The Florida Project (2017)
Terrible!
Perhaps if it just ended with the kid crying in front of another kid with a blank, uncomprehending stare. Then, perhaps, a worthy message or meaning could be derived from the film. But no. They make a terrible movie that's pointless, base and amoral; and then, apparently the director/produce feels a happy ending is required. So, they add on the two kids running into the Florida theme park. The movie is absolutely painful to watch. Dafoe earns a paycheck, but the movie itself is unfortunately a waste everyone's time. Why tell such a negative, degrading, non-story with a trite, senseless ending - two children running, happily apparently, into the amusement park?
This Is the Army (1943)
Cast Advertising Problem
How is it possible that IMDb and AT&T advertising for this movie's broadcast on cable TV channel TCM on 4/9/2023 didn't include Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States, as one of the people having a role in the film? The movie information did mention George Murphy and several other actors and actresses, but not Ronald Reagan! Isn't that a bit like reviewing a performance of the play "Our American Cousin" on April 14, 1865 and not mentioning that Abraham Lincoln and John Wilks Booth were present?
More characters are required to post this review, so here comes another 16 or so. This review contains no spoilers. It does note inadequate information given when broadcasting this film. Can anyone imagine going to a movie theater and not seeing posters of who is in the film and what it's about as you buy a ticket?
Kajillionaire (2020)
Bad, Really Bad!
This movie is bad. It's so bad that there's nothing about it that can be spoiled because it's absolutely rotten to begin with and really, really stinks from the beginning to the end. The characters aren't funny and of little interest. There's absolutely no discernible plot. It's senseless, pointless and a complete waste of the viewer's time. Films in math class about fractions and how to add, subtract, divide and multiply were more exciting and insightful.
Midsommar (2019)
A real stinker.
This movie is bad. How bad is this movie? It's bad. It's very bad. It has little to no discernible plot. On the positive side the film shows a lot of green fields. It's not a nature film, nor a golf movie. Still, if you like the color green (and I'm not talking money) this movie might be in the running as a favorite. If you're not particularly interested in the color green, however, this movie has little to offer. As I stated earlier, it really, really stinks!
Queen of the Morning Calm (2019)
Spoiled child in control leads to predictable result.
Enjoyable to watch Tina Jung. Too bad her character spoiled her brat of a daughter who probably needed just a good talking to or a solid whack on her little behind. But then there wouldn't be a movie or calm morning queen. Will Smith's "The Pursuit of Happyness" presents a superior version of a single parent's struggles and far better parenting skills.
The Lost Patrol (1934)
Patrol lost in history and myth
"The Lost Patrol" uses the WW1 Siege of Kut when British forces became surrounded by Ottoman Turks and were shockingly forced to surrender as a backdrop for the dangers and threats confronting human civilization in the early 1930's. Will civilization face the same fate as the British army in Mesopotamia which became leaderless? Instead of viewing "The Lost Patrol" as simply a war picture as many reviewers seem to do, look at it as an apocalypse, Ford's hoped for version of Armageddon a' la 1934. After all, in WW1 as accurately portrayed in the movie "Lawrence of Arabia" the Arabs and the British were basically allies, on the same side. By1934, however, the League of Nations made Britain responsible for governing former parts of the Ottoman Empire such as Palestine and Iraq. Could Britain maintain control of an ever restive population and enlarged empire? In the modern age religion appears irrelevant, weak and counter productive. As for the airplane and its pilot being a hero and coming to the rescue of a civilization on the eve of destruction, did Hitler flying over Germany in 1932 bring hope or would he bring death and doom? Ford didn't actually know the answer to that question when this movie was released. We do.
The Long Voyage Home (1940)
Don't waste your time.
Notable actors doing all they could with next to nothing other than a setting.
The Ledge (2011)
What if ...
If the antigonist was portrayed as an adherent of Islam, Judaism or militant atheism, would a movie called "The Ledge" even be made?
