Zhi fen shuang xiong (1990)
A unique martial arts movie
This Sammo Hung action-comedy is often cited as his most politically incorrect film, along with the more recent flick 'Don't Give a Damn'. This is a fair assessment, although this minor classic of Hong Kong cinema should not be dismissed for this reason.
The story involves the search for a serial killer of gay men; crude and often amusing jokes come thick and fast as Hung and cop partner Alan Tam go undercover as homosexuals. Thankfully, the movie never truly degenerates into homophobia, and remains fairly agreeable throughout.
The fight scenes, as choreographed by Sammo himself, are mostly on the short side but masterfully performed and extremely powerful. However, the violence in the film is graphic and occasionally shocking- so be warned.
Overall, if you can stomach the heady mix of controversial comedy and hard-hitting action, you'll have a rollicking time.
Hong fu qi tian (1991)
Not as good as it should be
Sammo Hung stars as three characters in this martial arts comedy, with Mang Hoi in a supporting role as the long-suffering friend of one of the incarnations of the portly kicker. Unfortunately, this film is nowhere near as funny as it often thinks it is, and generally fails to ignite a spark of interest in the audience. So many superb actors are criminally underused, such as Lam Ching-Ying, Richard Ng, and Billy Chow. The comedy is broad (as is expected) yet is often tiresome, and the fights are rare and of lower quality than we have come to expect from the legendary Sammo (bar a few moments in the final reel). Only Wu Ma's performance as a crazy swordsman remains in the memory. If you are not anticipating a kung-fu fest but are desperate for a Sammo Hung movie, then you might as well give this a go.
Mi ni te gong dui (1983)
Do not buy this film!
Utterly terrible waste of time and money. Jackie looks embarrassed and Wang-Yu looks like he is finally having second thoughts about making this movie by the finale. Completely pointless; there is no plot whatsoever (unless you count WW2 soldiers, Nazis, Amazons, zombies, vampires as making sense put together).
Jackie has about three fights in it: number 1, some kind of stupid wrestling match; number 2, JC beats up girls with paper bags over their heads; and number 3, a sloppy throwdown with Jimmy. If any of these sound enticing, well, I'm sorry to say they are not even as good as Police Woman (and that, my friends, is saying something).
