The Spanish Princess (2019–2020)
7/10
Quite enjoyable, but don't base your history paper on it.

Lavishly produced, very well acted and generally quite entertaining, but I did think the Spanish Princess drifted into soap opera a little too often. Massive liberties taken with history, but we should all know by now that any show "based on historical events" is just that - most of the people existed, some of the things happened, but most of it is pure fiction. Still, I often find these kinds of shows interesting because they lure me into checking the historical facts, which is educational. I was surprised to find, for instance, that Catherine actually did have a black woman as one of her retinue of 'ladies'.

Never dull, always intelligent, totally thought provoking
16 October 2020
I kind of expected a propaganda piece - either pro or anti America - but Baghdad Central isn't like that at all. This is a really thought-provoking series with great characters and great performances. There are plenty of good guys and bad guys but there are mainly people either just trying to survive or just doing their job as best they can in a bad and unfamiliar situation. The lead character is exceptionally well drawn and beautifully played by Waleed Zuaiter - great actor. Maybe I like this so much because I came in with fairly low expectations, but I don't think so. I think this is genuinely one of the best pieces of TV produced this year.

War of the Worlds (2019– )
Slow and often very silly
8 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another War of the Worlds attempt, yet another failure. The old Gene Barry version is still the best made. This one is soo slow, with endless scenes of people walking or just looking into space. But it was the silliness that I hated most. How is it that an old lady and a kid can shoot and 'kill' one of these odd robot dog things, yet the highly trained French SAS soldiers with their high powered weapons get wiped out without ever taking one down - no matter how many shots they fire? How is it these things are everywhere our survivors are? There must be millions of these things spread across France and England for this to be happening. Why does the French SAS commander go along with the French astonomer's foolish search for her sister when everyone everywhere is dead (getting half his squad killed along the way)? How do they get up and down the mountain so fast when all the cars couldn't make it? Why does the French astronomer only decide to bring out her technology thing only after the alien robot things attack in numbers, getting even more SAS members killed? And then of course there is the deep and meaningful personal stories, which always leads people to do silly things. And my pet peeve in so many sci fi movies and series - we have most of the planet wiped out by an unseen alien force, strange alien robot things are roaming the streets...but when a character says they are hearing things or seeing when they have been blind, people just say, oh, you're just imagining it. I put up with all eight episodes wanting to see if they came up with a different variation on the classic ending...and then I find it's 'to be continued', Uggh!
