The Car (1977)
Don't See This Film With MST3 Fans...
I think those who are slamming this film are missing the point. The dialog does tend to be dull, and the characters are often uninteresting, if not one-dimensional. There is no explanation for where the car came from, where it goes, and who or what it is.
Welcome to real life.
If you're looking for a well-thought-out story with highly-developed characters, and a movie where everything that happens is explained and wrapped up at the end, this is the wrong movie.
If you're looking for a movie that at times feels like a cross between a news report and a diary, this is the one.
The unpredictability of the car, the unexplainability of its actions, the normalcy of the people in the movie all make a rather unbelievable story, well... believable.
And I LOVED the ending. I wish they had made a "Car II: the devil takes Manhattan." :)
Blair Witch Project takes shaky camcorder scenes about a witch we never see and spends the entire show having the characters scream and cuss at each other. It is a hit.
The Car combines beautiful cinematography, a logical progression of events, and gets you involved trying to figure out how to stop this monster. It is ridiculed as "70s trash."
Rent this film, & you decide who is right!
Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal (2001)
Don't Let Bad Reviews Scare You Away!
(***PARTIAL SPOILER***)
O.K., so the lead's catch phrase, "let's do the hustle!" sounds pretty silly coming from a goth rocker painted up like the professional wrestler Sting. :) And I have friends in Kansas... it's not such a bad place.
But I liked this movie! It was fun romp!
#1 - I am very squemish when it comes to blood and guts. I expected massive, ripping gunshot wounds with people's brains sprayed everywhere. I expected to be hiding behind pillows. The violence in this movie, to my eyes, is P.G. Yes people get shot, but they are fairly realistic, minimally sized, minimally bleeding wounds, and you see them and the camera moves on... no slow-mo, extreme close-ups. So be prepared to not be grossed out. :)
#2 - The plot is interesting enough to make this more than an action movie (action is not my favorite style). Although the basic story reworks a tried-and-true disaster movie formula, especially at the end, it has enough twists and turns to not only keep me interested, but a few times leave me hanging on the edge of my seat!
This is good, campy fun. It has the good guys working with the bad guys, the good guys turning out to be the bad guys, the bad guys coming back for more, and the good guys doing heroic things.
As far as the production of the movie goes, I thought it was pretty well done, the script holds together, the cinematography tells the story well enough, and the one place where a blatent mistake is made my a character (a door left unlocked), you see later that it was needed for the "big finish."
It's on Cinemax in the month of March 2002... some late night, grab some friends and some popcorn and enjoy this entertaining story about a "death metal" (yeah right)performer's farewell concert a mile up the air... that almost becomes his last ANYTHING! It was certainly more believable and better produced than Snow Day! (Which is a fun movie but a horrible & completely unbelievable production.)
Duck Soup (1933)
The Soup's A Little Thin For Me
I enjoyed Duck Soup, no doubt about it. The feet in the lemonade stand made me laugh out loud, as did the ring and run doorbell scene, the multiple, Grouchos, the Groucho drawn on the vase, the people kicking their hind legs in the air in unison, the "he's not here / it's for you" routine, and several others.
Having said that...
The best comedy EVER? Wow, your sense of humor is different from mine. I know I laughed harder at almost all of the other Marx Bros movies. This one was the one I remembered as a disappointment as it tried so hard to lampoon musicals and instead generally just looked stupid doing so. Groucho's opening five or ten minutes were downright irritating to me and my wife, and she who had never seen the Marx Bros was surprised at how rarely she belly-laughed at the entire movie.
Others complained about the music in other MB movies... what about all the stupid parody songs in Duck Soup? They go on too long and they usually aren't very funny. I'd much rather hear Harpo show off than sit through another verse of "when the clock strikes 10." ...And if you're really looking for snort-milk-out-your-nose comedy, tried a much more recent film, of a play, called "Noises Off." Sometimes I have to stop the tape on this one, I'm laughing so hard. You might not enjoy it as much as I did, but Weekend At Bernie's also leaves me hurting for days. The Pink Panther movies have their moments, although like the Mark Bros they have "downtime" as well. For older movies, try some of the Abbott & Costello movies, especially Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein.
None of this suggests you shouldn't watch Marx Bros; you should. Nor am I saying you shouldn't watch Duck Soup; it has some excellent moments. Just don't write off the Marx Bros if it isn't The Funniest Movie You've Ever Seen... because I agree, and I think their other movies are better. Please see them before giving up on this talented team.
Radioland Murders (1994)
A Wonderful Romp Down Radio's Memory Lane
Radioland Murders is one I checked out on Pay Per View because of its connection to old-time radio. I've been in the business 10 years and loved and lived by it my entire life. Little did I know Radioland Murders would become one of my favorite movies of all time!
If you have an interest in the days of live radio theatre, you will enjoy this movie. We see behind the scenes how sound effects were made and a handful of talent were turned into numerous acts.
If you enjoy slapstick comedy, you will HOWL at this movie. Just check out some of the memorable quotes in the DataBase and you'll get the idea.
If you're into star cameos, you'll be shouting, "HEY, it's..." all the way through. George Burns, Rosemary Clooney, Bob Goldthwait, Billy Barty, Tracy Byrd, Harvey Korman, Joey Lawrence... the list goes on and on!
If you enjoy a good murder mystery and especially one with an interesting historical plot twist, you'll really like this one. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I didn't see the ending coming.
This movie starts off at a full run and never lets up. For laughs, memories, and even some great big band tunes, get this movie and see it. Heck, see it twice to catch all the gags you missed the first time. I can't imagine you being disappointed.
My hats off to all involved with the production! Having just started my own station I can assure you there is more fact than fiction in the antics on the screen! :) It is a funny, beautiful tribute to the career that keeps food on my table.
