Maybe Baby (2000)
Unfunny, uninspiring
This is quite possibly one of the worst comedies I have ever seen. I don't know if I laughed once throughout the whole film! It was terrible. The story of a couple trying for a baby belongs in the world of soap opera and not the big screen. This is especially true when it is clear Ben Elton has nothing funny to write about his true life experience. DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM!!!
The Hurricane (1999)
Very Impressive
I enjoyed The Hurricane immensely. The film is very powerful and is one of those films that you think about for a while after having watched. Whether the film is a true account of what happened ias another matter but things such as Washington's performance make you believe Rubin Carter's story. The only real hitch in the film is John Hannah's accent which is somewhere between Scottish and Canadian but he never really decides which way to go. It isn't plainly obvious what will happen at the end for people who do not know the story (like myself before I watched it) but this film adds another cracker to the 'jail-conspiracy' genre. I'd give this film 8.5/10.
The World Is Not Enough (1999)
Poor stuff
I found myself watching this film and it was all going in one ear (or eye!) and out the other. The 'baddies' are killed all too easily, Carlyle is not given enough screen time and Denise Richards is a joke. The worst bond since Tommorow Never Dies! Goldeneye is Brosnansbest Bond outing.
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)
An absolute joke!
***SPOILERS*** This film has to be the most implausible film in history. First Love Hewitt & co think they have won a trip to jamaica or somewhere on a radio station that doesn't really exist because it is actually the killer on the radio doing the whole competition. (Why is their radio tuned to a station that doesn't exist? How does killer know they're listening?)They get to their island to find there is no one there except a dodgy janitor in the hotel who serves no purpose at all despite appearing suspicious for what turns out to be no reason. Then, the worst part is that the killer from the first movie comes back and is the father of the new killer!! The fact he was swept out to sea isn't mentioned. Also, the whole ending to the first film that I found to be very effective is dismissed as a dream sequence! That ending was why I looked forward to the sequel but then the sequel basically tells you that it was all a dream. This film is very, very poor and Love Hewitt is the only reason to tune into this dismal affair. 2/10
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Garbage.
This film was absolutely boring and uninspiring. Lucas has lost all the charm of the original trilogy and ruined the whole series through this lazy film. Nothing of note happens in the film and the audience are left not caring about an of the characters in the same way they did about Darth Vader, Leia, Skywalker and Han Solo. Most of the film has the appearence of a cartoon due to the overused computer generated effects which are not very realistic at all. If the next two episodes are as dull as this then Lucas should be locked up for defacing the first three films. Lucas should be more proud of Howard the Duck because it is more exciting than this nonsense.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Where is the plot?
For anyone to say this is the best war film of all time has obviously never seen any other war films. The lack of plot in this film is incredible, nothing substantial happens in the whole film. Ok, the cinematography is good so the whole film LOOKS great but thats it. This is a huge dissapointment and shows why Terrence Mallick hasn't directed a film since or for about 20 years before! Saving Private Ryan blasts this film away in every department. Very boring film indeed.
Alien Resurrection (1997)
Not Very Good
This latest Alien film really is poor in comparison to the first two. Winona Ryder's movies (with the exception of Beetlejuice) all tend to be fairly dull and this is no different. Although there is a lot of action you find yourself not being particularly interested in who dies and who doesn't. Better than Alien 3 but still a tired formula which had nowhere inspiring to go after Aliens (1986).
The People Under the Stairs (1991)
GREAT!
I saw this film at quite a young age without knowing who directed or anything and loved it. In a way some of it is quite disturbing and in other ways its a fairytale. Some of its funny, the kids under the stairs are horrible even though you end up empathising with them. One of Wes Cravens best, hugely underrated, 8/10!
Hard to Kill (1990)
Rubbish but good!
I myself am not a Seagal fan because of his acting capabilities but because of the way he plays the same character in every film! As I told friends the basic plot of this film is that Seagal is 'killed' but then comes back and kills everyone who killed him!! Great action set pieces although Seagal never seems to take a hit. Seagal films are basically satirical even though they are supposed to be serious. I'd recommend it for a laugh as some of the script is funny stuff. eg. "F*** You and die motherf*****". Seagal classic and another nice character name too!
