The Twilight Zone: Nightmare as a Child (1960)
The scariest Twilight Zone episode, a suspense story and NOT a mystery.
I've seen just about every episode of the Twilight Zone, and I can say with relative confidence that this one scared me the most (and still does). Yes, it's pretty obvious what's really going on by the time it's revealed but people who say this is a detriment to the story misunderstand that this is really a suspense story not a mystery. The main source of anxiety on the viewer's part is the question of "when will Helen figure it out? Will it be in time?" The moment of realization for Helen is paired with the scariest cut in Twilight Zone history (in my opinion). The acting is really great and the casting was perfect.
The Killing (1956)
One of the least gratifying or engaging movies I've ever seen
I do not dislike Kubrick, in fact I love many of his other films (Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove are some of my favorite movies period) nor do I dislike noir/crime/thriller movies (I love Laura, Double Indemnity, and Strangers on a Train) but this movie was thoroughly, start-to-finish miserable. There is not a single likeable or even amusing character or scene to be found, I didn't care one bit whether they would pull of the heist, it felt like a sloppy TV episode but twice as long. The fight scene at the bar was ridiculous and borderline comedic. I ended the movie thinking "who on earth would see this and recommend it to other people?"
