Nightcrawler (2014)
Success comes at a price!
What will you do become successful? Do something illegal? Do something IMMORAL?
A man (introduced as a 'thief') is ready to anything! And in cold blood. Portrayed in an excellent way by Jake Gyllenhaal the character "Lou", 'a very quick learner', learns about night-crawling and starts at the bottom.
He not only learns the tricks of the trade but excels in them. He does whatever it takes to get to the story first. He climbs the ladder of success rapidly only to find himself in a situation which can make or break him. An intense crime-thriller flavored with ambition, betrayal, rivalry and manipulation Nnightcrawler is a must watch for movie buffs.
Jalsaghar (1958)
So very human!
Tagore in one of his short stories had written (while describing a husband's desperate effort to hold on to his wife when there was no hope) that when one tries harder to grab on to a fistful of mercury it only flows out more through the gaps of the fingers.
I think this same analogy describes this movie perfectly. The old Zamindar tries really really hard to hold on to the lost glory of his family through his music room (Jalsaghar) when there's no hope. He loses everything. He loses his mind. And finally in an act of madness loses his very life.
I think, through this movie Ray has brought out something very essential to being a human being: Pride (mixed with false hope) and its power to drive a person insane.
One of Ray's masterpieces: will definitely compel you to watch more of Ray's films.
À la folie... pas du tout (2002)
L is for the way you look at me
Love, as they say, is deadlier than hate sometimes: Love which is actually not but obsession!
A young girl is obsessed with one of her neighbors who is married. The girl devices plans (even sinister ones) to get the man.
The director/story-teller does an awesome job to make the viewer think otherwise for most part of the movie. If you are not reading this review before watching the movie then I think you'll definitely agree with me that it came as a shock when you got to know that whatever was happening was the work of an obsessed lover!
Even when everything looks fine and you are contemplating a happy ending the director throws a bucketful of surprise to make your pupil dilated and put a smirk on your lips.
Pyaasa (1957)
What does it mean to be a true poet/artist?
This movie goes on to show what a real poet/artist (basically any truly creative person) should strive to be: Honest above anything else.
False recognition, monetary rewards and hypocrisy was banging loudly at the door of art and literature world at the time. This is still true and ever increasing as I see it. Guru Dutt successfully brought out all these in this amazing movie bound together with songs, which are as much rich in terms of lyrics as much in melody.
Human emotions and ethics are brought into play to showcase the difficulties an honest artist faces in this two-faced world. This movie also tries to uncover the true nature of love.
This is a must watch for everyone - creative or not.
