The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
A movie about being rotten by the very life you're living
First of, this movie is a superb combination of cinematography, fantastic acting performances, a very wild sense of storytelling and inevitability of conflicts in human lives.
An aging musician in a small Irisih village, realises his life is ending without meaning, purpose or drive, and he tries to put blame on his clueless, gullible life long friend who basically adores their friendship and reacts poorly to the shifting reality.
Colm appears to be harsh and very uptight snob at first. But with time, it's quite clear that he's been dealing with Podraic's gullible nature, he's being Podraic's friend for Podraic's own benefit. Podraic is an ignorant villager, who really doesn't accept Colm's new decision. He feels abandoned and discarded, and no matter how clear he's been warned about the situation, he's just trying to lure Colm into conversing with him.
But, even though there are other folk than Colm, only person who's getting along with Podraic is the village idiot, Dominic. Whom Podraic doesn't particularly like either.
And with this ridicilous cause, the two literally destroy each other's lives. Just like Ireland, with a meaningless squabble starting a never ending disdain, Colm and Podraic, just are making eachother perpetually miserable.
Sari Mercedes (1992)
A heartbreaking story about a man reduced himself to his ownership of a car
Bayram is the embodiment of rural Inner Anatolian Turk. He's an orphan of an undeveloped village, has no education, no job, no skill, he's been mocked and bullied his entire life, never felt respected, never felt content.
But he managed to join Gastarbeiter program and went to Germany, like so many rural people of Turkey. He works as a street cleaner, doesn't spend a dime if he isn't compelled to, saved all his money and bought a yellow coloured Mercedes saloon, thinking himself now a man of virtue, hard work and success. He drives back to his village, intending to show off with his only significant possession, his identity, Yellow Mercedes.
Only to realise he's losing everything, bit by bit, we see what sort of a man he is, hos pathetic he is, but the pity, slowly turns into disdain as the movie unfolds the true personality of Bayram.
Oppressed people don't just become victims. Oppressed people become heartless, cruel and treacherous.
