Lame story
2 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A few things are quite good about this movie: photography, special effects. Acting is sometimes very bad though and you'll have trouble to believe either in Hannibal the so-called monster, who looks more like a current teenager with a hormone problem, or in the bad guys that made Hannibal into a monster, with their fake accents and contrived evilness.

Anyway, the worst thing in there is probably the story, a typical, boring revenge routine with a twist of cannibalism. I almost stopped it 3 or 4 times but watched it to the end, mostly because of Gong Li.

Tomas Harris has written very good stuff in the past (think of "Red Dragon"), but I suggest he retire and enjoy his savings, because he's only writing crap now. About the director, I won't say a word because I'm a nice person, after all.

Simple, excellent drama
17 January 2004
This drama takes place among car factory workers. The writing and acting are excellent. The character's actions are not always easy to understand, in a way very similar to life ;o). Technically, you will find this movie very close to Dogme rules, in a very natural fashion, though. Go for it.

Beautiful story
28 August 2003
A lot of mystery in this beautiful movie as a terrible story unravels (lots of flashbacks). Very good acting, especially from the main character, played by Caroline Dhavernas, about whom Victor Hugo might have coined his famous phrase: "You're not pretty, you're worse."

Loved it: 9/10

Very good stuff
22 August 2003
Good thriller with some stylistic "innovations" (some similar to what you can see in "Spun", and OK, you might have seen them in previous movies, but still, quite some style here) and a very interesting, no bulls**t female character. One of the few movies which tries to take you into a psycho's head. And, hey, it's ugly !

A masterpiece...
29 May 2003
Warning: Spoilers
* GUARANTEED SPOILER-FREE COMMENT *

We're talking about real world cinema here, do don't expect any fantasy, ornament, or any other Hollywood recipe. But hey, how often do you get hit in the stomach by a movie ? I'll summarize the movie's endeavor by a question : "what's love to a child that has not been loved ?" I will add that in addition to flawless directing, we get fantastic amateur acting, plus a good document on (working class) France in the 60's (OK, not ALL of you out there are interested in that, but i must be honest, right ?).

Plain ununderstandable
22 April 2003
Of course, I have reasons to believe that my IQ is not a lot above average (if at all), but, here, I was really lost. Working through the plethoric and pompous dialogues, the use of english (strong american accent, e.g.: "where is that f***ing girl?") to simulate both polish and german, and the overweight actors, I had a hard time trying to understand the message that has to be there on such a subject. Any help is welcome.

Real women do have curves, and much more...
12 April 2003
* no spoilers (for a change)*

If you love character-based cinema, very good acting, women and if you are still a bit romantic (despite the reality crashing in your face every day), you'll love that one.

A very good "realistic" thriller
11 May 2001
This is kind of a new genre as thrillers are usually felt by the audience to be the product of an overconsumption of addictive, non legal products. Here we have a real situation (in a factory), real personalities (the bad guy is not so bad, a.s.o.), and a very good, rising tension.

One of my favorites, ever...
5 May 2001
A great movie. I saw the uncut version (4 hours), and afterwards, my bottom was completely numb because I had forgotten to move during the whole thing. I am not an american, well I felt like one during this movie and I cannot understand how an american can resist the emotion when faced with that romantic idea (which actually is the fondation of the story) of the country's disappearing frontier.
