Secrets of the Whales (2021)
Fantastic and wonderful videography and effort by the divers.
The footage is superb, and I welcomed the commentary by the divers. Perhaps half of the voice-over narration is informative but, sadly, much of it gets in the way of deeper understanding. Silence (and whale songs) are golden.
The Elephant Queen (2018)
A spectacular film
A year in the life of a family of African elephants: their plight, and that of many other animals who are dependent upon them. The narration is profound, poetic and informative. The cinematography is breathtaking.
Living Proof (2017)
Important expose of Big Pharma's control of treatment therapies for Multiple Sclerosis.
Somber real-life story of a young Canadian man diagnosed with MS who 'does his homework' and learns that conventional treatment for the disease is of little benefit. He learns that diet can lessen the symptoms, and also learns that the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada gets a large portion of its income from the drug companies. MSSC threatens him and refuses to acknowledge that the drugs don't work or that diet may be important.
The Report (2019)
Is is true? Few people know, but...
It's probably about as accurate a portrayal as we will ever see.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Pretty bad
I wanted to like this film, but it didn't hang together well, and the plot was a stretch from the beginning. I've never been to VietNam ('tho I've been to Canada). I think it's important that the reality of the horror of that war be told, and I applaud Spike Lee for tackling the task. But this struck me as a largely superficial characterization entirely dependent on a crazy amount of blood & gore to prop up a very dubious plot. Most Americans should see the insane horror of that war, but it's a story which flops as entertainment.
