Watching Ellie (2002)
Huh??
Yet another flop in the post Seinfeldian world of spin-offs. Why oh why was this show made? And the deal with the counter in the corner?? What was that?? The acting was so laid back it would send a coma patient into death throes. The absence of a laugh track, although very daring, cannot help this sitcom because we have zero idea when the funny parts were.
One small positive about the show was the silent homage to Julia Louise-Dreyfus' Seinfeld stint. The Cosmo Krameresque Super and the vet who is not a vet agreeing to take the super for a Cat Cat Scan is something I could see cooked up on Seinfeld, but at least done funnier. Save your Tuesday nights for something else funnier.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
"Damn Tim Burton!! Damn him to hell!!"
Remakes can sometimes be as good as the original from what I hear, but in this case, its just wrong! The movie wasn't a snoozefest because of the action (well most of the time its inaction) sequences, the comic wit of Paul Giamatta was well placed, and the little inside jokes made it a good enough work to make me wish there was more. Tim could have done so much more with this picture, but for some reason chose not to. At best, Marky Mark was a wooden actor. Total textbook anti-hero. The plot holes were big enough to drive a Mack truck through (If humans outnumber apes 4 to one, why were they winning? The ENDING? How a few hundred ape warriors get blasted by an afterburner rocket and none wind up to be extra tasty crispy? How all of a sudden Pericles KNOWS where the ship is and comes "just in time"?)The saving graces of this movie were superb performances by Tim Roth (general thade), Michael Clarke Duncan (general Attar), and Paul Giamatti (Limbo). I wish I was the guy who owned the local hydraulic catapult supply house for Hollyweird.
