Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Oscar Winner worthy of its renown
Shakespeare in Love is one of those lushly photographed and exceptionally witty movies that are a rarity. Too bad Shakespeare himself isn't around to see this one because even HE would probably find it quite amusing. Gwyneth Paltrow is particularly great. In fact, she's never been better. The plot is one of the most clever you will run across as a bold "reconstruction" of history. It's not meant to be taken seriously, but is convincing enough as to pull off a very unlikely set of circumstances quite well.
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
One of Nora Ephron's Best
This movie is one of Nora Ephron's best. Tom Hanks couldn't be more charming and the story, though very simple, is about as sweet as they get. I won't give away the ending, but the nature of fate and location collide in a way that you won't forget. 9 out of 10 stars.
Fatal Attraction (1987)
Classic Psychotic Affair Movie
Of all the Psycho movies involving an illicit affair, this one is the granddaddy of them all. Michael Douglas has become known for these roles where he's a very flawed but nevertheless likeable guy who finds himself trapped by his own regrettable actions. In this movie, his weakness for Glenn Close is all the more hard to take when he has such a sweet, perfect wife in Anne Archer. This movie created quite a bit of controversy when it first came out and remains provocative even today.
Up Against Amanda (2000)
Interesting Slant on Obsessed Lover Genre
This movie was released by Roger Corman, so you know that the filmmakers didn't have much money to work with.
Although, some viewers may miss the subtleties in this movie because of the very typical "obsessed killer" type marketing approach, there are unique differences about this movie.
AMANDA, as played by the obviously talented Justine Priestley, is a complex character. Some people like these movies precisely because the violence can seem random, but here the ramifications of past abuse (dealt with in a realistic but tasteful manner) are what shape the psychosis of AMANDA. Surprisingly, Amanda redeems herself at the end with an act of love, where most of these movies turn into the typical, all out fight to the death and the evil character dies just as evil in the end as to begin with.
Some rough edges in this picture, but I have to give it 7 out of 10 stars based on its thoughtfulness and yes, originality as compared to the usual -- especially on a budget.
Soultaker (1990)
Eerily Fun...
Michael, I liked it. I don't know what's wrong with people who can't find something good about anything. Call me independent. I thought this movie was much better than a lot of things I've seen. At least it wasn't derivative or a remake of something else, which is all that seems to get made these days.
