Nocebo (2022)
Never trust a Filipino witch if you're white
Moral of the story is never trust a Filipino if you're white and they say "Trust me. I can help you."
Also we are encouraged to eat Filipino cuisine. (It's the latest fad, move over Indian).
Also, when a servant thinks that they own the room in your house, fire them and show them the exit door immediately.
When your child allies with a new international nanny against you, then you really have issues.
Don't keep little birds in a cage. It's just cruel, and if they try to kill you, you deserve it.
If you intend to work in a sweatshop with your daughter, might be a good idea to take a bottle of water with you, especially if that factory is in Philippines.
The Big Ugly (2020)
Quality acting makes it worth watching
Simple enough story but the acting is top notch and the script is believable in presenting the inevitable violence that comes with retribution. Vinnie Jones artfully portrays the conscientious bad guy who will stop at nothing to serve revenge on a pure evil man.
The Ice Road (2021)
Another simple yet entertaining movie from Liam Neeson.
Predictable and flawed screenplay but hey it's a Liam Neeson action movie in the snow. Guaranteed entertainment. Nuff said.
Never Grow Old (2019)
Wtf happened to Cusack?
Cusack looks ridiculous in this role. He in no way is believable as a tough guy character. He looks more like a slug in a trenchcoat and hat. And what's going on with that black mascara under his tired eyes? Sorry Mr. Director but dressing up a fat sloth in black western clothes doesn't make him a scary villain any more than glitter makeup and high heels make a fat black chick look sexy. Emile Hirsch saved this movie from the junk heap.
Everything Beautiful Is Far Away (2017)
Evokes a similar feeling as when I first read the Little Prince.
I didn't know anything about this film. The title and cover image resonated with me. I really enjoyed the quietness and atmosphere of the film. It reminded me of how I felt when I first read the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The music is wonderful and lends well to the story. Garner and Cross are magical to watch.
Annihilation (2018)
Females only club destroys film
This is what happens when a female empowerment club made up of over the hill actors and lesbians takes center stage in a sci-fi film. If you want to see a movie that overcompensates in woman roles and that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy when clanging Bellinis together at your next lesbian/considering lesbian/feel more secure with lesbians social gathering, you should go see this movie. If you want to see an entertaining, thought provoking, imaginative piece of science fiction story telling, save your money and wait for Netflix to buy this garbage special effects dribble. Don't be fooled by the fact that Portman and Oscar Isaac agreed to act in this film. They don't save it. In fact the entire time they're on screen they have the look of regret on their faces. I guess the kool aid they were drinking at the last convention wore off.
Kill Command (2016)
Worth the watch
If you're like me, you are very leery of low budget sci-fi and horror films that are written and directed by the same person who is relatively unknown and not yet an established filmmaker. More times than not, the script and acting are embarrassingly amateur and a complete waste of your time. Well, this film is a definite exception to that generalization. Apart from the lame title, this film is actually quite entertaining and worth the watch. The special effects are quite impressive and the acting and plot is good enough to keep your interest from beginning to end. If you are a fan of movies like Skyline, Predator, and Terminator, you will probably enjoy this film.
Avatar (2009)
What's the big deal about this movie?
This movie is simply a blend of pieces of other successful movies.
Blue People: Smurfs, Mystique from X-Men, William Wallace with blue war-paint face in Braveheart.
Battle Mechs: Mech-Loader in Aliens, Transformers, Ironman.
Jungle Beasts: Jurassic Park, King Kong.
The Giant, Glowing Tree: Lord of the Rings Elf Tree, Ewok tree village in Return of the Jedi.
Outsider joins tribe, falls in love with Chief's daughter and fights with alpha male warrior: Dances with Wolves, Pathfinder, the New World, many other films.
Creatures from the forest join in the fight: Lord of the Rings the Ents, Ewoks in Return of the Jedi.
Respecting the balance of nature and life: the Lion King, the Last of the Mohicans, Apocalypto, Dances with Wolves.
Shaman/Holy Witchdoctor: the Lion King baboon Rafiki, Apocalypto, Dances with Wolves, many other films.
Flying dragons: Pitch Black, the Neverending Story, the Lord of the Rings, Dragon heart, Eragon.
Suppressed, technologically inferior race of people rebel against a superior, ruthless force: Dances with Wolves, the Lord of the Rings the Two Towers, Equilibrium, Star Wars saga, 300, Independence Day, many others.
The spirit-lifting pre-battle speech: Braveheart, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings Return of the King, 300, Independence Day, many other films.
All these memorable aspects of great movies cleverly inserted into a well used formula plot pumped up with really advanced computer animation. Wow! I am not impressed! Anybody who raves about Avatar really hasn't seen that many great films in their lifetime. Which by the average age of most of the audience being 12, is not surprising.
Adventureland (2009)
Amateur, Contrived, Pretentious, like many movies these days.
This movie is a great example of a formula screenplay. First you get a look-alike for the nervous, self-conscious geek who starred in Superbad. Then you get a young looker like Kristen Stewart. Set the story in the middle of an Amusement Park filled with losers, nerds, sluts, and jerks. Soundtrack with 80's pop tunes, 70's cars(what's with the obsession with Pacers? Get over it), when you run out of dialogue have the kids toke on a joint or swig back some alcohol and make light of it even though they drive impaired in this movie which is really not funny at all and reprehensible. A basic and over-used plot of a young geek on the verge of losing his virginity but only to the right girl, and there you go! 4 out of 10 for lazy, unimaginative film-making.
Second Coming (2009)
cliché imitation crap
This movie isn't worth the film it was photographed on. The dialog is flat, filled with cliché overused lines and delivered by amateur actors who sound like their reading a script for the first time. The choppy, shaky, film style is a cheap imitation of the "The Ring" style visual effects. The characters do not even act like a normal person would. For example, the character who is looking for her twin sister at her home forces her way through the front door, creeps around the house all frightened and sobbing and she doesn't even once call out her sister's name to see if she is home. What? You would think she had just buried her sister instead of searching for her. Way too many flashbacks to her childhood. Too many unnecessary flashbacks is a typical sign of an amateur director. It is actually funny watching the numerous shots of the woman driving her car down the street, up the driveway, around this corner, over here, over there, oh a side view, now a front view. Enough already. You would think you are watching a TV commercial for the Solaris! Terrible movie. 0 out of 100. I really pity anybody who spent money making this film or to watch it.
Passchendaele (2008)
Bad imitation of two other successful films.
I was hoping this film would be good but honestly it is simply a Canadian low budget imitation of "Legends of the Fall" combined with "Saving Private Ryan". The cinematography is excellent, however it takes a lot more than carefully staged camera shots to make a movie interesting to watch. The dialog is sparse and drab, the acting is mediocre at best, and the screenplay itself is typical Hollywood formula writing. You don't feel for the characters in this film, and many of the supporting characters come off like overacting stage thespians. This story would have been better as a romance novel. Read a book about this battle instead. If you want to be entertained, watch "Saving Private Ryan" and "Legends of the Fall" simultaneously.
The Prestige (2006)
Finally, a film you can really sink your teeth into, and boy is it juicy!
Brilliant screenplay. Excellent acting. Perfect directing. Oscar goes to the Director, screenwriter, Actor Hugh Jackman, Supporting actor David Bowie. Yes, David Bowie is outstanding as Tesla. I could imagine an entire movie based on his character alone.
I am a very discerning movie aficionado, and this the best film I have seen in years. A masterpiece of film-making thanks to Chistopher Nolan and his brother. Christian Bale is also very convincing in his role as he always is in every film in which he acts. I wish I could buy shares in his career fund. I would surely make a million!
Michael Caine is always great as a supporting role and adds a dimension of warmth and humanity to every film he is in.
This is one film you won't want to miss a moment of, so get your snacks well before the opening scene.
See it! You won't be disappointed!
