Japón (2002)
A magical romp
This is minimalist cinema at it's zenith. A man's journey to the end winds up only a beginning. Drop what you think you know and everything becomes clear. See this movie!
Man of the House (1995)
A bloated Chevy Chase and a beautiful Farrah Fawcett
Can't save this flaccid film. The only reason to watch is for the Ryan O Neal cameo. Luckily this comes in the first 5 minutes so you can go about your day.
Rogue Male (1976)
Obscure gem from O'Toole
Saw it in 1980 and it haunted me for 30 years until I was able to track it down and watch it again. O'Toole gives one of his best performances in this taught thriller. Excellent supporting work that adds color to the washed out look of the film.
Bachelor Mother (1939)
Another 1939 classic
Terrific sentimental comedy headlined by two of the greatest performers that ever lived - Charles Coburn and Ginger Rogers. The good thing about this film is that it zigs when you think it's going to zag. Watch it for the sudden transformation of Coburn and the way Rogers uses her eyes to display her frustration when nobody believes her. There is also a cute cameo by an early wind up Donald Duck.
In This Our Life (1942)
Heavyweights do their thing
I'm a huge John Huston fan so I watched because of him. Halfway through the movie I'm thinking ' this is Huston?' It had nothing of what he became famous for. No grand schemes or pot of gold to be chased. This film was way ahead of it's time and does share Huston's love for showing us that just because you have money, doesn't make you happy or moral. In fact, it's just the opposite. Without giving away any spoilers, this film should be watched because of the great performances from Davis, DeHaviland, and George Brent. The supporting cast shines as well. If you are looking for some of Huston's famous humor, you will be disappointed. Instead here you will be treated with great performances, direction, and a morality tale that still outshines anything made today. Olivia De Havilland shows why she will always be one of the best. She gives such a fantastic and subtle performance that still outshines anything you can see today.
On Borrowed Time (1939)
Another 1939 Classic
This timeless gem is over 80 years old and holds up as well as today as it did in 1980 when I first saw this film. This movie deals with the biggest issue of life and that is death. My heart lept when Grandpa tricked Mr. Brink into the tree and was broken when I realized that the world cannot continue without death. Death is as natural as a young boy's love for his Grandfather. Barrymore's performance is so memorizing that it took me 3 viewings to realize he made the entire film without the use of his legs. The entire cast is outstanding. Watch this with your family or your sweetheart.
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Maturation of a Master filmmaker
What we have here is Director on the level of a Ford or Spielberg. This film is an American masterpiece that should be mandatory viewing by anyone who dreams of coming to America. Lee's America is the real America. The ' It's too late to turn back now' scene is pure gold. After seeing this, I went back and watched Lee's other films, and now they make sense to me. We should all sit back and leave him alone and let him do what he does best- tell the great American story.
