Hulk (2003)
Me angry...Me VERY angry....AT MOVIE!!! ARRRGH!!!
Let me begin by I was hoping The Hulk would be a very cool movie about holding up your rage and just letting it out because the whole world is becoming a very hard place.
Um, I guess when your expectations are turned differently it can be a good thing, but honestly... What the heck happened with this movie?!?
***Spoiler-time: Read if you seen, read if you want to be warned and convinced to save yourself 5-10 dollars...free of charge!***
But I was confused of what Bruce was so angry about... When he first turned into Hulk, he was really angered by a dog about to bite him.... ABOUT to bite him. Now I'm no hot-head, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get p***ed off and go rampaging across the city.
Anyway, enough about talking about the story (wait, there was a story!?)
I know this isn't just me, my friend right next to me fell asleep off and on in the movie, he woke up when the action sequences came in and fell asleep right after they ended. I ALSO notice this movie doesn't use music very well at all... Maybe a total of 6 orchestrated songs for the movie?
The CGI however, I will say that they did a pretty good job with making the guy look like Bruce... But does no one realize that they went a little HEAVY on the transitions!? I read an article and they said they used about every single transition style that is possible in one movie. I hope everyone understands the concepts of why transitions are used... most are to show a time difference, but these were used almost in every cut! Sure they must have planned it well, but who cares about transitions when you can't understand what's going on in the movie in the first place?
And about the debatable "comic book look" to the movie. The multi-camera angle thing CAN be seen as a more free way of expressing the movie, because after all you get to see everything in a different way. But why would anyone pay 8 dollars to go see a movie that LOOKS like a comic book? The guy dying in the explosion was just a terrible way of making a guy die... A white outline of him and fading into the explosion, then zoom out.
My opinion on the multi-camera angle concept, it IS a new way of showing a movie... no doubt... But it totally ruins the concept of a "drama" feel when you're trying to make something serious... because why on Earth do we want to see 3 people's emotions when we can't even understand ONE person's emotions? (besides HULK MAD! HULK SMASH!)
The plot took a very long time to get up to pace, about 40 minutes into the movie we finally see The Hulk come into action... Whereas X-Men took a solid what, 10 minutes tops? Spider-man took about 20 minutes, but at least we are shown a love interest development and comedy relief, which does tend to flow better than confusing drama for 40 minutes...
As for the villain...Um, where is he?! Oh the father? Didn't know, but why did it take so long for him to show up with the Hulk?
Honestly, the time length of the movie.. Can be SERIOUSLY dropped down another HOUR.
I'm sure ANYONE can come up with something better to fight, I mean... dogs?! All right...t...that's nice...
And can someone please tell me... WHY the movie didn't explain why he turned green when he got angry... No, they explain how he GOT that power... But why on Earth does he turn into a massive creature? Are we just supposed to assume he turns into a big thing or what?! You understand why Spider-Man can shoot webbing because he was bit by a spider, that's what spiders do... But what kind of creature turns into a big green muscle monster?!?!??
Oh wait that's right, the movie didn't say... Heh, there's a lot of missing elements aren't there? I haven't seen many movies with plotholes like... in a very long time (The Musketeer movie) but this one just tops that movie right off and certainly brings blockbuster movie making to a whole new level... A level covered with confusion, disappointment and utter ANGER at the movie.
Hulk: -1/10
(P.S. - To the producers of Hulk, never make a movie again)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
This is how films should be.
I honestly have not seen a better story that has come out this year than the Two Towers. From the opening CG shot in the mountain to the simple golem character, the special effects will definately win the oscar this year. Forget Star Wars, this is the best computer animation I have ever seen in a movie. Finally Hollywood is getting it right by not going into a cartoon look.
So anyway, the very beginning of the movie left me in complete awe. There is no better way to get attention than that. Elijah Wood is truly becoming an awesome actor and so is the character who plays Sam. With the way the story worked, you will not see a better film than this people. And yes, I am also one who thought Shakespeare In Love should NOT HAVE WON the oscar. Saw Braveheart, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Forest Gump, Shawshank, etc... All the ground-breaking movies (By the way, Shawshank should have beat Forest Gump... bah, we all know that).
With an awesome run time of 3 hours long, you will not be displeased. Awesome action sequences that looked like they had to take FOREVER to make... Brilliant cinematography (it'll win that too)... Set design, costumes, best script adapted from novel, best music, best sound & sound editing, best visual effects... It's going to blow away the Oscars.
Go see it, buy a ticket now... If you have to steal one, do it!
Best movie of the year - 11 out of 10 :)
Signs (2002)
Another horror movie -- but this one's good... best picture good.
I saw this the other night and M. Night Shyamalan has out done himself this time. He's becoming Alfred Hitchcock - but of the 21st century.
Mel Gibson does one thing that most actors do not have the ability of... he becomes the character in the movie. For once it's fun to actually see an actor just fall into his part so you can just enjoy the movie and not worry about cheesy cliches. Luckily, none of those exist in this movie. The director definitely does deserve recognition for his part on making the movie since everything just seems natural, not fake acting, just stuff that you'd say "now that's how I'd do it."
Now for beyond the acting. I can honestly say that no movie this year will deserve Best Sound, other than Signs. And I really do like movies that use original sounds, rather than some sounds that make you go "that's a cartoon sound!". Nonetheless, the script deserves recognition, the cinematography just hungers for an award and the music just begs for it. Instead of seeing boring dead people in the Sixth Sense, go see Shyamalan's awesome new flick: Signs ****/**** stars
Gladiadores del siglo XX (1969)
What the hell!?
What kind of a movie is this?! You call this entertainment? I hated it whenever the zombies attacked the policeman for 70 minutes. I think that giving it a G-rating was just crazy. THEY SHOWED A LIVING HUMAN HEART! I give it my highest rating....5/5 stars.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Best Story Ever
The thing that makes Lord of the Rings so great, is all the elements that came into play in the movie. I didn't even read the book and I think it's the greatest movie I've seen to this day; visual effects, sound, music, art design, costume design, direction, acting and screenplay were all top notch. There's very little wrong with this movie, it should have been pushed to an R rating so there could be more done. Lord of the Rings - 5/5
Rat Race (2001)
A major uplift from a lot of disappointing movies this year.
This movie's great!
I don't think it matters whoever you are, but this movie has any kind of comedy I think. There are so many instances where the comedy is linked like none other and some of it is just nonsense but awesome!
Most movies with a bunch of big name actors turn out like crap...most of the time (Pearl Harbor). But this movie had lots of stuff destroyed, a bunch of great ideas, and a huge cast of awesome actors.
Definately one of my highest fav's this summer, since this is the only review I would write.
9/10
