Sasquatch Sunset (2024)
The Social Network redacted
This prequel/side story to the stellar Social Network charts Zuckenbergs distant cousins life in America's Pacific Northwest. The genius casting move to have Jesse Eisenburg play the Facebook auteurs Sasquatch "bruva from another muvva" is perfectly realized. We witness all the social complexities that the majority of us devour each day as we're scrolling on these strange new appendages, only in a primal part of this new movie universe. With a cast of just 4,000,000,000 minus 3,999,999,996. The eclectic soundtrack is pitch perfect, peaking in a remarkable scene when our protagonists discover "I Love to Hate you" by Erasure. It may not get the "Likes" it deserves, but the lives of Bigfoot never looked so Meta.
Challengers (2024)
A lot of hype over not much
I only went to see this on the advice of my 18 year old daughter ( who normally has excellent taste for her age ). However I really wish I'd spent the afternoon differently. While it's by no means a poorly made movie, it lacked any heart and soul. I like a movie to move me, either for the good or the bad. This didn't do either.
The two male leads were ok, but Zendaya was not the right choice. Only when she was playing her younger self did she convince. Trying to play someone aged around 30 was a fail. It felt like it had so much potential, but ultimately didn't know what it was meant to be. By the end I had no vested interest in any of the three leads, and despite the final 10 minutes being well shot, with frenetic music raising the stakes, the previous 120 minutes were not interesting enough to justify it's finale.
