Oppenheimer (2023)
Music, music and more music!
Oppenheimer was a huge disappointment for me. There was music throughout the film with absolutely no breathing space at all in between. Utterly disappointed as I went to the cinema with high expectations. The music overshadowed everything in my opinion....even the actors performances...as it was trying to force emotions in every scene through its dramatic undertone. What a shame. I struggled to focus on what was being said as the music was so loud in places and it was all I could hear. I just wished it to stop. Apart from that the film is well shot and has some great performances....even by Matt Damon.
After watching it I remembered Nolan's other film Interstellar which again had music throughout. I don't think I'll be rushing to watch another Nolan film any time soon.
Delhi Crime: Episode #2.1 (2022)
Not a patch on series 1
The production values were pretty good but the script was poor, especially the dialogue between Vartika and her daughter and her conveying things about certain tribes to the media. I don't think the viewer needs things spelling out to them. Also unnecessarily 'Hollywoodised' in the script and the treatment of the series. It would've worked perfectly well within Indian standards due to its high production values. Very well shot and I think the intro is amazing. Disappointed with this series as the previous one left a lasting impact on me. It was by far one of the best series I've ever seen. It's still worth a watch though.
Nomadland (2020)
Just wanted it to end
I felt nothing for the main character nor empathised with her. I waited and waited to feel something but felt nothing till the end. I began to wonder if Frances Mcdormand was suitable for the role as boredom crept in within minutes into the film. None of the characters including Fern stood out to me. I found the plot not only lame but the treatment of the film a bit slack in terms of development of characters. Some of the acting by the non actors was great and that didn't go unnoticed but that's all that stood out for me. I really don't mind slow films if they have interesting characters and backgrounds. But unfortunately I found Nomadland just did not tick the right boxes for me.
Rich Hill (2014)
Absolutely Brilliant
Thought provoking documentary about poverty and its impact on families. Beautifully shot and edited. Captured some very intimate moments of the lives of three young lads. Its not preachy or judgemental but just gives you a slice of their lives It's easy for people to pass judgement and criticise the parents but no doubt the parents had a rough upbringing too and they therefore lack parenting skills. A very sad and touching film but very well produced and I'm glad I watched it.
Killer Ratings (2019)
Dragged On
This series puts you in the judges seat. You are given all the evidence or even lack of it so the question is who do you believe. I personally couldn't make my mind up knowing how corrupted the cops are. The series started out quite promising. There was a of footage and interviews from both sides etc but the episodes started to feel very dragged out and even though I watched 5 of the 7 episodes and I wanted to know what happened next I just couldn't bare another dragged out episode. I decided to abandon the series and just go online to find out what happened. I think just because you have hours and hours of footage, it doesn't mean you have to include everything in the final cut.
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Magnificent
I was hooked within a minute of watching it. This is a story about our connection with other species and also how they help us discover more about ourselves. It brought tears to my eyes. I found it more impactful than Planet Earth and other BBC documentaries. It is brilliantly produced, thought provoking, moving and also educative. I now want an Octopus!
The Last Narc (2020)
Compelling and heartbreaking
Difficult to watch but great piece of work by the producers and those who were brave enough to speak on camera. Absolutely brilliant production.
The Ripper (2020)
Thoroughly disappointed
The only good thing this first episode had to offer was the intro. Extremely well put together. The opening scene was promising and then the disappointment began. There was nothing new on offer and what I found most annoying was the choice of background music. It was not only relentless but the choice of music was inappropriate given the subject matter. The music over powered the interviews which was very distracting. It almost made the killings look trivial. I had high expectations from Netflix but I think the Yorkshire Ripper Files takes some beating.
