Free to Love (1925)
Nearly 100 years old
This was one of Clara Bow's films that had passed me by , I thought I had seen them all , being a fan and all that
The version I watched was a bad print but what do you expect , as my heading states the film is nearly 100 years old , but Clara when you can see her properly still looks amazing
The plot is silly ,, this film apparently took two weeks to make ,and it shows ,
but I only watched it for Clara , I must ask why in every film the leading men and love interests are always old enough to be her dad
I would recommend watching just to glean every performance of the genuine IT Girls the one and only Clara Bow ,
Who Dares Wins (1982)
Hadley 456
The film is a product of its age , an age of paranoia , and a genuine fear of a nuclear war .
The film is a slow burn ,but anyone watching today who did not live through the 80s , would get a real feel for how things were, the CND movement , Clergymen latching onto radical groups ,, reds under the bed , a Frankie goes to Hollywood soundtrack would have completed the mental picture
As I stated the film takes an age to get going , but for me when actor Tony Doyle Colonel Hadley utters those immortal words "Hadley 456" all hell breaks loose ,
The Assault there are two , for me the mews assault is far the best
The Scottish SAS Trooper is fantastic , in control professional
The fight is believable motherly instincts take over , Jenny Skellen Rosalind Lloyd gives Helga. Ingrid Pitt a right good hiding that scene for me is the best in the film
when the SAS make the breach its text book "on a side note on seeing this in the cinema I was 18 at the time ,when the assault troop entered the room , I shouted Gas Board , in the Cinema , it did get a big laugh , my timing was better in those days "
The Final assault in the film even the first time I saw it was over the top
Troopers dangling off ropes to assault a building its over the top , as are about eight troopers descending the roof all at once , its to messy
but as we know now when the special forces go in they go in hard
Collins does a good job , and to be fair he passed SAS selection in real life
may his memory live on
Secret Agent Selection: WW2 (2018)
Real history by real people
I found the show by accident skipping through the channels glad I did
a fascinating series giving a glimpse of the training process for former SOE recruits , the training apparently is taken from declassified manuals its authentic as it can be , to the point you can no longer beat the recrutes or non are allowed to get killed during the training ,
There are a few stand out recruits. Lizzie Jeffreys. she looks the part , reminds me of. Honeysuckle Weeks. in Foyles War. , she has the same clipped posh voice
small in stature ,but she is clearly a tough cookie
and Dan apparently a property developer , other reports say he's a model and an actor , well he had come dressed for the part , he looked like an extra from salad days , as fake as they come , most had worked him out day one
You see TV you can make reality shows if you try that make people think , lets see more of this
Hollywood (1980)
A labour of love
Due to Copyright and licencing issues we are unlikely to see a re realise of this on DVD in the UK i had to watch the shows on You tube .
Quite frankly one of the most uplifting moving thought provoking documentaries you will ever see , only the World at War could compete in depth of subject
Producers Directors Writers David Gill and Kevin Brownlow clearly love the silent film era , this is clearly not a job its a calling .
Kevin has said they had to do it as nobody else would or cared , thankfully they did as the silent stars were passing away there recollections of the era would be lost for ever .
Icons like Lillian Gish in later life recounting there glorious past is quite frankly astonishing , a lot of these legends died shortly after production , by securing interviews that nobody else now can, has made this series priceless
The Producers managed to secure interviews from absolute legends of the era Colleen Moore is my favourite she comes over so youthful , closely followed by the very likable "Buddy" Rogers
The Producers also interview Art Directors , Camera Men , and the Legendary Showbiz Writer Adela Rogers St. Johns .
A must for film fans but all a must for anyone ,
Kid Boots (1926)
Fun Romp
What a fantastic film , this was Eddie Cantors first forage into motion pictures , i read that Clara helped him address the camera , as he was prone to delivering his performance up towards the perceived audience , shame nobody could help Clara with her microphone fright later in her career .
The film is standard Boy meets Girl , well boys meet Girls ,the casting is spot on , Clara's star was rising the next year she would make "It" and become world famous .
A fantastic film all the players do there bit the direction and editing move it along nicely
fabulous fun, bless all those stars of old
Flight of the Phoenix (2004)
The Director
The film is a Joke, the Director (Moore), states in the DVD Extras Section. That he had never seen the original Film. If he had he would Learn how to Direct, He should stick to Pop Videos. Bizarrely there is a Music Video segment in the film, it's totally out of Place destroys any Tension there may have been, I would not trust Moore to Direct Traffic. It would have be interesting if the Film had been properly Cast , and a Competent Director had been hired, the Original story , of Men (No Women ) they only distract in this instance , was a great one of Man overcoming themselves, the Elements , and Technical Problems to Survive You don't need masses of swarming tribesmen if you have conveyed a sense of pending Doom, from the slow Painful death of Dehydration.
