Way Down (2021)
entertaining bank heist movie
The movie isn't perfect, but it is entertaining. The theme is similar to the Ocean's movies but without the unbelievable and annoyingly suave characters played by Clooney and Pitt, and that's what makes this movie better. It also has the feel of a Mission: Impossible movie but without the hi-tech gadgets. The college student at the center of the heist is neither annoying nor overly smart. The movie does not venture into friendships or romances and stays on track as the heist is planned. You'll be at the edge of your seat during the heist as they run out of time.
Stowaway (2021)
good start then all downhill
The movie looked promising until the stowaway was found. It was downhill from there. I don't enough to comment on the ethics of what to do with an passenger, but I think the mission would be the most important thing on everyone's mind. I particularly dislike movies with bleeding hearts, and the doctor was willing to risk everyone and everything for the stowaway despite the low probability of success.
One technical aspect of the movie that seemed wrong was how they traversed the tether to the LOX tank without a safety tether. It seems too risky to be out there among the rotational forces without a safety rope.
Another technical aspect that seemed very wrong was how they tapped into the high pressure LOX pipe with a tool that punctured the pipe. This seems very risky and dangerous with such a high pressure. For what practical reason did they just happen to have such a tool?
Next, I don't know how they ascertained the amount of LOX in the tank by its pressure.
Finally, the doctor's uncontrolled return to the MTS was just sloppy. I understand a deadly storm is approaching, but it was a major effort to get the LOX, and she had time to return.
After writing all of this I lowered my rating to from 3 stars to 2 stars.
The Wedding Guest (2018)
low key thriller
The movie was surprisingly good. Critics will surely point out all of the holes and gaps. It's not a blood curdling thriller but a low key "what will happen next" kind of plot. It starts out as a thriller but changes into a statement about living one's own life. The story progressed at a good pace, and the roles were well played.
Outside the Wire (2021)
snoozer
Don't waste your time on this movie. The story had potential, but the execution failed miserably.
The acting was stiff. Both Mackie and Idris did not fulfill their roles. Idris was a total disaster. Both should quit acting and sell popcorn.
The script didn't deliver the story well.
Instead of looking forward to the next scene you'll be struggling to stay awake.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
movie fails to deliver a message
The movie is listed in the sci-fi genre but has very little to do with it. It's a drama about a man's regret for ignoring his family. The only sci-fi is the story around a spaceship returning from Jupiter. The story could easily be rewritten with a sea vessel or other terrestrial vehicle.
Skip this movie. Many other movies have been written with similar themes that deliver the emotions in ways that can be felt.
Invasion Planet Earth (2019)
very bad movie
I got as far as the Walking Dead zombie scene and then quit. Acting, script, graphics, story, etc. were abysmal.
The Titan (2018)
good theme but too many disjointed scenes
This movie reminds me of an old Outer Limits episode. I don't remember the details but a man was being sent to another planet, and he underwent treatment to be transformed for that environment. If I remember correctly, his body was being adapted to nitrogen instead of oxygen. His wife saw his transformation over time, and his physical appearance changed significantly, but she knew he was in there because he made a signature gesture of their affection which she recognized.
This movie was good until the end when an operation completed the transformation and changed their appearances from human to evolved humans. It wasn't clear why the operations were needed nor was it explained to what extent they would change.
MindGamers (2015)
believe the 1 star reviews
I have to warn other hopeful viewers to avoid this movie. Like the other 1 star reviews stated, this movie is incoherent and very poor in execution of the theme. It attempted to be artsy and failed to deliver the basic elements of a good movie. After 90 minutes you will wonder what you just watched and wish you could delete it from Netflix, so that no one else suffers.
