollywood vibes during the dance scenes.
Oh and I might've gotten water in my eyes a time or two. But again, the comedic theme remained.
I have never seen a culturally torn Persian female centric sad happy dramedy with a splash of drag and gender nonconformity before.
Have you?
It's pretty great. I was so pleasantly surprised!
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Terrible Despite the Quality Cast
The stupid music was SO annoying. And it is an overused music in many horror films that sounds like slimy dread which doesn't fit how bubblegum this end of world movie is with these bougie people in their fancy neighborhood.
They even play the music for the deer in the woods. Are they really sipped to be scary with their sweet little deer faces? Not even bears or wolves - deer. Cue the horror slime dread music, so stupid.
Nothing's really explained in terms of an actual
Conclusion and there's no need to make this movie as long as it was. It drags on saying nothing.
What a horrible flick. So unsatisfying.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Toooo Loooooong
I'm sorry this movie was tarnished by the excessive repetition and long pauses. This is an important story that needed to be told. The excessive unnecessary length & redundancy takes away from the message as it makes for a painfully long movie. You get what's happening within the first hour so there's an extra hour (at least) of eye-rolling filler that could be been cut.
Movie makers need to understand the pain points of the viewers, those exact people they're trying to reach. We get what's happening from the start. It's obvious. We don't need it to be repeated and repeated and repeated what's going on. Even the dumbest person would comprehend it. And to watch this in the theater, bladders everywhere are suffering. There's no need for a 2-hour movie to be dragged out to 3.5 excruciating hours.
Editing is an ignored skill here.
I'm so sad this is based in a true story. Humanity can be so horrible.
The Mother (2023)
Predictable Story So It's Boring
One of the most predictable movies you could see. Unexciting. Stupid, common, not believable stunts. This story didn't need nearly 2 hours to be told. 1 hr 20 mins would've been more than enough.
Glad to see JLo still doing her thing and hope she continues but really wish she'd choose good movies.
Why is the character count 600? I'm done taking about this movie.
Her male costar is a total throwaway poor guy was nothing but someone to take the beatings. At least they didn't throw in a lameass love scene, glad for that. That's not a spoiler, I hope... 50 characters to go. Jennifer Lopez, choose higher quality movies!
Nattrikken (2020)
One of the Best Shorts I've Seen!
This story is absolutely great! So many different emotions and topics are covered in this lovely little short film. I can't even believe since seeing it that it was a mere 15 minutes because of how much was packed in this wondrous creation.
Suspense, drama, comedy all of it is covered.
Please check it out! And enjoy!!!
I watched this as part of an overall show featuring Oscar nominated shorts and this was definitely the #1 stand out of the 5 shirts I saw and most of the group I was with agreed.
We need more of this type of film.
I do not want to give any spoilers, just know this will be worth your short while! :)
Summary: One of the Best Shorts I've Seen!
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
This is not better than the first, stop it
There's much less parallel universe than the first. The show starts with updating is on the growing family of the main Avatar characters in the first Avatar movie. Then it goes right to fighting. We don't really even know why they're fighting, I mean the last movie was in 2009 so does anyone remember? They're fighting just to fight and there's not real story provided as to why.
I'm not impressed with the storyline that took all these years to make. Very lazy.
Many younger viewers maybe didn't even see the first one so aren't even basing their reviews on the better version.
It's subtitle is about water so it's no surprise there's a water society of avatars. That was a cooler part of the show.
I don't know why it needed to be 3+ hours.
It is not better than the first if you've seen both.
1899 (2022)
This is Horrible!
10 mins of actual script writing is about 30 mins of film. The long pauses and repetitiveness and time consuming shots searching and showing the same stuff over and over - ugh. I had to watch beyond the 3rd episode on fast forward, play, fast forward, play to keep my own freakin sanity - and even that felt painful & slow.
How many cuts to the fake ship do viewers need to see?
How many times does the line "this isn't real" need to be said?
How many circles around looking at the same thing in the room? Saw it the first time.
I can't comprehend how anyone would say this is good given the redundancy and lack of explanation for so much weirdness.
Only positive, it's cool all the different languages spoken. That's all I got.
Best grandpa award ever.
Go team triangle.
The theme song hurts my ears.
Oh sure all the technology and time travel and impossible from reality stuff yet it all comes down to focusing a cheap little key around the neck. Yeap. Sounds legit.
So Stupid. Sorry.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Is This Comedy? Not Funny.
The first episode was so bad but I thought it might be like The Orange is The New Black where it gets better. This show doesn't get better it gets worse, but at times improvement seems possible.
Please don't waste your time if you value logic & intelligence!
It is so ridiculously fake and unrealistic that my mind can't even conceptualize how many dropped casserole dishes are possible.
This was recommended in a Facebook group and I wish I never saw the post. I've lost brains cells.
The big reveal ending makes it all so, so much worse.
There's a long list of what is not possible like a father leaving his young female child alone inside a jail cell with a known mass murderer who kills & eats people by happenstance.
The actors get one star.
Everything else is zero stars especially the story and the script writing.
This show gives me non-pre-existing anxiety. Protect yourself and don't watch it!
If this is meant to be dark humor, im not getting it.
Queer Eye (2018)
So Much Love!
This show is the sweetest most feel good show on the planet!! I love how all types of people are the subjects of the show. It doesn't matter where you're from, what you look like, the guys will build them up!! Everyone deserves love and all the cast members unconditionally give it for every single episode. My actual favorite switches all the time so actually they are all my favorite!
I wish all the love, happiness, and joy for everyone involved in this. I also wish more people could be so emotionally generous.
Its happy tears all the time when I watch.
Love love love!
College Behind Bars (2019)
Education is Power & True Reform
Whoever thinks that someone commits a serious crime for the purpose of getting a college education is not very bright. Just stupid politics. Crimes result in bad decisions and bad situations for a multitude of reasons. The opportunity isn't there for each prisoner and it won't be taken on by everyone that's incarcerated. Use your brains on this and see past the ridiculous political spin.
Education is power, it helps you grow and critically think as a human being. It's the closest thing to actual reform in prison versus working out, watching tv, hanging out with other inmates. I haven't heard that they get much therapy in there. What else is gonna "fix" someone?
The fact that nearly 50% of people return to prison within a year tells us that there is little "reform" going on there. If anything they learn even more how to manipulate and be harder criminals. The actual problems, root problems aren't being solved.
If someone is ambitious enough to want to get an education while incarcerated and step away from the BS going on inside while doing their time, that's a great choice! Isn't it cheaper in the long run for tax payers to not have have these people return? For them to go work legally and pay taxes? Isn't it less painful for humanity that inmates do not commit another crime against others? I'd rather an inmate gets reformed & educated than repeat offend on me or someone I care about! Think about it!
Everyone has to remember the costs and who profits from prisons and the volume of prisoners. It's a business especially when privatized and there's money to be made. Even think about suppliers of prison food, clothes, etc. But the righteous thing that we should ALL want is for the prison population to come down. We have so many people in prison in the US versus the rest of the world. Lets get them a chance at being productive when they get out. We should not hope for humankind to be caged.
Anyone can spin something good into something bad and vice versa, as shown in the debates in this documentary. But, educating prisoners while doing their time is good for humanity when they get out!! This isn't a bad thing!
We give politicians second chances all the time! Yet they preach such condemnation on others.
Let's truly give others another chance at life and getting it right. So many are so young when they made bad decisions and I know everyone has done something stupid but many didn't get caught, especially when young.
Past criminals aren't going to disappear off the earth and most will get out of jail one day. Do you want them reoffending on you cause they have no other tools to survive?
This was an excellent watch and insight into real lives of people. Kudos to the students and the teachers and everyone who participates in this opportunity!
I'm so proud of all the students who worked so hard and would hire one of the graduates in a heartbeat!
The Unforgivable (2021)
Redundant Flashbacks
This movie is decent, I gave 7 but really a 6.5. The thing that drives me crazy most is the over & over again flashbacks cutting to the scene when the little sister was 5. We get it that they're remembering their past. But, to cut back to it so many times drive me a little bonkers. It's the same scenes, too. Not very different. The piano on her arm and she plays piano... ok got it. Her at the house and at the diner - they must've cut back to those same scenes like 50 times? 1/3 of that would've been sufficient, we get the point of remembering. Why so many? Director or editor didn't need to be that redundant. We get it the first time. Don't need 49 more. Maybe 4 more?
It was weird that every kid was doubled. Why is that, I wonder? The two sisters looked like twins (they're not but looked alike). The two boys in the old but remodeled house looked like twins. And the woman at the fish market who's dad was a cop had two nephews who looked like twins.
It was weird why so many kids x2?
I don't get it.
Selena: The Series (2020)
So Boring, Whiter than Me and I'm White.
The main actress... she's not Selena. Finally, we have an opportunity for a curvy, gorgeous, brown woman to shine. But, hey going Hollywood as per usual, razor thin & pale skin wins.
Her voice is so awkward, and crumbly. As if her performance feels forced.
Look, be who you are. Be skinny. Be fat. But who gets the most gigs? Who gets accepted more?
As I look up REAL photos of Selena, the real deal is not represented here and that's sad.
Seems Jackson 5-ish with the controlling dad and submissive wife but portrayed in a way to seem like everyone's happy - wtf.
I'm so bored with the series and fast-forwarded a lot. Just can't take the long pain of nothing happening.
Slow and so manufactured.
Sons of Anarchy (2008)
Dragged it on Too Long! Redundancy Ruined it.
They should have ended this series much much sooner. The first few seasons were fantastic. Then, the plot just seemed to loop over and over again and again. I can still hear the words "my family" repeating over in my head even though it's been several years since watching the show. That's only the "one" family that mattered in the show, of course, centered around the main character but others have families, too.
My thoughts are if they would've ended this sooner maybe 3 seasons or so, 4 or whatever, it would have really done the show more justice. For me the redundancy just got painful in the end and I couldn't wait for it to be over - finally.
The acting by Katey Sagal and Kim Coates were so good! Of course others as well including the "hot" blonde one. Lol
My rating would be so much different if they didn't drag it out to 7 seasons.
Hollywood (2020)
Beautiful Rewrite of History
Effing beautiful rewrite of American history, but not just American, all Countries histories because nearly every place has shown discriminatory hate.
Bravo! This past reality would have been better.
And it's still possible that we can make this a reality for the future.
The Pharmacist (2020)
Profound Love, Determination, & Wrongdoing
The Pharmacist is a father who so deeply loved his son that nothing could stop him from finding justice after his murder. He acted as law enforcement by relentlessly pursuing the truth himself regardless of what it took to get there. Yet another story exposing shoddy police ineptitude to follow the leads staring them directly the face. This father had no fear when up against the need for answers. It's a sad story but also a story of strength for multiple people involved in the unfortunate events.
Then the next phase of this multifaceted story continues as the pharmacist returns to work and notices the early signs of abuse of OxyContin, a highly addictive and overprescribed opioid. He feels for the loss of his son that died too young and that compels him even more to do his job harder to save other kids and parents from future, preventable emotional hardship. Again the pharmacist must invoke on an independent crusade in the name of righteousness. This time his target was the crooked, drug peddling pediatrician who had no regard for life or respect for responsibility.
The third and final chapter delves into the white collar drug dealers, Purdue Pharma, and all the human destruction in the name of Sackler family, salespeople, and medical professionals profits.
