The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Not what I expected, better.
At first, I was confused cause these girls were 13 or 14 and shed in a rather sexual light.
----
I found it interesting that the girls didn't really exist if they weren't out of the perspective of another, like a boy or an adult, or even the general public. We really know as much from an outsider's point of view even at the end of the movie.
I found it funny how they are shown mostly through a male lens but the movie also caters to women. Was it supposed to be some kind of parody joke like in American Psycho?
Also, the Quarterback love interest is not a stereotypical male ideal depicted in film, or at least not at that time. He had softer features yet was tall and had a discerning look. I thought first thing that he looked like a runway model in some magazine. Oh and the haircut he seemed more like out of something like The Princess Bride rather than American suburbia. A sorta girl fantasy for a young girl?
Sometimes they took it a bit far it seemed like they were seducing some boys but these are kids! Like when she rushes into his car after saying goodbye at the door and they start eating each other up? Are these girls in the suburbs or smth like sex in the city? T_T
It ended on a somewhat whimsical note like I said we as an audience don't know more than the general public does. The mother even said that she didn't understand it; "none of my daughters lacked for any love, they're was plenty of love in our house." Indeed, these things aren't as black and white and there are often many factors the timings of these suicides are somewhat questionable tho. It makes it seem like their attempts were a call for attention. (at their basement party, when calling the boys over) both happened directly after/during.
----
I don't think what we see equals the truth. These girls weren't being seductive but they saw them that way. I could also think that she didn't unalive herself at the party but maybe after or in the following days. I don't think she actually wrote their names on her underwear again she is 14! But rather a rumor spiraled and that is said truth now.
A nasty remark one of the boys said when they dropped them off at the dance and said; "Don't let her die a virgin"...
So it's less tragic ...if they've been..used? Like a tissue?
My theory that what we see doesn't always equal the truth might be backed up by the youngest one's diary scene where they said she was a dreamer who couldn't discern reality from fantasy.
I don't want to make this too long but lastly at the "asphyxiation-themed party" an adult jokingly said "Okay now I had it. Goodbye cool world" jokingly falls in the pool, everyone looks knowing it's a gimic and when someone helps in out he says smth like "no no no, you don't understand me I'm a teenager, I got so many problems." (insert laugh track)
----
End Notes.
I think the movie isn't what you think it is. They said 80 teenagers a day kill themself every day in America. That street is a reflection of it. The American dream is where u turn the woman into the girl. The notion that women are worth less once their "virginity has been taken" (Interpreted from the fairytale quarterback romance)
It's not only about the falsehood we live in but that we or the grown-ups contribute to it being a false dream. (they say they all want to forget about their suicides but make an asphyxiation-themed party?!)
An interesting watch but I don't know if what I said was the intention behind this movie but I do think it's a twisted dream-a-fied tragic reality. Similar to girlhood you know, when you go from drawing unicorns and believing in Santa just a second ago and now being sexualized and misguided by grown men. Your fairytale world slowly collapses as you are introduced to the actual one.
That is my hot take on the movie thank you for reading!
Yeoshingangrim (2020)
Could've been great..I'd say I'm dissapointed but its a copy and paste as to be expected of this uninspired world
Another klichè "not another teen movie" or she's all that. The "ugly girl" loses her ponytail and glasses and suddenly everyone likes her.
In a way It does portray aspects of society but honestly we have enough of these kind of movies in hollywood, its something special cause its not from the West?
"The ugly girl" is always played be conventionally attractive actresses. Mun Ka-Young really is stunning to look at and I see how in our vain society we like to watch things with picture perfect people in them but how this show got executed really is disappointing. I was so rooting for the initial plot that might show characters as not only entertaining to get to know but that have dynamic.
The "ugly" girl, the cold guy, the delinquent with a soft side...did a teenager write this? Honestly initially I did enjoy it but as it progressed something didn't sit right with me.
I suppose its just a fantasy isn't it. Mun Ka-Young putting on what they call "ugly makeup" and seeing these characters go crazy for her even if she isn't conventionally attractive...oh wait she is. Also Ironically the person portrayed as "so ugly she has to cover her face up" just looks like the only one not wearing makeup, everyone around her is wearing a full face even some of the guys!!
In real life no amount of makeup can cover up extremely bad acne, chubby cheeks and thick thighs. In the Drama she mentions that people couldn't pick her up because she is too heavy like.. okay either its body dysmorphia awareness month or the writers didn't catch on that the actor is an actual model.
This show could've brought controversy to bullying, teen suic!de and young people wanting plastic surgery. Even society forcing them in some ways to get some. But no another makeshift show that doesn't even put the bandage on things.
No wonder korea's birth-rates are sinking, think of the girls for once instead of another corporate money maker at the expense of the sanity of the population who isn't blessed to be born a true beauty. Which believe it or not is most of us. Usually woman don't look like cartoon characters yet today we're expected to.
But hey great job. I'm sore the cosmetic companies can profit off this. Keep the plastic surgery business while were at it! What a great world we lie in :))
Btw even though the main character family is supposedly broke she wears designer clothes?? Like I get it they're pretty but costume designers be for real..It makes scenes that the rich guy wear Burberry but rlly the girl?
I know "The Glory" was may darker but even in this bubbly format you can get real societal problems across without sugar coating so it will make more money. Nobody can take risks anymore its all just about the money money money.
Anyway I'm done with this show and what it's supposed to be. Makeup doesn't personally cut it so I'll book a flight to korea and the next facial reconstruction surgery when its available. Some diet pills while were at it cause let's be honest a pretty face just ain't enough is it.
The shows a fantasy I've come to terms with that. I fear if things are ever getting better though.
Anne of Green Gables (1934)
Poor representation of Anne's character even for its time
It's nice to see how different some films try to represent the classic book, I'm not too concerned about any cinematic visuals it is the characters that differ from the book, at the heart of it they're similar but they got some executions of the characters wrong particularly of Anne Shirley, Gilbert Blythe and mathew cuthbert. The romance between Anne and Gilbert wasn't much like the book as she hated the boy with stubbernous intensity for quite some time only to later discover she might have feelings for him. Gilbert doesn't have to be thaat dumb I'd rather they just had use of some of the books charm concerning this. Anne fighting for Gilbert's attention in the early stages just isn't Anne. Also the merged Diana's parents with marillas friend oh I forget her name but she was quite the nosy character (good thing; like in the book) as in the film but Diana is from a richer family it was abit surprising to see that creative choice. Well I give it a 6 cause it's a charming story in the format of a film it can easily feel too rushed. Oh and could've given Anne some freckles, I mean she says she's a little freckled but u can't see them.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Mediocre at best
The cinemas atmosphere was the best thing about the film, all i can say its alarmingly overhyped both irl and online but u can see around now that this film wasn't memorable whatsoever. It wasnt particularly good, not Bad eather just mediocre enough to mark it up as something its not..."a masterpiece".
