Battle: Los Angeles (2011)
Why so negative?
Maybe I'm biased because I'm an 0311 myself but I actually enjoyed this movie. Yes the plot was simple, and the one liners were pretty bad, the character development was lacking, etc. But I think that people overlook the good qualities of the movie. I think that it's simplicity is the beauty of it. It's a movie showing Marines doing what they're supposed to do, protect the American people. It's not trying to make a statement about anything other than the fact that the United States Military is willing to protect America against any threat. The characters are pretty bland, not awful just boring, with the only truly bad performance being turned in by Michelle Rodriguez. The dialogue is a little cheesy, but the way the Marines interact is somewhat accurate. Also the CGI is above average, it's not mind blowing but it's better than most. Now I don't think that it should be in the talk for best picture or anything like that but I don't see why there is so much animosity towards this film. All in all I'll give it a 6.5/10.
Avatar (2009)
Awesome CGI, Mediocre Plot, Bland Characters
Avatar was an unbelievable film in terms of it's CGI. The planet of Pandora looked truly amazing and are arguably the best of all time. Other than that though, the movie wasn't all that impressive. Typically I'm a big fan of Cameron, Terminator & Terminator 2 are a few of my favorite movies, Aliens is as well so I was rather let down by the storyline in this movie. It was your typical capitalism bad/native way of life good mixed with a clash of cultures romance. Essentially a crippled Marine named Jake Sully gets sent to a planet on the dime of some greedy corporation. The planet is populated by a bunch of space indians. He is then given control over a Na'vi(space Indian), which is a giant blue humanoid creature, via genetic engineering. He then comes to realize that, gasp, the corporation is greedy and wants to harvest unobtainium(and yes it's really hard to mine it's almost unobtainable) at whatever cost. The greedy corporation hires a bunch of former Marines as mercs to ensure that they are protected from these space indians. Well as the movie progresses Jake starts to feel bad about these indians and falls in love with one of them. After he discovers a plan in which the Na'vi are going to be attacked by the Mercs he decides to forsake his humanity and join them. I personally have a deep rooted hatred for Jake Sully. I am a Marine myself and think that he is the worst traitor in cinema history. I can understand if you don't agree with what your ordered to do, but firing on your brothers is the worst thing I can think of. And yes I know they were "Mercs" but the saying is "Once a Marine always a Marine" so in my book Jake Sully is one of the worst villains of all time. The rest of the characters are pretty bland though. You have your typical tough chick with Michelle Rodriguez, your bad ass military leader, warrior princess/love interest, and multiple other bland played out characters. All in all this wasn't a bad movie, I was just irked by the anti-capitalist and anti-military theme it took, and also rather bothered by the lackluster plot. 6/10
Tank Girl (1995)
A masterpiece without equal!
I believe that this movie is the Holy Grail of bad films. It has everything one would look for in the worst movie of all time. Most annoying protagonist ever. Check. Terrible acting. Check. Bad storyline. Check. This movie is undoubtedly the worst film I've ever seen which is truly saying something. For years I have scoured late night TV, Wal-Mart bargain bins, and On-Demand looking for a movie to bestow this title upon and I can now say that I have completed this task. This film has no redeeming qualities either. Most movies you can say the acting was bad but at least it had a good premise, but not here this film has nothing going for it. I highly recommend that everyone watch this film because every movie you watch from here on out you can say at least it's better than Tank Girl.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008)
Surprisingly Good
This show surprised me with how well it was made. I have been a huge fan of the Terminator series and honestly I expected this show to be, quite frankly, awful. It adds a new twist to series which I think is a great move. After T3 I was disappointed by the death of Sarah Conner and the long gap between John Connor the 12 year old street punk and his evolution to the 25 year old John Connor who is now leader of mankind. This show is looking like it is going to fill in most of those gaps. So far I like where this show is going and I hope that it stays on the air. Overall a very good show definitely worth watching. The only downside is that Summer Glau is no Arnold.
Robot Chicken (2001)
Most Underrated Show
Robot Chicken is one of, if not the funniest show on television right now, and yet most people I know have never even heard of it. The show mocks everyone and everything. I think that because of it's relative obscurity on adult swim it's overshadowed by Family Guy and South Park(both of which I also love). Some of the skits are absolutely hysterical, especially the where are they now with Michael Moore and the Unsolved Murder Cases. Maybe these are funny to me because they use characters from my childhood that have all but been forgotten. Aside from the comedy aspect of the show which is actually the only aspect of it, is the staggering list of guest stars this show has. It is on par with the tonight show for the number and the status of the guest stars they produce. In summation do not overlook this show, especially if you can remember TV from the mid-80's to early 90's.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
Different Kind of Love
This movie is not my favorite love story, but nonetheless it's a good one. It is anything but a traditional story, but I think that it does a much better job of capturing the characters true emotions, than almost any romantic movie out there today. Both Shue and Cage come from different walks of life, and each have their own emotional problems. This makes it entertaining as a couple because they are essentially dysfunctional, but still manage to maintain a relationship. The performance by Cage is awesome, and Shue does a great job as well. Overall this movie is a rather dark love story with great acting and a good plot. My only complaints over the movie is that there are few minor characters and throughout the movie the volume is low and some dialog is hard to hear, also in many scenes the camera angle makes it hard to see what exactly is happening.
