The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
People writing reviews on this take themselves WAY too seriously.
It was a fun movie, with more references and Easter eggs than anyone could pick up in one viewing. If you played the games, it's amazing for that - WITH a cute storyline (apparently some of these critics should go watch more Shakespeare or something - idk what they're expecting from an animated video game movie). My kids have only played mariokart and didn't catch all the references but still LOVED it. Can't wait to see it again. And going to see any subsequent movies as soon as they come out!
Even the opening scenes which are always more to build up to the story had my kids cracking up so loud I felt like I should quiet them down (they're 3, 4, 6 for reference) so it was fun just for that. But my husband and I were catching each other and laughing at all the nostalgic awesomeness and some of the jokes as well.
Did Jack Black need to have a song? Probably not lol but was it perfect? Obviously.
Don't go into this movie expecting it to change your life. It's a fun little brain break. Don't let all the uptight reviews sway you from taking it.
Loot (2022)
Super cute, very watchable
I'm looking forward to any future seasons. But it's not going to like stick with me forever, and I probably won't go back and rewatch the season at a later point which is why my rating. But I did enjoy it!!
I think each of the characters ends up being pretty likeable. Especially maya rudolphs character - I know it's not supposed to be a super serious drama or anything, but even as a comedy I was hoping she wouldn't be TOOOOO over the top the whole way through, nor be too "down to earth" super fast again. I thought they played it well, and it worked.
The only thing through all the comedy was how angry I was thinking about how people actually HAVE that money and live that way. Which I think is their point too.
Sex/Life (2021)
It was pretty good
Don't watch it if you have like a dusty hoo-ha and the alternative you're deciding between is televised church sermons. I sincerely don't understand what the people writing the reviews of this show thought they were getting themselves into - it's very much what I had expected. Which is a super watchable and pretty steamy drama series.
Overall I still feel pretty bad for Cooper but I guess sometimes that's just how it is. I also appreciated the second season made Billie seem more attentive to her kids because that was my chief complaint with season one. It felt like, oh let's keep up the stereotype that only crappy moms are allowed to care about their own happiness. Season two brought a lot more balance. Overall I liked it.
About Time (2013)
PERFECTION
I have watched this movie about a hundred times. It's perfect. The first time was on a plane where the person seated next to me most assuredly thought I was insane - I cried, I literally laughed out loud, and everything in between. This might be my all-time favorite movie. They are fantastic together and the message is so beautiful. But then there's these super cute and super real moments between them that don't feel manufactured for the sake of creating drama - just real human things. The scene where she's trying on dresses is perfection. It's so grounded in such very real emotions that you almost forget it's got a supernatural / sci-fi element to it. I'll watch it a hundred more times, easily ;)
Midsommar (2019)
Wish I could get my time back
At least Hereditary held some promise and then ended kind of poorly. This one was boring, uneventful, pointless the whole way thru. The reviewers that say otherwise must take themselves pretty seriously. If you aspire to be a "cerebral horror" film critic you may find this one worth watching. Otherwise, I'd save you time and point you to something - anything - else.
The Starling (2021)
Laughing while I cried, or crying while I laughed
This movie was nearly perfect, and I can't imagine that the reviews that say otherwise are by parents, or just generally people with souls. It's so moving, and so beautiful. And maybe the cast makes some think it will be some raunchy/raucous comedy, which it's not. But I think they did so well that I still did laugh, and I definitely cried, and got angry, and managed to feel all these emotions at the same time. It was just stellar.
