The Last Duel (2021)
8/10
Great epic and a cinematic relief!
19 October 2021
We don't get many movies like these every year. Everything about it was so good, the sets, the atmosphere, the story and most importantly the characters.

The 3 perspective thing was good but I can understand how it can be problematic for some. It had its boring moments, especially since some scenes are reused which is not-so-good when doing this type of narrative. However, the film was very enjoyable overall, and the end just tops it up, a proper climactic ending.

The music was beautiful too.

I loved it, it is understandable why some people hated it when they were expecting another Gladiator, which it isn't even close to it, but it was rather an enjoyable and interesting take on a true story.

I'll say it. One of Pacino's best.

This is one of the most sentimental pieces of cinema that I have ever seen. Poetically beautiful, love in the careless busy world of New York. It just feels amazing to see how the whole world is going around you and in this little diner you have this amount of emotions, heartbreaks and love going on. And Clair De Lune, oh the amazing Clair De Lune, this was the first piano piece that made me feel the great love for piano that makes me tear up to just the sound of it. I went on a little bit too much but I had to.

It's just beautiful.

I wanted it to be good so I thought I was sleepy
2 July 2021
Turns out I wasn't. First half was solid in building the tension and keeping me hooked, but when things started mixing up, I lost it. It's a 7 because it was fun throughout, the scenes where good, the acting was good, the color grading was great, but when I thought about what got us to this scene and what was the big picture of the story, I really was very confused.

I love Steven Soderbergh, I think this film was fine if it went a little bit more gentle with the character introduction and the story mix-ups. It didn't need this amount of complication.

Overall, worth watching, but don't get your hype up.

The classic case of book readers voting the film to the ground.
17 May 2021
I'm used by now to automatically increase the average rating for films adapted from books by at least 1 star, why? Because the book readers are always the angry ones, they demolish the film just because it obviously doesn't match their wide-spread imagination. Adaptations are always going to be worse for the people who read the novel and I'm surprised people haven't got used to it already.

As of the film, it's good, your-average-mystery-thriller type of good, with a pinch of cliché, still a good crime movie that doesn't fail to do it's purpose, entertain.

On the acting side, I mean am I even allowed to criticize it? It's Amy Adams and Gary Oldman. Of course it's great.

Don't crank your expectations up high, this is not a new, nor original story at all, but it kept me hooked all the time to know what's next, and I think it will do the same for you.

Not disappointed at all.

This was an amazing film that touched on so many topics, but most importantly touched my heart. Just a great story and characters and acting.

7.5 and I don't know what to feel about this
14 April 2021
Is it pretentious, or is the writer brave and followed his artistic choices? That we don't know, or atleast I don't. But the symbolism was too on the nose, and I feel that a better director would deliver the meaning without being too symbolistic to the point where the film on its own doesn't make sense. Still enjoyable and interesting to watch and analyze, not a movie to miss.

I feel helpless in front of movies as such.

Totally better than expected. Heartfelt and beautiful. Watching movies like this makes you just unleash your emotional spectrum, and believe, it's a great thing to experience.

If you are considering watching this, go for it immediately, you won't regret it.

Drama at its peak

Passion, the moving device for human beings. This is a story about passion.

Beautiful moments and great characters. I never had an interest in wrestling, yet this felt very personal.

Amazing Experience.

Just your average not-to-take-too-seriously action comedy.
4 April 2021
Cheesy? Definitely. Enjoyable? Definitely.

Five out of ten for the extra cheesiness or else would've been six as an above average action. Acceptable acting and much lazy writing. Well directed though.

If this is a night where you don't have anything to do or watch, give this a try.

Well that was a surprise!

I knew Scorsese never disappoints but didn't know it that much, most underrated picture by him.

A long night ride in the strange New York. And definitely the strangest.

Funny, witty and paranoid. Great atmosphere and settings that are simple yet effective. These types of stories always intrigued me, ones that happen in one night. I mean how many crazy things can happen?

This movie feels so personal and close to perfection although it's idea is very simple.

Great choices of music too.

One of my best experiences this year so far.

I don't know about the novel, but I can't imagine it would be much better than this masterpiece. Amazing love tale.

Disturbingly great.

A rollercoaster of emotion it is. You go on a full ride with psychotic, naïve and stupid characters and you don't get out of it the same.

The tenseness and terror in some scenes makes the movie even better.

Beautiful cinematography, sets and color grading.

Definitely worth the ride.

Went in expecting less, came out impressed!
26 March 2021
After seeing the conflicting reviews on this film, I hesitated a bit. At the same time they made me want to watch to movie to know what is so bad about it. And as a matter of fact, I was very impressed with what I got.

Fast paced story, great psychotic characters, amazing performances, and beautiful style.

Con movies usually get it right, they give the good story, the surprising plot twists and the well written characters.

This movie is fun. Not the best, sure. Don't get your hopes up for a mind-bending crime story and you're going to have a good ride.

Exteremely well done twisted mystery

Rainy nights, the ideal weather and mood for a great crime story. Other than some clichés, this film gets it right. Dark, twisted story. Spot on acting, characters and general mood.

Never got the Coens.
18 March 2021
Why are all there movies like that? I tried to give them many chances and they fail me. The characters are way cartoonish and over the top, I never understood why they come out this way, I'm sure they cpuld write better characters, seen it happen in NCFOM. Humor wise, just cheesy. There is no smart humor whatsoever, just plain "funny" moments, mostly depend on the overacting delivered by the actors. Will they ever stop repeating themselves and get outside the famous idiots-in-bad-situations? I sure hope so, but seems to me the answer is not today.

Fast paced, well acted. Cage does it right this time.
16 March 2021
A very enjoyable clever film. With con-man movies, it's usually hard to come up with a new idea, they do it very smoothly. It's not the best idea, on the shell, it may seem like your typical con-man movie, in reality, it is full of twists and turns that leave you speculating right until the end. Cage nails the role, same for the other actors. It's a light-hearted, well written and full of twists. Definitly worth a watch.

Great watch!
14 March 2021
Everything about this show is fascinating! The characters are greatly built and varied, especially the teenage ones, who are portrayed exactly as they are, monsters! The music choices and scores, what can I say? Amazing. Every episode I'm eager to find out what music they are going to use and add it to my playlist, it's just great for the mood of the show. Sets and cinematography were gloomy and very atmospheric, the right fit for the show. The acting, Amy Adams rocked her role, same case with all supporting actors. A beautiful show full of twists and reveals, definitly worth a watch.

All over the place.
12 March 2021
Too many characters, narrators, quotable lines, and just anything else. The film is about war in general, in that sense, it contains many washed out characters that seem just the same, not even one of them is memorable, this was one of the biggest fails of the film, the emotional connections. We don't know where most of the characters came from, what are their goals, why are they here. The narration usually adds to the film, in this case, well, it doesn't. It's filled with "quotable" lines that are just useless, it got boring real quick. The first and third act were intensely boring, second act was a bit good. The movie is totally mediocre, meaning it should have a five star rating, why did I give it six? The cinematography. It was just beautiful and well executed, great production design and colors, great special effects.

Great picture with a message to send. Could have been better in terms of narrative, but still a wonderful one. I can't adress the beauty of Foxx's performance enough, so amazing and on point. Not a movie to miss even if you aren't intrested in jazz and it's world.
