Manna from Heaven (2002)
Fantastic movie...just a little long.
I really enjoyed this movie about a family lucky enough to receive a gift from God, in the form of a lot of cash! The money helps secure their futures. Then they are told they must give it back. The ensuing story is both inspiring and hilarious, with fantastic acting all around. The only gripe I have with this film is that it just goes on way too long, there are scenes that could be cut with no effect to the story at all, other than to tighten the story. Even with these problems, the film is a must-see.
The Deep End (2001)
Not your Typical homophobic garbage.
I recently saw "The Deep End" when it was presented at the Stony Brook Film Festival on Long Island, and if you stay for longer than ten minutes it soon becomes obvious that the subplot about the "sexual predator" is only a Hitchcockian "Macguffin". The movie actually deals with the suffering of a frustrated mother to protect her family from blackmail by gangsters. It also shows a deep connection between the mother and her son, whom she finds out is gay in the run of the story. She accepts him immediately and their bond grows stronger as the movie progresses. A very powerful movie with many deep issues. Also great for lovers of Hitchcock.
