The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Positively Frightful

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is arguably a cult classic that has been delighting and horrifying audiences for over forty years. The film, which was released in the year 1975 and lasts for one hour and thirty-eight minutes can presently be viewed on Amazon Prime. The Rocky Horror Picture show play tells the story of a young couple, named Brad and Janet, who accidentally stumbled into a strangle and bizarre situation. Brad and Janet encounter an eerie mansion owned by the oddly fascinating Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his eccentric group of cult-like friends. In general, the production is a very lively, nonsensical thriller that combines features that one could expect in a horror, science fiction or musical theater production. In critique, while the Rocky Horror Picture Show, offers a timeless message about inclusivity, an in depth analysis of the play's acting, directing, and design reveals noteworthy flaws.
To begin, arguments can be made that the acting in the Rocky Horror Picture Show is varied in performance value. For example, some actors, such as Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, are a big thumbs up. Tim Curry offers an acting performance which is outstanding. In playing an arguable antagonist, Tim Curry's acting was positively horrifying in a mannerism that made me not want to stop looking. I believe that it can be argued that Tim Curry offers the viewers an imminent sense of danger and sensuality to the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. On the other hand, the acting of actors such as Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon could be given a thumbs down. As Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon acted as Brad and Janet, respectively, their portrayals were less then convincing. Arguably, the two actors often came up short on portraying intense emotions. As a viewer, this made it difficult to connect with either character.
To continue, the directing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which was by Jim Sharman, incorporated a unique vision portraying a cultist relevant story. Based upon the eye catching, and intriguing visualization that were colorful and matched the film's wild characters, it can be argued that Jim Sharman was not afraid to take risks. However, while some of Jim Sharman's risks paid off, others led to incoherence in storytelling. Some of the over-the-top props and especially lighting effects contributed to be distractions rather than contributors in the storying telling.
Furthermore, the production design of The Rocky Horror Picture Show contributed strengths and drawbacks towards the film. For example, in terms of production design, strengths can be seen in the form of costumes design and set pieces. The film's main designers consisted of many individuals including Arsenault and Wilson Chin on set design, Nicole V. Moody on costume design, and Travis McHale on lighting design. Arguably, the Rocky Horror Picture show offered viewers historically iconic costume and set designs. In more detail, costumes consisted of corsets, fishnet stockings, and leather jackets that are still unforgettable more than forty years after the film was released. To continue, the design consists of gothic themes sets and lighting design which worked to create a unique and positively strange emotional feeling for viewers. Yet, in critique, it would be vital to point out that some design elements could be considered out-dated. For modern viewers, the film portrays a feeling that is very rooted into the 1970s culture. This could make it difficult for younger, more modern audiences to connect with the film.
Overall, to provide a general reaction to this film in further detail, I believe that it is worth noting a few specific historic scenes. In the scene which entailed that famous performance of "Sweet Transvestite," Dr. Frank-N-Furter offers viewers an unforgettable grand entrance. This scene was pivotal in demonstrating the strengths of the entire film. Not only did this scene entail the strong performance of Tim Curry, but also incorporated memorizing design elements including set design and costumes, as well as powerful choreography. All-in-all, despite flaws including pacing, the acting of Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon, and a few over-the-top design elements, this film is a thumbs up. The Rocky Horror Picture Show offers views a positively frightful viewing experience.
