Taggart: Judgement Day (2008)
A brilliant episode
Having been an fan right from episode 1 when the program didn't even use the 'Taggart' name i never enjoyed the shorter episodes of the later series but this one is a total stand out for me with towering performances from both Alex Norton & Ewan Stewart as his brother & the emotion shown by both is absolutely outstanding ?
The subject matter is very harrowing but all the cast made it a joy to watch & i tell you at times there wasn't a dry eye in my house ?
Badly missed Taggart is & i believe it will return with Robbie & Jackie both promoted & ready to fight crime on the streets of Glasgow some more....
Taggart: A Death Foretold (2005)
Not as great an episode as some make out......
I've watched this episode several times & apart from the powerhouse performance by the stunning Blythe Duff the plot is so thin the killer is known very early because in a Glasgow based series when in the church his Edinburgh accent shines through too easy & i'm surprised the producers never picked up on this themselves ? My other problem with this episode is that it shows up the RC church for what it is with killers being hidden as it is a law upon itself which is totally wrong but at least our Jackie told the priest what she thought of him at the end ? I love Taggart but this is one of my least favorite episodes......
Play for Today: Just a Boys' Game (1979)
Perfect
Make no bones about it folks, This masterpiece is the best television drama 'EVER' to come out of bonny Scotland !! Frankie Miller is not only Scotlands greatest ever singer, Given a few more lucky breaks he should have been one of our best ever actors as well. The supporting cast of Ken Huchison (Murphy's mob, The Sweeney) & a youthful Gregor Fisher (Rab C Nesbit, Naked Video) just make this a joy to watch, Its great the BBC have at last released this on DVD as it hasn't been on TV for at least 20 years !! The song that runs over the credits at the end (Rules of the game) can be found on the remastered Frankie Miller CD Once in a blue moon.
Play for Today: Just Another Saturday (1975)
Great stuff
This has got to be one of the best done Scottish dramas of all time, Its the story of a young lad who likes the idea of being the big man bigot but when it comes to the crunch he just becomes appalled by it all, He loves the music & the dancing but its the booze & the fighting that gets him down, Some of the acting is a joy to watch (just listen to Billy Connelly's joke about the woman who kills her husband !!) The only problem is that the program shows all that is bad with Glasgow & the West of Scotland, The sad fact is that although this drama was filmed in 1974 the Protestant/Catholic divide is as bad as ever & i don't think it will ever get better.
