Panchayat (2020)
Best webseries
Panchayat, TVF new web series that is being streamed on Amazon Prime Video, crackles with promise in its early episodes. Written by Chandan Kumar and directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra, the series quickly sets up its principal characters and solidly establishes their personalities and their personal dynamic.
Abhishek Tripathy is cast as an employable but rather bleakly-positioned working-class Indian who has no choice but to take up a job as a secretary in a village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh. As Abhishek Tripathy, brings in his trademark laconicism and a smirking disdain for administrative and moral strictures.
His place of work, Phulera, is a village that is best seen from top of the water reservoir. But Tripathi has a fear of heights. So falling in love with this village.
Tripathi rides his bike into the village and he meet our key players here. The Gram Pradhan is Manju Devi who is the Pradhan because Govt. decided that that seat was to be occupied by a woman and her husband propped her up. The 'Pradhan-Pati' is Brij Bhushan Dubey , her husband, who is the main man.
Brij Bhushan is a good man, not a shrewd politician, contrary to what the previous statement might have suggested. He's even surprisingly nonconfrontational for a politician and finds it physically impossible to lie. "Yeh bhi nahin kar sakte, kaise Pradhan hai aap?" asks a straight-talking Manju Devi, and Yadav retorts, "Hum aise Pradhan hai," as he helps his wife change pillow covers and bedsheets.
Manju Devi and Brij Bhushan's daughter, a character introduced as Rinki, never even comes on screen - until the last scene. We hear her voice only. And realise her presence when the parents are hunting for a suitable groom for her or each time Brij Bhushan's phone rings to the popular Bhojpuri track Rinkiya Ke Papa. Both Faisal Malik as Upapradhaan and Chandan Roy as the office errand boy are surprise packages, but Chandan steals our heart. He is adorable. Phulera has no real issues save for where to install the 13th solar-panel light sanctioned by the government or the little jealousy that a cushioned revolving chair can cause. Between these simple lines lies the real story. The 13th light must be installed at the Bhoota Ped or the haunted tree - superstition or that the previous 12 lights have been distributed amongst the Pradhan, Upapradhan and the other ward members instead of actually using them for village welfare. The only action and thrill you get are when boys from a neighbouring village declare a gully fight with Abhishek which results in a hilarious exchange, leading to him cracking his own skull by mistake.
The ending, not that it's lazy writing, but is predictable. In the end Abhishek teach Manju devi the National anthem. And therefore, almost sticks out like a sore thumb. But it still serves a purpose helping Abhishek to find himself, or just being able to be comfortable being himself.
This web series is so much addictive. The 8 episodes are really good.
