Number One (1984)
Don't give up your day job bob (including snooker).
This is a truly dire poor man's version of THE HUSTLER. Poor direction, dull script & a truly terrible non acting central 'performance' by the boomtown rat himself; bob geldof as a drifter snooker pro up against the mob in this shabby TV movie which incredibly got released in UK cinemas (i'd have demanded me money back). Apart from the 'live aid' lead: an otherwise fine cast are completely wasted on numerous snooker scenes which are about as exciting as a hole in the head (GET IT!?). About the only redeeming features are geldof getting a well deserved kicking about 30 minutes into it's duration (if you're still awake by then) & some nostalgic shots of suburban london in the mid 80s.

who all laughed?
I've always felt this film to be merely a vanity home movie project for it's director peter 'bogged down a bit' & his ensemble cast (most of whom can't act). it's supposed to be a comedy but isn't the least bit amusing, totally devoid of wit & is far too self serving for it's own good. the worst thing in it is without doubt colleen camp who's VOICE is particularly grating, irritating & annoying. i've never liked john ritter either for some reason. it's no wonder it bombed upon first release & went straight to video in the UK. for me; it's only redeeming quality is the great ben gazzarra (completely wasted), some poignant WTC shots of 80s NY & of course the stunning appearance of dorothy stratten in tragically her last film; RIP babes, ben et al...
