The Odd Couple (2015)
They don't get it
Thomas Lennon showed up for work on this one. He pretty much has the Felix role down. I cant say the same for anyone else, including the writers & producers. They seem to have forgotten the things that made the original great. Both the movie & TV series had one thing this doesn't... Both the city & the time period were vital characters in both originals. They didn't adapt well to the new version. They also changed all the supporting characters drastically without good reason. As if this weren't bad enough... Matthew Perry just cannot seem to get any of the essence of this character. Sad because I really enjoyed the early part of his career. I don't see how they could POSSIBLY salvage this show. Too many issues to fix. The apartment that would cost many millions of dollars The emotional issues of Oscar The failure to sell this Oscar as a proper slob or real grouch The failure to utilize supporting characters correctly The complete lack of a real comedic plot What city are they supposed to be in? This looks more like "the Exes" without the extra characters Too mild
The Hatchet Man (1932)
A true classic that needs to be preserved on DVD
Yes as many have stated, by today's standards, the casting of this movie seems ridiculous, but please keep in mind the time period that this movie was made. All things considered, even with the period specific "whites for ethnic minorities" casting mentality, respect for a certain amount of cultural authenticity was in this movie to a greater degree than in previous films of this era, and so I feel that in that respect this movie was ground breaking and helped slowly pave the way for minorities to eventually take center stage in great theatrical releases. Most other films before and since (until the late 70's early 80's) stereotyped Asian characters as clownish and comical to an absolutely racist degree. Not so here. Robinson (although he did use some stereotyping) created a character who was not only mysterious, but both an anti-hero as well as deep & complex the likes of which would not be seen for a great long time after. His acting ability was amazing and truly well showcased here. He was able to show what really made his characters great and not just the mugging gangster stereotype that became so exaggerated over time. Often people forget what a true talent Robinson was, and if you need to know why... See this one if you ever get the chance!!!
Frankenstein (1910)
This does exist on DVD
I went to a Chiller Theatre convention a few years back, and lo and behold there was the owner of the original Edison print!! He was selling DVD copies (which also contains a print of Nosferatu) along with books on the subject. He even let me hold the actual film reel!!! I am not quite sure why it is not listed as an available DVD on IMDb, but it is obtainable (although I would not know how to get another copy) Don't give up hope on finding it though. Interesting to watch, there was a focus on attempting special effects (obviously effects had never been tried before) Very educational to see one of the earliest films! This is only about 15 minutes long but a good flick.
Rootie Kazootie (1952)
A true classic that needs to be preserved on DVD
My mother used to annoy me by crooning the Rootie Kazootie song (she was never a smooth singer) but it stuck with me and over the years, bits and pieces of Rootie Kazootie history floated slowly into my consciousness. I feel that all the original TV shows from the 50's both good & bad should be preserved as these were an important hallmark of history. These were some of the first televised images ever seen and would probably have the same impact as discovering life on other worlds to some. We take it for granted now, but TV was revolutionary in the 50's. It was a HUGE leap forward from the telephone. It truly saddens me that so many of these shows are lost due to poor preservation at the time, but even sadder is the lack of interest in corporations to try to market & preserve our rich history because they feel so much falls short of todays standards in entertainment or general lack of interest. I for one feel a great sense of personal loss.
Move Over, Darling (1963)
Great mid-century classic
This movie epitomizes the blind optimism of the mid-century era. Its one of the perfect movies for Vintage and Mid-Century collectors. This is a remake of the uncompleted Marilyn Monroe/Dean Martin version (which is available in its
incomplete form in the Marilyn Monroe Diamond Collection) The Monroe
version wasn't finished because she died during filming after many on set
problems, it was slated to be finished ans just before filming she died! Having seen the monroe version and this as well, I have to say both are great in their own ways, the shots are almost identical, the dialogue as well, but casting
makes all the difference! The Day/Garner version has a much more wholesome/ happy vibe to it that for me is the hallmark of movies of the Mid-century era. You half expect to hear someone say "golly gee willikers"! or something corny like that. Doris Day delivers a performance that only Day can and Garner is the
unsung hero of this kind of genre movie, he had great comic timing, he was
dashing and personable without ever coming off as too sleazy or smarmy. I
really ache to see this one on DVD, especially if they are kind enough to include some fantastic extras!!!
