Mamma Mia! (2008)
This winner takes it all!
As soon as I saw the trailer in theatres for the first time, I immediately knew I had to go see this! And, I'm glad I did! The movie started off great! There were lovely plot twists here and there. Throughout the film, I kept thinking - "Which one is her real father?!" Then, there were the songs. What great songs! ABBA made hits way before I was born and I'm familiar with some of their songs. After seeing this movie, I wanted to go and listen to the band's other songs.
Not only did the film make me interested in ABBA, it also made me want to take a trip to Greece. The scenery was lovely! With the exception of the mother-daughter bonding scene (which got me teary), I had a smile on my face throughout the entire film! My family and I sang along and laughed out loud! 10/10 because I left the theatre with a light-hearted feeling and a big smile on my face! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to some ABBA songs!
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)
If you want a tug on your heartstrings too, go see this one!
Well, it's not the number one movie to go to if you want a tug at your heartstrings but it has enough moments to do that.
Originally, I wasn't going to see the film. It seemed like a fantasy-action-adventure type of film and though I really enjoyed the Harry Potter and Narnia films, I didn't think I'd enjoy this one. It seemed so "kiddie" to me at first and I really wasn't going to see it. However, I changed my mind and decided to see it anyways and it wasn't at all what I expected.
The film had a lot of action scenes (along with the fantasy) that kept me on the edge of my seat, surprisingly. Looking back after seeing the film, I don't remember feeling bored at all. The Spiderwick Chronicles isn't just about fighting off computer-generated monsters, there was also a lot of heart in the film too.
The acting was wonderful. I've got to say that Freddie Highmore was phenomenal! That kid blows my mind! He never ceases to amaze me! There's not one movie I watched with him in it that didn't make me well up because he always seem to well up at the right moments in the film. He makes me want to jump into the screen and give him a hug but of course, I can't do that so I just sit in my seat, go "Aww..." and hope I don't start crying.
I also know he's British so hearing him have an American accent amazed me. I actually waited for him to slip but halfway through the film, I forgot to listen for mistakes and just started really enjoying the movie.
When the movie was over, it still sort of stayed in my system. I was still pretty choked up even though the ending was light and very happy as almost every kid's movie is. It's more than a fantasy film. It's a warm family movie too and on those days when I'd like to watch something that has a lot of fantasy and action yet tugs on my heartstrings, I'd go see this one.
9/10 because surprisingly, I really enjoyed it!
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
Definitely not as magical as the first but still enjoyable!
WARNING: LOTS OF SPOILERS in my review! Skip it if you don't want the movie spoiled for you.
Here goes: First and foremost, I thought this film lacked the magic of the first. The first one had this magical Christmas-y feel to it I could keep watching it on DVD without getting tired of it.
Prince Caspian started out okay but I found myself hoping the Pevensies would show up on screen soon and when they did, I felt a smile creep up my face. Some things weren't explained well. I often found myself explaining some scenes to my friends and my family, whom I watched with, because none of them read the book. But then, I didn't read the book thoroughly either.
The new film was alright. I thought the battle sequences were really cool (from the view point of a person who does not know much about war tactics and strategy). I thought the use of some of the old score was great! It made the Prince Caspian feel more connected to the first movie.
The special effects weren't as good as the first one, or at least, I think so. The animated creatures seemed more "animated" than "real". Reepicheep reminded me of Puss-in-Boots in the Shrek movies. The audience in my theatre found the mouse endearing though.
I read that some scenes like the Night Raid was added into the film (not part of the book) but I thought that added scene was great and the ending of that scene was wonderfully acted by William Moseley.
It was certainly nice to see all the actors mature - looks-wise and personality-wise, especially Georgie Henley (who plays Lucy).
There was a lot of humor in this film, compared to the first one. I definitely loved that.
Two things that kept going through my mind though were: (1) I never thought I'd want to cry during a Narnia movie. First the end of the Night Raid scene. Then, the ending - with that song, The Call by Regina Spektor. It was strange having a song like that in a film that took you to another world but I fell in love with the song. The ending left me sad though. I tried to laugh when Edmund said he left his new torch in Narnia but my laugh seemed forced. I didn't have the light, happy feeling I got after seeing the first film but that didn't bother me so much.
What bothered me more was that (2) Skandar Keynes (who plays Edmund Pevensie) was underused! I thought he could do more than just be in the background and have a few lines. I noticed that the other kids got a fair share of close-ups except for him. There was one scene - when the kids approached the Stone Table. Each Pevensie got a close-up. Then, when Edmund's character was about to get one then the camera panned away immediately. Edmund is my favorite character in LWW and I always wanted to see more of him. I'd have to say though. His scenes were the most memorable for me. There's something about him (and I can't explain what or why) that makes me notice him over the others when he's on-screen.
Over-all, I thought this movie was good. Not as breathtaking at first but still great all the same. I must've liked it so much since I watched it twice and I still want to go see it a third time. So, I gave it an 8/10!
10,000 BC (2008)
Entertaining!
Seriously, I was surprised to see that a lot of people hated the film. Maybe we all just have different tastes. I don't think the movie was THAT awful. I actually enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting much from the film.
It was entertaining. I don't care if it didn't stay true to historical facts or if some things happened in the film that couldn't possibly happen in real life. It's a movie, made to entertain, not to inform.
My friends and I laughed, gasped and had smiles on our faces at the end of the film. It was a Friday night and we all watched it to unwind from all the school-related stress. A lot of people in the theatre seemed satisfied too so I think it was an okay flick.
Sure there are other great movies showing simultaneously. I guess this one not worthy of any kind of award, probably (seeing how much people didn't like it). But it's not a waste of money for me because it did what movies are supposed to do and that's to entertain.
If you look past all the jumbled historical facts and so on, you'll realize that it's just trying to tell a story and well, it did just that. I like this film.
But then, that's just me.
Enchanted (2007)
Echantingly different kind of romantic comedy!
***I'm not sure if there's a spoiler in this...but I'll put up a warning JUST IN CASE!***
As I was a little girl, I was content with watching my Disney favorite princesses meet the man of their dreams. Now that I am a teenager, I often found myself watching "real" movies. It seems as though animated features weren't for me anymore. But what do you know? Disney came up with something "real" and animated, satisfying my thirst for seeing a princess reach her dreams once again...in a very different way.
Enter 'Enchanted'. It has Disney trademarks - the characters suddenly breaking into song and dance number in many scenes, the songs every viewer will learn to cherish and the sappy love scenes and happy endings that leave us feeling good.
So, what's different about it? For one, two different worlds collide (literally!) Then, there's less of the drama and more of the comedy, spoofing a lot of our beloved fairy tales, without making us hate them for it!
Amy Adams was awesome as Giselle, the "lost" princess. as pointed out by a user on this site, not many actresses can pull off playing a princess, acting "stupid" in the middle of New York City. She has a lovely voice too!
Patrick Dempsey played Robert Philipp's part well too. Robert is a lawyer with a little daughter, Morgan (played by adorable Rachel Covey). I do not watch 'Grey's Anatomy' but Patrick Dempsey's name was the first familiar name I heard when I looked up the film. That is, until I learned James Marsden was going to be in it.
This man is hilarious! James Marsden played Prince Edward's role to perfection. Most of the one-liners I remember from the movie are his! He makes me crack up in every scene he's in. Despite his antics and silly comebacks, everyone finds themselves loving this egotistic prince charming. James Marsden charmed his way through this movie (and possibly into the hearts of every fan!)
If you're looking for a different kind of romantic comedy that the young and the young at heart would love, then 'Enchanted' is the right film for you. Go see it with your siblings, your kids, even your parents and grandparents. I saw it with my friends and we still laughed about the film even after we've seen it. And if you've already watched it then, you probably get what I mean. No wonder it's such a hit in the box office!
Thanks for making such a great film, peasants (Disney)! *wink*
Ghost Whisperer (2005)
Horrifyingly captivating
This TV series is about Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt), who has a special gift and she uses that gift to help make a difference in the lives of both the living and the dead.
I don't usually watch frightening shows or movies. I try to avoid them as much as possible but not this show. It's more of drama with a few twists and surprises here and there and that's why I like it. Each episode carries important lessons for all of us. Each story leaves a mark and touches me in a way. It makes me see things in a different light. There are always many angles, many sides to a story.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is amazing as Melinda Gordon and she has an amazing supporting cast as well. It's quite easy to fall in love with all the characters - even the ghostly ones in every episode.
In a world where TV shows with substance and huge talents are hard to find, Ghost Whisperer is refreshing to see. It's all there - a substantial plot and great actors. Each episode provides satisfaction to the viewers.
Another thing I love about this show is that it (almost) always has happy endings or at least the episodes I've seen.
I can't wait for Season 3. I heard it's going to be great. It just gets better and better with every episode.
9 stars to show how much I love it!
14 Hours (2005)
It's okay
Actually, I didn't watch the WHOLE movie. I watched some parts, changed the channel, changed back and watched it again, changed the channel once more but when I changed back and saw the part where the flood had cut off the back-up generators of the hospital, from there, I kept watching. Even if I somewhat knew that in the end of the whole movie, everyone would sort of "live happily ever after", something about the film kept me glued to the screen. SPOILERS! One scene that made me smile was when the "National Guard" came in their helicopter to save those adorable little babies! I don't know why but that scene really struck me! Maybe because I had this image of these tough guys handling fragile little beings and then there was that background music and I actually giggled! I do not live in Houston, nor do I live anywhere near it. I actually had no idea that a storm badly hit that area. It wasn't a really bad movie. There are lessons to learn. It showed that indeed, when disaster strikes, you'll see that a lot of people actually care and want to make a difference. What would be great is if even without these disasters, you'll lend a hand, you'll still care about others. That really matters!
Judging Amy (1999)
Great Show!
This show is about a judge, her life as a daughter, wife and lover and the lives of the people whom she loves. I am drawn each time I watch an episode. Each character, each storyline was compelling. There were so many values about family, work, siblings and dealing with issues so many people young and old experience today. I think I can relate to some. It just makes me drop the remote control, sit and watch. That's why when I learned that this show was canceled, I was shocked. How could they cancel such a great show? I just had to place a comment here. I had just watched one episode before typing this. Maybe it didn't appeal to the target audience as I've read somewhere that this show was targeted to much older women. My little sister and I, (we are both under the age of 18 years) love the show a lot. It was aired late over where we live so we still get to see "new" episodes but then, that's it. When all the seasons are done, there would be nothing new to look forward to. Just reruns. How disappointing!
Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
Love it! Worth seeing more than once!
BIG SPOILERS! I've been looking forward to seeing this since last year when I heard they were making the book into a movie! I read the book back in 4th or 5th grade but I found the book quite boring. There were two movies that my friends and I wanted to see. We decided to see this instead of Epic Movie and we were glad that we made the right choice! The trailer was indeed VERY MISLEADING! My friends thought this was going to be like a Narnia movie. There was a scene where Jesse looked like he was flying as he climbed up a tree with Leslie. My friends thought he gained magical powers. This film was also rated 'G' where I live so the theatre was packed with families, parents and a lot of little kids. When Jesse arrives from his trip to the art museum, my friend and I, who already read the book in 5th grade, were like, "This is it! This is the part where they're going to reveal that Leslie died!" I wanted to see the reactions of my other friends, who haven't read the book yet but I wasn't able to because for some reason, I was drawn so much to the scene that I forgot to look! During Leslie's wake, the tears started coming. But I didn't want to cry so I held them back. At the part when Jesse heard his name being called in the woods, one child started screaming "Leslie! Leslie!" It was nice to know that besides my friends and I, so many other people had also fallen in love with the characters. Of course, (to those who has seen this movie), we know it was Maybelle calling Jesse's name, and not Leslie although we are made to think that it is Leslie as we see the movie through the eyes of Jesse. Just when everyone thought the heavy part was over, more heavy parts! Jesse pushing Maybelle, Maybelle crying, Jesse being chased by the "dark master", Jesse crying in the woods and bulding the bridge! All heartbreaking and heartwarming scenes! I seldom cry in the movies and the friends I'm with do not cry at the movies at all! So far, only this and Adam Sandler's Click have made me do that. This movie truly is a gem! Praises to all the actors and actresses! They did a great job! Annasophia Robb was great as Leslie and Josh Hutcherson was an awesome Jesse! He's acting made me want to go into the movie screen and give the poor kid a hug! Bailee Madison is SO adorable!!! Her talent is twice her size! Kudos to all the supporting cast as well and everyone involved in the movie! This is one of the few movies that touched me among so many others! It's one of those films worth seeing and enjoying a second time...or even a third with your family and friends!
