Madame Web (2024)
Enjoyable. We had a good time.
We saw this yesterday in the theater and we kept waiting to see how bad this was going to be. Yes, the soundtrack didn't match the lips for Tahar Rahim's character Ezekiel. In fact, we think he was miscast from the start. Very little personality and there are so many better options out there. I think they abruptly changed the dialog and script so much at the last minute, there was no choice but to dub over the voice instead of just reshooting the scenes - but it was painfully obvious when it was happening and really gave the movie an amateurish feel.
This movie was set in the year 2003 and by all accounts, it felt as though it was MADE in 2003. It really did but I want to think that it was intentional and if it was, I appreciated it. It's old school, and the periodic attempts at humor or surprise worked in our opinion. We enjoyed the movie and happy we watched it.
I'll be honest, I hope they actually make a sequel - just to see the other characters develop a bit more under Madame Web.
Anyone But You (2023)
Feel good movie - nothing wrong with that
First off, this movie doesn't take itself very seriously. So much so that there are goofy scenes that simulate "outtakes" (but are clearly very choreographed scenarios where the characters are singing bits from Natasha Bedingfield's 2004 hit song "Unwritten").
There are several laugh-out-loud gags and jokes that are really funny and at the end of the movie I'm glad we took the time to drive to the theater and watch it. In fact, I should have gotten a beer and some popcorn.
The part that really threw me off however is right near the beginning when they first meet. After spending some their first night together in his condo, she sneaks out the next morning. Not a big deal, but this completely tears apart the bond they shared the night before AND THIS MAKES NO SENSE!
Totally not realistic for them to have so much hate for each other the next day onward. Totally confusing, but it only temporarily distracted from the rest of the movie once you get over it.
Overall, not a bad rom-com. Kind of forgettable but this wasn't made to win any Oscars. I might have even teared up in a couple of spots so all-in-all that's a win.
Nowhere (2023)
I don't understand how this film is not at a 9+
What is wrong with you people. How anyone could rate this so low is beyond me. I feel like I aged ten years going through this experience. Most of the film is absolute perfection. The survival skills this woman showed ALL WHILE HAVING A BABY!?? What!?? Without the baby this is already a stressful film but having what appears to be a REAL baby in the movie (not a prop or CGI, at least I don't think) and the crying...the crying alone sent me to another place. As a father it was hard to handle. This hands down is one of the most unsettling movies I've ever seen. My only criticism is the whole "dystopian" dictatorship scene in the beginning - I would have left all that out completely. It felt odd and honestly I had little hope for this movie until she awoke inside the container and then the horror began. This was like a low-budget Life of Pi but I cried WAY more in this movie. Wow. So happy I took a chance on this movie but also I need to cower in a corner and slowly rock myself to sleep now.
The Creator (2023)
Dystopian ChatGPT
As an avid fan of futuristic, dystopian films, I was captivated by The Creator's immersive journey into a world teetering on the brink of human-machine conflict. While certain plot elements echoed familiar tropes, the overall experience was captivating and thought-provoking. The film's exploration of artificial intelligence's potential sentience and desire for freedom resonated with our own human struggles for autonomy. It served as a timely reminder of the ethical dilemmas we may face as technology advances at an unprecedented pace. Despite a few far-fetched plot devices, such as the imposing 'Nomad' hovering above Earth, the film's core message resonated deeply, leaving me pondering the implications of our technological advancements and the future we are shaping.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Third hour was the best.
I wanted to rate this higher, but it was a struggle to watch the first two hours. We saw this in a Regal RPX theater and the musical score was deafening. I don't know if others feel the same way but there were many parts where I didn't make out the dialogue. The jumping around between scenes combined with the booming soundtrack underneath made it extremely difficult for me to understand what was happening at all times. I'll have to watch this again, at home, with the subtitles on. That being said, the third and final hour of the movie absolutely blew me away. Wow. We already know Oppenheimer made the bomb. We know the bombs were used on Japan (and WHY didn't Nolan show us that!??) But the AEC security commission review "trial" and the Senate nomination hearings for Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr's role) could have been a standalone movie all by itself and I loved it. I read a lot of people didn't like the third hour but I completely disagree. It's the other way around for me.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
I mean, gawd damn.
A lot of films take you on an emotional roller coaster but for us Marvel fans, this was the creme de la creme. A masterpiece. If you nit-pick any film you'll find holes on top of holes. Continuity errors. Things that happen without reason. This movie has so many super heroes in it, the amount of logic errors are mountainous and also, who cares? We don't watch these movies to pick them apart. We watch them to escape our universe and temporarily enter theirs. This movie could have been better in many ways but it was damn near perfect with all its flaws. Reminds me of humans...
Come and Find Me (2016)
Ummm...wow.
I don't normally review movies on IMDB, but I had to lend a comment on this one. The movie is simple, not hard to follow. It's probably predictable to some, but to me, I followed it blindly...hooked. It was fantastic and had us on the edge of our seats. We knew what was going on, yet didn't know what was going on. For the average movie-goer, those that don't analyze every detail, this movie is a pure gem. Enjoy.
