The Lost City (2022)
8/10
Cheesy fun!
28 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't go into this movie with high hopes because, let's face it, the premise is far from original.

However, right off the bat it had me laughing, and I loved that the damsel in distress being just as much the burly guy as well as the woman in a sparkly jumpsuit.

Channing's character was actually very sweet which was a pleasant surprise, and his 'fighting' alongside Brad Pitt had me giggling.

Loved Daniel Radcliffe, as always! My favourite character!

It's not going to win any awards but it's fun and well paced, perfect for a chicflick. Ignore the low ratings, it's seriously not that bad.

Turning Red (2022)

Slightly cringey but what 13 year old girl isn't?!
11 March 2022
There's a reason this movie is a PG and not a U! Everyone having a little turn because a 13 year old girl is given some maxi pads and has crushes on boys - it's not woke, it's reality.

And if you have a problem with characters wearing turbans/hijabs, then I really think you need to look deep inside yourself!

This movie doesn't feel like a Disney/Pixar because it's cringey and has anime elements - but it's still fun, and my 10 and 8 year old boys had no problem at all with seeing sanitary protection because guess what, they see it in our bathroom every day!

Sweet Salazar!!!!

If you are a real Potter fan, give this a miss!

It absolutely insults the intelligence of fans. The all American 'super fans' struggled to answer simple Potter facts and were blatant actors. The worst being the guy on the Ravenclaw team in episode 2 - he actually made me cringe, and the idiot woman on the Slytherin team who said she chose Slytherin because they have fabulous hair...! What does that even mean?? Is she choosing between Bellatrix or Voldemort??

Dame Helen's vibe is so far removed from the over-the-top, clapping seal contestants that it just seemed wooden in comparison, but she did well with the shambolic script.

All in all it is hideous, and they should really leave this sort of this to the Brits.

Cinderella (I) (2021)

To think I could have watched paint dry instead
18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
They literally said "how can we make a film to please the snowflake brigade" and then ran with it!

The fabulous godmother made me want to puke into mouth - so over the top and horribly acted.

Cinderella was an absolute drip - the constant 'dreamy eye closing' was so bad.

The prince was good looking. He was handed a rubbish script and some lipstick.

Pierce Brosnan needs to sue somebody because he was obviously sold a lie when he got involved in this movie, as was Idina Menzel.

James acaster and romesh ranganathan were actually pretty good. Not James cordon though - he either needs to stick to Gavin and Stacey or carpool karaoke. Stop making movies!

Overall, save your time and put it towards something more beneficial like counting the blades of grass in your garden or something!

Gavin & Stacey (2007–2024)
10/10
My favourite comfort show
6 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Who doesn't love Gavin & Stacey? Mad people, that's who! I watched every episode 'live' On BBC3 and was hooked from the first episode, excited every week for the few episodes they'd release, and remember being so chuffed for the show when it moved to a prime slot in BBC1. I wondered in the beginning why the 2 writers would make themselves supporting characters, but it was obvious from around S1E3 that the main story was, in fact, Nessa and Smithy, with Gavin and Stacey being the supporting roles. Very clever writing to achieve this without the writers coming over as egocentric. My favourite thing about this show is how flawed all the characters are. No one is perfect and polished, and they all have idiosyncrasies that make them all the more loveable - from Pam pretending to be vegetarian to cover up the fact she forgot to provide veggie options during the 2 families first meeting, to Doris being an absolute Randy queen! I always chuckle at the names 'big, fat Sue', 'no man Jan', 'Japanese Margret', and 'Chinese Alan' etc, because we all have nicknames for people we know, and it shows the classic Britishness that we aren't overly PC, but it comes from a place of warmth. As though the people being talked about are in on the joke. Especially in the case of Seth. The relationship between Dawn and Pete is the opposite end of the spectrum to Pam and Mick, and it makes for hilarious viewing. The wedding ring and vows from their renewal was comedy gold, and I cried during the Christmas 2019 special when Dawn was convinced Pete was a junkie, and then they all got stoned together. I hope that Ruth Jones and James corden will tie up the loose ends and let fans know if smithy said yes to Nessa's proposal, but considering the way they constantly teased about the fishing trip, I wouldn't put it past them to simply leave it to the fans imagination, and part of me likes that. However, I will continue to watch reruns (as I'm doing right now) and my love for the show will never falter...only now I say every line along with the characters. Because to be frank, if you've never said 'OH! Whats occurin?', then you've never lived!

Soul (2020)
7/10
Could have been a teaching moment, but they bottled it.
27 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have highly anticipated this movie and was excited to sit down and watch with my 2 youngest boys (7 and 9). My first thought is - it's a little too complex for children. We had to stop a few times and explain why souls were lost etc, and some of the graphics (the ones used for the counsellors) were a little too abstract and 'weird'. The direction of the movie seemed on course to explain that Joe's 'spark' was teaching (a lovely idea seeing as I work in education myself) but it changed track in the last 10 or so minutes, and went on to say living is the spark. Not a horrible concept, but seemed pointless to have him as a teacher. 22's journey was enjoyable - how she discovered her love for life, and then her descent into anxiety and bitterness when Joe took her badge and left her behind. I do feel her story was left unfinished - it would have been nice to see her in a glimpse in the future. Though, with Pixar films, it'll probably turn out that she's Boo from Monsters.inc or Riley from Inside out. The ending ruined this moving for me. I geared myself up to have a little discussion with my children about how Joe was ready to move to the beyond and how he wasn't scared or unhappy, and I was pleased to be able to have this little teaching moment...until they bottled it and gave Joe a second chance at life. I literally felt the wind leave my sails, and ultimately my children were confused as I'd been gently explaining that Joe was going to pass over (whilst on the conveyor belt). Even after we had finished the movie, my 7 year old asked me what his spark would have been (he thinks it's maths lol) and I had to explain that 'the spark' wasn't a purpose but was being ready to live, which was kind of explained in the movie but obviously not in depth enough. So, overall, a lovely movie. Maybe just not for kids.
