Perfect... as a fantasy movie should be...
28 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There is not much to say about this one.

Perfect. From the beginning to the end. Heart-touching and wonderful story (or should I say "stories"?), great production. Absolutely flawless. Everyone should see it, especially those with a heart for fantasy and imagination. But also those, which are searching for real heroism or some history lesson. Here it comes all together and it's woven into a net of magic and reality with an end that will maybe make you really feeling the atmosphere of the movie

This movie is an outstanding example of the Spanish cinema of the latest time. A promise, that excellent films are still possible and are not to be made in Hollywood at all.

Should have been left buried under a huge pile of storybooks...
25 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is pathetic, the story is bad told and the at scenes where the movie is trying to be funny, you are laughing - but not about the told joke...

The worst of all is the totally unconnected and jumping-from-here-to-there storytelling. Important facts are presented by-the-way and no one is wondering where the information comes from or why it is important. The same with important figures. And the overall told "story" is so flat that it slips through a closed door.

And also who thinks "Hey, it's an action movie, so don't worry about the story too much" will be badly disappointed. The "action" in this movie is badly done. The fights are not exciting after all. Especially the three minor Fallen Angels are really a joke - sent back to hell in seconds. The final fight astonished me at exactly one point (the solution of the "I have no soul"-problem), but this was only for me being so bored all the time, that I stopped thinking about that really early in the movie.

At last: There are so many logical errors and story-holes in this movie - you can't count them. Also there are continuity errors. The production is just badly done, from the first scrapbook to cutting. Yes, cutting. This is some part for itself. It's juts horrible. In some scenes, important in-betweens seemed to be cut out - at least that is, why I am thinking the movie is told in a jump-by-jump manner.

Finally: The movie is really bad. Don't watch it, if you don't have to. I think fans of the comics will be disappointed. And also fans of Nicolas Cage. I really liked him in "Lord of War". But in "Ghost Rider" his acting is poor. Not to speak of Eva Mendez, which was definitely only integrated for the male audience. That can be proved by any scene she is appearing in.

Better for Theater than Cinema
3 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
"Deathmaker" is an outstanding movie. It's psychologically intense and very well played, BUT...

The major problem of this feature is that the director chose the wrong medium for his project. The story told in "Deathmaker" would fit better into a (classical) theater. The whole setting is placed in one room only, there are less than a dozen actors needed and no (!) optical and only few sound effects are used. Nothing indicates that this story needs all the technical possibilities of cinematography. So this movie is - in my eyes - nothing more than a theater play filmed for distribution of the piece beyond theaters The story itself is quiet slow - many will find it boring or too long. There is nearly no action at all in it. Majorly three people sitting on chairs in a room together and talking. If you can sympathize with this kind of storytelling, then you should watch this movie. Else I can not recommend it.

The things that make us human...
3 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There was already said a lot of real and good things about this film in the huge mass of reviews/comments from other people - so I think I don't have to add much.

This movie is great. It has an intelligent, innovative story, fitting effects and sound, a fantastic type of design in total, good actors and so on and on... They did it all right and with that combination there is only one possible consequence: This movie is a masterpiece. It entertains, it makes you think and shows feelings - and all on the right level of intensity.

I am asking myself, why this movie is so unknown by the majority of the people. Spread the word and invite some friends of yours to watch the movie with you. Especially if these people are fond of dark fiction, unconventional sci-fi or something equal.

Oh, and do not forget to think at least some time about the things that make us human... Else you would forget to do the one thing this movie especially wants you to do.

A modern "Memento mori" / "Carpe diem"
2 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A wonderful movie, which could be seen as a very modern type of (positively turned) "Memento mori" or better as a "Carpe Diem"-note.

The main message of the movie is to take life as it is, with all it's bad parts and good parts, to enjoy it and make the best of it - what absolutely is not equal to "earn as much Money as possible". The focus of the movie is especially on the importance of the family, which is clearly spoken out at the very end of the film. The ending is very emotional, maybe already a bit too pathetic, in total to "Hollywood" - but acceptable due to the fact, that the movie wants to be a film for the whole family first and not an adults drama. So Kids maybe should see a happy ending where I personally would not have needed this.

Beside this the movie entertains with a lot of good comedy parts and little jokes - quiet the right amount not to spoil the entire movie which is in fact facing a very philosophical topic, but in my eyes a bit too less for making this movie a full blown comedy. The acting of all cast is quiet professional, especially Christopher Walkens role "Morty" in well done - absolutely innovative for this role which is normally very stereotyped. You will not expect who he is 'til he actually tells you and still after that I found it very astonishing the way he acts and acted before.

In total a good movie. Missing points to maximum due to the typical Hollywood ending, which makes the movie too predictable, and the totally outworn "I dreamed this all only"-method. It's too many standards in writing, acting and ending to make it a really outstanding movie. But for entertainment and at least some minutes of thinking about your own life and how you are doing it, it will definitely do.

Little piece of art...
2 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There is one very important fact about this movie: Don't watch it with the standard Hollywood concepts in your mind! If you do, you will only be disappointed and maybe give a bad vote to this movie which it doesn't deserve and which it should not get.

On the other side: If you really watch this movie with an open Mind and maybe with some interest in independent stuff or art, then the chance is high that you may like this movie - or should I say this little piece of art? The movie is full of mysteries and you could start to ask questions from the very beginning. Who is that girl? Why is she arrested? Why are there obviously two (or more) different sorts of people? Where did this pyramid come from? Why is it here now? Why has this trial have to place on Earth? Why have the gods to judge over Horus? What did he do? ... and the list goes on and on: Was it an accident that Nikopol was freed? Why did the guys from Eugenics appear and kill the police? What is the reason for the forbidden zone? And who or better what is John? In fact: Not all of the questions will be answered by the movie. A lot of them will still be open at the end of the movie and it will be your imagination to find an appropriate answer to them. This is one of the features that makes this movie so special: You only get a glimpse into a world which is obviously much more complex than our world now. There are social problems, technical chances and most important: metaphysical differences. Gods exists - and much more things that the human Mind cannot take easily.

Although this circumstances really could be annoying on the first glimpse, they actually do not. This is because of the consistent story of the movie, which is only a little part of a much bigger story happening only in your head. It's mainly a story about the last days of a God, and about his wish not to leave into punishment without saving his inheritance. His godly intuition leads him to a girl which is actually one of the very few capable to procreate with the Gods. And there is only one thing he wants to do with her: Procreate! But therefore he needs a human medium, which is hard to find in a world, where anyone seems to be biologically or cybernetically modified. Only when a prisoner gets free who was frozen for decades the God finds in him the compatible medium he searched for... You see: The main storyline is quite plain. Added to it are a lot of interesting characters and some side-stories, which can lead you on false tracks to the story but also give you some more information on the world. There is this political affair with Eugenics and the Senator who is involved in it. There are these beasts, which should have been extincted but are still alive - few but very dangerous, and there is this cop, who is straight on his path for justice, and for revenge...

All this happens in front of something one could call a "cyperpunk" atmosphere of a future New York: Nearly everything seems rotten and decayed, but in the middle of it, there are spots of high technology, if you are wealthy enough to participate in them...

And at the end, you will mainly have learned one lesson: That where powers like Gods are acting, no human action is worth anything. The humans in this movie are spectators, not actors. Humans are puppets, game inventory for a gamble of higher powers - and nothing more...

I here the critics saying that the CGIs could have been better, and I agree: For the high level of the plot and the great atmosphere of the movie (which is also perfectly supported by the music), it is a pity that on some little parts of the movie the effects seem a bit old or bad. But as a glimpse into the future of film art, this movie is an outstanding milestone. Sometimes the borders between real actors and CGI-crafted creatures are blurring... but only sometimes. The effects were the main reason to rate the movie not with a 10.

If you want a philosophical, dark-sci-fi movie you are right to choose this one. If you want space-crafts and explosions and less-brain stories try something else instead.

One of the worst movies of all time! 10+ Reasons...
21 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
1) The color-changing of "V"s jacket and hair makes absolutely no sense throughout the whole movie. It's just an annoying style-feature for nothing.

2) Fights in the movie are all boring to death. "V"s wins. Ever. Even when there are 700 (!) people trying to kill her at the same time. She's just like Superwoman without any real opponent...

3) CGIs are horrible! Even some TV-Shows have better special effects than this movie, Especially when it comes to landscapes or buildings. Sometimes you'll feel like at the beginning of blue-screen technology at all.

4) The movie has no logic at all. Facts are changing during the whole movie. Don't even try to ask yourself things like "Where did that come from?" or "How did she get there?" You'll get mad. There are definitely no reasons available for anything in this movie. No rules to stick on, no orientation point. Everything is possible, at any time.

5) Vampirism? What the hell is in that movie that is connected to this topic? Only the sharp teeth? Again a totally useless style and merchandise item.

6) The dialogs are really stupid, over all pathetic in a way thats not fitting at all and in-consequent.

7) The characters are flat like a mirror. No character development, no depths. And what's worse: Especially "V" seems to be changing her mood the way she feels and way of thinking in secs. She's totally in-consequent, a different person in every scene.

8) The scenes are totally unconnected. In one second the story and characters are here... In the next one they are there, without any link between locations and situations. You will lose orientation during the movie. maybe a compass would help, don't know...

9) The evil guys are more stupid than a piece of sh**. Guards standing there, leaving "V" her time to come in slowly, taking a look around... just like they were stoned or something. Think they all lost their will for life long ago and just waited for their death.

10) Holograms. If there is a hole in the story: Fill it with holograms. The problem: Don't use this trick too often. More than one time a movie is a sign of real poor story-writing...

Finally: This movie is a bad mixture of elements from Kill Bill, Equilibrium, Vendetta and Aeon Flux without any frame. Empty streets, a nameless city, an unknown world and a story thats just brain-twisting.

My recommendation: Burn your copy! Don't watch it!
