Most Shocking (2006)
Dramatized and falsified
This show is basically a modern day drama of cowboys and indians... or cops and robbers... many of the "criminals" are being chased only because they panicked and ran... why are they still chasing ppl like dogs after rabbits... we're all being tracked from the cradle to the grave now... pointless drama.
Ice Road Truckers (2007)
Real drama... not real life
Ice Road Truckers is a fair effort to hold the viewing public's attention. Not great, not terrible. The first 2 seasons were great, when they were actually following career ice road drivers going about their daily duties. But when their drivers started roaming the Earth looking for bigger risks and new cast members, it stopped being reality. It was a bit candy coated when Lisa, the piece of fluff who can do anything a man can do, had her first breakdown on the road. This super-woman who can outdo any man begged the men drivers to come and fix her truck while she stopped competing with them for a couple of hours. What reality!!! Not...
When they went to India and South America looking for substandard roads and substandard trucks, they lost all touch with reality. That's where they crossed the line between questionable reality and just looking for a spectacle... and taking risks just for the sake of ratings. It was no longer their job to be delivering vital supplies to bleak outposts. Their job was now to enthrall viewers by making dumb-ass videos.
But all critical comments aside, there are worse shows these days. It's a watchable show, providing the viewer isn't wanting to invest their time wisely.
Production companies should not be allowed to market their products as "reality"... their shows have support crews and producers and even scripts for when they get boring. These reality shows feature common people who are doing whatever it takes to be a star. For all practical purposes, they are scamming the public. Even the news is always given a perspective that is compromised in some ways. The only video you will ever see that is real is captured on security video. Sometimes a bystander at an accident or event will capture some real video. But if there is any commentary, it is biased and is not reality.
Everything else is drama. And so is Ice Road Truckers.
Judge Mathis (1999)
Get a life and stop watching this crap
This show has nothing to do with law or justice. Some government agency needs to put a stop to these mud-slinging contests pretending to be the legal system in action. Basically, the "judge" allows the opponents to slander each other for a few minutes and then declares a victor without ever being presented with a shred of real evidence that is relevant to the "trial". The last straw for me was watching a woman who evicted a tenant. The landlord was being denied damages because the tenant called her a low life of some sort and the judge took one look at her and agreed. What just happened? People actually watch this going on and return to watch it again? Get a life, people.
Beauty and the Beast (2012)
Failure is in the eye of the beholder
If you're into watching scrawny little girls beat up big strong criminal boys (yeah, right), then maybe you can overlook the failure of this show to have any value at all. Our little princess police woman arrests her own father, shoots her boyfriend, cuts herself a wide swath... marking her territory everywhere she goes. Can anyone here say conflict of interests? A moot point. This bastardized version of a classic story is entertaining in a comic book sort of way, but don't expect any substance here. Our ninety pound female lead is a sort of a poster child for fantasy feminism where all men are corrupt, evil, and in need of punishment... and of course where all women are enlightened, empowered enforcers who harvest favors from the men they entrap, betray and crucify. The cop lady judges, condemns, even shoots her precious beast and this pretty boy beast just keeps coming back to be set up and knocked down again... ah, the miracles of being in love. It would be easy to imagine an Energizer Bunny in all of the leading roles. The pretense of this fiasco is about as believable as a monster made of cotton candy. My suggestion would be to turn down the sound and glean what little eye candy comes your way from this piece of fluff. Don't expect much and you wont be too disappointed. I used to think Miss Kreuk had so much class, but it seems that I was wrong. Maybe there are some good episodes that I haven't seen.
Gunsmoke: The Sharecroppers (1975)
A light-hearted send-off, jesting at our entanglements and petty conflicts
This 635th and final episode of a great American classic deserves much more than the trashing the other reviewers have given it. They are absolutely right that it lacks fancy plot and character development and fights to the death. This last episode presumes that the viewer doesn't need any further lessons in morality that the previous 634 episodes bludgeoned them with. It's a fresh and light-hearted tribute to the chaotic, petty entanglements that our world was built upon. In the end, everything works out for the best and the chaos continues presumably forever. This final tongue-in-cheek peek through the keyhole into the convoluted nature of our existence is very refreshing. For those of us who can see the forest in spite of the trees, it tells a truly meaningful story... with all of life's drama and problems and entangled obligations, it is still worth living.
...And the lesson in life never ends... Don't judge this quaintly tangled tale too harshly, it was meant as an uplifting send-off and not something to be critically acclaimed or bashed.
Happy trails to all who made this series the icon that it was.
Daniel Boone: Tanner (1967)
An excellent portrayal by Neville Brand
I remember watching this episode when it was new. The character depth and acting by all were top notch. But the irony and realism conveyed by Brand were in a class of their own even now, nearly 50 years later. The scene where he, the delusional mad man was killed was very powerful. His character was afraid and trying to do the right thing... but the mind of a sociopath is a murky place. When he was killed, he didn't understand why and it was so sad... and he played it to the hilt. It still brings tears to my eyes even now. The old westerns and frontier and historical dramas aren't real big in today's pop culture, but this one is a must see...
12 to the Moon (1960)
Good insight into pre-space flight culture
This movie has been misunderstood and slammed by some of the reviewers. At the time of the production in 1959, we still didn't even know exactly what the Earth looked like from space! All we had were a pitiful few almost useless "trophy" satellites careening around the Earth... Martians and intelligent life on Venus were still open topics for scientific discussion! It was a great time for speculation and open-minded thought. And on the other hand, the Cold War era movies always had to have a political morality issue thrown in... they actually still tried to put values into their work. Todays audiences should be proud to stand on the shoulders of the people who built the world they have the luxury of spitting on. It's actually pretty cool to watch the maker's conception of future space exploration. It's a shame we are too prejudiced to share their dream for an hour or so. The rocket may resemble a butane lighter and the meteors may not be real, but hey... it's an old movie!!! Get a grip on yourself and a bowl of popcorn and enjoy this piece of pre-spaceflight speculation for what it is.
Smallville (2001)
A great TV show
This show is without a doubt one of the better ways to kill an hour of your life in front of the TV... :) ...Great production value, great performances, big budget, and even the sex appeal that we all want and need... :) I applaud the whole product. Yes, this is a product. The original story of Superman has been butchered to death here. Has the whole world so eagerly been persuaded to believe that Superman's family and whole civilization wasn't destroyed in a cataclysmic disaster? It's been so gradually bastardized over such a long period of time, not many of us seem to remember the original, authentic story line.
The writing is creative and fun and original. But it doesn't bear much resemblance to the original Superman story. If they were going to change the scenario so much, they really had no right to use the Clark Kent and Lois Lane names. It would have been much less derivative and fake if they'd have used original names for the characters and towns and home world.
The endless parade of eye candy kept the show on the air and watchable for a long time. A long long time. Seemed like forever... Goodbye Superman, wherever you are now that your whole life and history has been deleted and replaced with fluff.
Brimstone: Lovers (1999)
The Devil has so much fun...
This episode has some good blues and Hispanic sound tracks that are worth mentioning... but only in passing. The "hero" begins this installment buying a car from his boss (the devil) for all the money he has in his pocket. Leave it to the devil to sell his right hand man such a piece of crap to ride around in doing his bidding. Ha ha!!! Evil characters are always so much fun... The acting and character development here are all top-notch and apparently everyone involved were taking this show seriously, even though the executives who canceled it so prematurely were not. The Devil will deal with them in his own sweet time, I'm sure... :):):) Does anyone smell Brimstone???
Herman's Head: Love Me Two-Timer (1993)
Memorable Lita Ford
It's been so long since I saw this episode, but I will remember one scene from it forever. I hadn't even heard of Lita Ford, but when she came up to Herman's desk and told him she left her panties at his place and she wanted them back... She was just way too hot to forget! She burned an image of herself into my brain that will never heal. At least I hope not... Since then I've looked her up and found out she's really a good musician and songwriter, having done lot's of good work. Amazon sells a video collection of hers, and she did at least one song with Ozzy Osborne. In conclusion, I would like to say Lita I love you... I rest my case!
Bitten (2008)
Hugely entertaining
A great way to kill some time... Watch this movie and you'll not regret it! It has the usual elements of vampire movies... seduction, carnal appetites, the innocents, the guilty... but in this one there are scenes that imprinted themselves into my consciousness probably forever. The image of a beautiful nude female vampire covered with blood and thrusting on top of her deceased victim is so surrealistic and and unforgettable I had to break my silence and write a spoiler about it. The makers of this film obviously devoted some thought to the dark world of vampires. Or maybe they were just having fun with it... in either case, it's a must see! If you want reality, turn off your TV and go outside... but if you want to be entertained, watch this one! Hopefully it will someday be released in the US without being cut to death... :)
