Playboy Video Playmate Calendar 1997 (1996)
Playboy vids are pretty lame
I bought this because I've always thought that Karin Taylor looked really good. Surprise, surprise, she looks pretty good in this video too. But, it's the standard Playboy fare - with some lame fantasy or awkward faux-candid shots going on. I'd only recommend this to big fans of whatever Playmate you liked from 1996. To me, Karin Taylor is one of the most beautiful women to appear in Playboy and I enjoyed her piece in the vid. But it's now collecting a lot of dust.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Underrated thriller
I had low expectations going into this one. The reviews in the NYC papers were near unanimous in giving it only two and a half stars. It was supposed to be a wild ride but ultimately empty.
What I got was maybe the best action movie I've ever seen. Maybe QT has raised expectations to the point where this simplified plot was not enough to please the critics. But dayamn this was a great action film. Best sustained fight scene I've ever seen. If these critics can praise the lameass Matrix series then how can you discount this one - which was much more intriguing and action-packed than either Matrix flick. Highly recommended. Can't wait for Pt. 2.
Swordfish (2001)
This was a bore
Totally predictable action suspense. Who finances these things? The only reason anyone I know went to see this was because Halle Berry went topless in a few scenes. If you're dying to see that, I'm sure there are some internet sites with the juicy stills. Don't bother renting this mess.
The Dark Backward (1991)
I've been slimed - and not in a good way
This film was such a mess I actually reimbursed my friends who I dragged to see it. The only reason I went to see it was that my friend was an apprentice editor on the shoot.
I'm sure that this film was meant to be campy, but the approach was so heavy-handed and self-reflexive it turned out really flat. Judd Nelson stars as an obsequious garbage man who is a hack comedian on the side. His life is hell and made worse by his obnoxious and overbearing companion Bill Paxton (who I feel embarrassed for - this was a really tasteless role for a talented actor). A freak accident alters Nelson's career course and mayhem ensues.
The attempts at humor were corny, predictable and often base and tasteless. Wayne Newton in the cast as a talent agent is a novelty but he adds nothing - comedically or otherwise.
Overall, it's a very weak and uncreative attempt at camp humor that goes over like a lead balloon. At least you could laugh AT Plan 9 From Outer Space. This one just makes you wonder who thought this was a good enough idea to finance and film. One of the all time worst bombs you'll ever witness.
3 A.M. (2001)
See it
Interesting slice of life from a young director. Saw this at Sundance and thought it looked and felt like a Spike Lee joint - he produced. Grier and Glover don't quite have the chemistry you'd hope for and some of the characters are a little shrill and bleak - but worth seeing anyway. I loved the bit part Melanie Torres had. I'd like to see more of her - vavavoom!
