Terrifier 2 (2022)
9/10
Bigger, better, bloodier. A great slasher.
17 October 2022
Art the Clown is quickly developing a reputation as the next horror icon. In 'Terrifier 2' Damien Leone and David Howard Thornton take the character to darker and more extreme places than in the original film.

This sequel follows a girl named Sienna and her younger brother Jonathan as they gear up for Halloween season in Miles County...but the town still is creeped out by the legend of Art the Clown's bloody killings and the mystery of where he's gone. Jonathan is obsessed, to the point of wanting to dress like Art for Halloween, which Sienna doesn't quite get, while their aloof mom thinks he's just going through a phase.

Something I really liked about this film is that it spends a lot of time developing the protagonists and making the audience care what happens to them as we get to know them. 'Terrifier' focused on Art the Clown just hacking and slashing his way through underdeveloped characters while 'Terrifier 2' explores the family dynamics of Sienna and Jonathan, and especially the transformation of Sienna as she and Art the Clown eventually face off.

Art the Clown's origins are investigated a bit deeper and while we may not get a clear-cut answer as to who or what he is, or his motives, I think this film does answer once and for all whether or not he is supernatural, so that was cool.

This film is bloooooddddyyy, people. Really bloody. The kills are brutal above and beyond anything we saw in the last film. I mean, that's what we're here to see, so you won't leave disappointed. I'm still thinking about one particular kill involving a friend of Sienna's in her bedroom.... Damn, Art sure got his kicks in this film. He reminds me a bit of Freddy Krueger in the way he expresses the sick thrills he gets out of what he does; yeah he doesn't talk but he doesn't need to -- his expressions say it all and Thornton totally rocks this role. You can tell he loves it.

Man, I really liked the buildup throughout the film leading to where Sienna, Jonathan and Art eventually link up and what goes down. This film feels very epic, and for me it payed off in the end.

I'm excited see what's next in store for the Terrifier franchise. Lauren LaVera did an awesome job as Sienna, she's the next iconic final girl in the slasher world as far as I'm concerned.

Also, this film looks very polished; very studio-produced, which is not a knock on it, because it still does have that late-night grindhouse vibe to it, but you can tell a lot of time was spent in the 6 years it took to get it released for 'Terrifier 2' to be the best film that it could be. Go watch it and enjoy! Congrats to this film for having success at the box office and receiving the recognition it deserves. Slasher greatness!

The best part of this trilogy
17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So I've watched 'Halloween Ends' 3 times on Peacock so far, and am about to sit down and watch it again...so, long story short, I love it.

Why?

This film showcases David Gordon Green's most prolific directional efforts. He was able to capture the aesthetic of the Halloween season in Haddonfield; the atmosphere is very creepy, very autumn and very reminiscent of the early entries in the franchise throughout. Not only that, but the way he was able to shift the narrative between Corey, Laurie, Alyson and Michael Myers kept me engaged with each character the whole time.

Moving on to the characters and performances, this is my favorite version of Laurie Strode in this trilogy and probably since the original. She comes across as confident, ready to face her fears, not allowing herself to live in the shadow of Michael Myers any longer. This film is set 4 years after the events of 'Halloween Kills' and you can really see the personal growth in Laurie Strode since then.

Alyson is brought more center stage here. I always felt like this trilogy was setting her up for bigger things, and this entry explores her character in more depth, including her relationship with Laurie as they continue to grow and heal together, and how she and Corey connect.

And that's just it -- this movie almost doesn't feel like a Halloween movie at times. It feels almost like a character study, driven by suspense and even romance -- yes, romance! Not overkill in that department, but the bond between Alyson and Corey was really interesting and drove the movie forward quite a bit. I loved it.

Fair warning: we don't see Michael Myers until about 1/3 of the way into the film. Do with that information what you will; it seems to be dividing a lot of hardcore Halloween fans right now, but I think the character exploration of Corey Cunningham and his transformation throughout the film is enough to keep people engaged, and Myers comes on screen at just the right time.

The dialogue is markedly improved in this film. No more of the one-liners and all-too-profound stuff from Laurie, no more of the "evil dies tonight"....the conversations had by the characters in 'Halloween Ends' feel natural and relatable. Also the attempts at humor are waaaaayyyy scaled back here. The tone of this film is completely serious and tense throughout.

So I do wish the final confrontation between Michael and Laurie was longer and better. It's not bad, I'm not upset about It, it's just that it seems too convenient that they were both in the same place at the same time, and by time the fight breaks out, it's fast -- like, whoa okay I guess we're doing this now! The plot jumps there kinda quick. But hey, I can deal with it. The movie has way too many positives to dwell on the negatives.

Corey Cunningham's transformation throughout the film, his interactions with Michael and Alyson, Laurie's persona.... Man, it all adds up to such an awesome movie. This was a great way to end this trilogy within the timeline and I can't wait to see what's in store for Michael Myers next. Because keep in mind, 'Halloween Ends' is only the end of this trilogy; not the franchise. "You can't kill the boogeyman!"

Barbarian (2022)

A fun creepfest
11 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The horror of 'Barbarian' lies in the suspense that's created. Right from the get-go, the whole situation between Tess and Kieth feels off, and I found myself sitting there anxiously waiting to see if this was gonna turn into some kind of psycho killer kidnapping a girl type of movie. But just when the viewer thinks things are gonna go one way, the film throws a curveball.

This movie has really good cinematography and lighting, especially during the tunnel scenes (you'll see) which are atmospherics and will make you nervous. Also, the music is awesome and contributes to that sense of dread. Our final girl, Tess, makes some really silly and frustrating decisions at times but hey, if you're willing to overlook that, you'll enjoy the movie. Once a big reveal happens, the monstrous villain is shown, and 'Barbarian' turns from a suspense-fueled film into a more standard popcorn flick, honestly. Another cool thing about it is how the story revolves around a few main characters, the narrative shifts so we get to spend a little time with each one, and then their stories are tied together. Sort of an unconventional way of approaching this kind of stuff, so I appreciated that.

This is the type of movie I'd think would go straight to Shudder. Good, fun, pretty solid overall. It is even creepier in its more subtle, psychologically-driven moments as opposed to its louder, in-your-face moments, in my opinion. I'd be interested if there were a prequel revolving around Richard Brake's character and what went down in the house decades prior to the events of this movie.

The Esther show
21 August 2022
I have to say, the team behind 'Orphan: First Kill' had a quite challenging task on their hands in terms of creating an experience that would be scary and would be able to expand the story of Esther further. I've been following the development of this film for a while - even before it was announced to be a prequel - and wasn't sure how good it would be if it ever did come out. Thirteen years between the original and a potential sequel made it seem like things were on shaky ground. Well anyway, here we finally are with this film and it actually worked well.

This film sees Isabelle Fuhrman return as Esther and man, she's so perfect for the part. Creepily loveable! She really knows how to play a psychotic "child" like a pro. Even the way she smiles at the camera and her facial expressions are intense. I actually think there are moments in 'Orphan: First Kill' in which Esther's brutality surpasses that of the first movie, if only by a little bit...There are some great kills. She'd able to transition from innocent to nightmarish at the drop of a hat. Make no mistake, this is Fuhrman's movie.

Now, I'm sure if you've read reviews of the film prior to mine, or if you've seen the original 'Orphan' you might be wondering how this prequel manages to avoid the "copy and paste the same story" trap. The answer is, there's a plot twist about halfway through that takes the story in a completely different direction than the first one. I'm not gonna spoil it here but just know that once it happens, all bets are off. You'll be in suspense wondering how it will play out.

There's a noticeable difference in directional style. William Brent Bell helmed 'Orphan: First Kill' and while he did a very competent job, I prefer the aesthetic of the original. Hard to explain, but the best way I can put it is, the original definitely had a bigger budget and it shows, and the director of the original, Collet-Serra, simply provided a superior cinematic experience with his use of angles, settings and technique.

The cast is good. Julia Stiles did fine - in my opinion she's no Vera Farmiga but she's fine. Her character being the way she is makes more sense as the film unfolds. The supporting cast all did their thing; I prefer the family in the original film but in this one Esther gets a good amount or screen time and at the end of the day, that's what I waited all these years for. My major problem with the family in this one is, I feel not enough time was spent fleshing out the characters and building an emotional bond, which was a big component of the original. Still, it's all good and doesn't really hurt the film.

So overall it wasn't quite as high quality as the original but it was very good, all things considered. This could've been a real bomb but the plot was creative enough to keep me engaged and surprised. Esther was badass as ever and I'm looking forward to the future of this franchise.

Big-scale sci-fi fare from Jordan Peele. A great experience in the theater!
24 July 2022
This was a really great movie theater going experience, and I'm gonna say it is quite on par with Jordan Peele's excellent debut film 'Get Out'. Peele really outdid himself here; this film is very ambitious in the level of creativity and how the whole thing was shot. 95% of the movie takes place in desert regions, and he makes really good use of the setting, especially during the night time scenes and the angles he uses to pan to the sky when building tension.

Another thing that blew me away was the sound design; this film goes from very quiet and subtle to very loud and abrupt, and in such a way that it really makes you feel the dread or urgency that the characters are feeling. During those subtle moments, you nearly want to hold your breath... It is just that nerve Dash shredding. The performances from Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer add to that sense of being in that world with them. Brother - sister dynamic was so believable throughout the film.

Speaking of performances, I'm hearing some commentary that Kaluuya was unemotional at times. I don't agree. Without going into spoilers, something happens at the beginning of the film that definitely affected the well-being of his character OJ throughout the remainder of it. I think his minimalist approach at times was necessary and intentional and actually adds to the depths of his character. He wasn't over-the-top dramatic ever, but showed restraint during the first two-thirds while proving what range he really has in the third act of the film.. Another amazing performance and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors currently working.

Now to actually comment on the plot and horror elements of the film, just know that this is a film you have to have patience with. Like all good stories it takes time to develop and build so be prepared to take this ride with the main characters and go into it with an open mind. This is very much a family - centric drama for a good portion of the movie. It doesn't go straight into the otherworldly stuff, or the scares... It's about a family's life and relationship. When the horror does kick in, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised because the film takes a bit of an unexpected turn from what you might think is really going on. It reminded me of the movie Signs a little bit, in the way it was set up and the suspense that it conveyed, but halfway through the film is where that Jordan Peele spectacular magic comes in heavy and man, he really went all out here. This film isn't about anything other than bringing Something new and fresh to sci-fi and horror. It takes elements from a genre that we've all seen before but truly does make them fresh, fun and original.

I don't wanna say anymore than that because I don't want to give away spoilers, but if you like Jordan Peeles work and are interested in seeing a creative new movie, check out Nope. Just make sure you see it in the theater to appreciate all the work that went into it. It really is top notch and continues to show Peele's talent.

Incantation (2022)
9/10
One of the scariest films of 2022.
9 July 2022
'Incantation' is Asian horror at the pinnacle of its creepiness. I personally am a fan of Asian horror films, having seen classics like Onibaba and Kuroneko, and more current ones like The Medium and The Sadness. As a horror fan, these types of films hit different for me primarily because they rely on storytelling, atmosphere and cultural elements as opposed to unnecessary gore or jump scares.

Without giving away spoilers, to provide a brief synopsis of 'Incantation' I'll say it revolves around a woman who has recently gone through a supernatural experience six years prior and could not care for her young daughter because of the trauma. Now regaining custody rights, her daughter goes home from a foster home to live with her mom and it doesn't take long for creepy things to start happening. We learn the supernatural elements deal with a tunnel and a curse.... That's all I'm gonna say. The film is presented as found footage and the narrative shifts between the events six years prior and the present day.

Again, this movie is very eerie, it's not your standard haunted house flick, and it will stay with you, for sure. If you're into Taiwanese cinema and are a horror fan I can't recommend it highly enough; I was impressed with the practical effects, the performances and how the tension built throughout the film. It's on Netflix now so definitely watch it.

No narrative. No plot. No feeling. If this is what can pass as art, we need to be concerned. I won't waste any more time on this, as it's not even worth your time reading about it. Avoid.

Men (2022)
9/10
Will be controversial for a long time
6 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
With his new film 'Men' writer/director Alex Garland did a great job of conveying the feeling of paranoia, as the main character Harper struggled to deal with trauma in her personal life. Retreating to the countryside of England to relax and unwind after a tragedy, Harper can't seem to shake the idea that she's being watched, followed and creepily stalked - but is it real, or just her perception? Moreover why do all the men in the film resemble the same person?

Even the scenes set in broad daylight are creepy. Alex Garland layered beautiful landscapes with eerie silence to create this atmosphere as serene as it is nightmarish. You can feel the isolation and the looming threat as Harper's grip of sanity is slipping.

Everyone is talking about a particular scene that's already gaining momentum to becoming infamous. Indeed it is weird when looking at it on the surface level. I think it's really saying though, that trauma is essentially "born" from one event in Harper's life and that trauma kept giving way to more layers or "rebirths" . Look, there is a lot in this film that is open to interpretation and the whole thing is meant to challenge us as an audience and get us thinking.

So, what is Garland saying about men in this film? What is he saying about grief? Isolation? It's all for you to decide. Just know this film is really creepy throughout and delves heavily into surrealism. I'm still thinking about it and can't wait to see it again.

I wanted to love it
29 March 2022
I love Foo Fighters! I love horror! Soooo....what happened here? Well, this was an overly ambitious project that just failed to deliver. They tried to blend humor with the possession and slasher sub-genres, and rock. Now, this movie clearly is not to be taken seriously at all, but it was tough to get through anyway. Very few of the jokes landed (the stuff with Whitney Cummings is okay) there are no real scares and the acting is, well, super hammy even for a thing like this. The gore is decent but overall Ughhh..what a disappointment, sorry to say. Oh well, at least they tried.

Rest in Peace, Taylor.

Beautifully brutal
19 March 2022
X feels like a vintage 1970s film, yet it is the most original and genuinely scary slasher in years. Awesome performances, a haunting score and witty writing make this film stand out amongst the rest. The kills are insane! Will definitely be watching this time and again. Great job, Ti West.

Leatherface's boots are the best thing about it
19 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, the guy's footwear style slaps! Besides that, I didn't like this movie almost at all. Big fan of Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' it is iconic; undoubtedly one of the most terrifying films ever made. Even part 2 and some of the other entries in the franchise, I've enjoyed. But this film right here was just ridiculous. It consisted of one dumb character decision after another (they needed to go with the old lady in the ambulance AND back to the house to look for the deed? Really????), eye-rolling dialogue and a really tacky-looking Leatherface. Plus, he'd be something like 80 years old in 2022 so...yeah, there's that. Also there was no reason to bring Sally back. The gore is okay I guess but doesn't make up for the rest of the film being flat and not scary. I will eventually watch it again because t is a TCM film after all and I tend to give franchise films more chances even when I don't love them, but as of right now I can say this one is highly underwhelming.

Scream (I) (2022)
8/10
As a lifelong fan of the franchise, I'm happy to say 'Scream 5' is 🔥
14 January 2022
So, this isn't a requel, reboot, rehash or "re" anything. This is Scream 5. Let's get that straight up front. I'm not going into spoiler territory here, so I'll keep it vague. I will say, I loved how the new generation of Woodsboro teens are introduced - the main girl, Sam, is naturally easy to like and intriguing, as are the Meeks twins and their expanding circle of friends. Their connection felt reminiscent of how Sidney, Tatum, Randy and the others interact with each other.

Speaking of legacy characters, they're brought into the story of 'Scream 5' very smoothly and with good reason for being there. Dewey, Sidney and Gale all have their time to shine in this film, and it all plays out gloriously. If you're a fan, you'll be grinning ear to ear.

Ghostface is brutal! There are kills that are so savage I was actually shocked! Twists, turns and gore abound; this film absolutely pulls no punches. That's all you need to know!

Cinematography is good, direction is slick, writing is witty. This film has a good amount of parallels to the original but it's not over the top. This doesn't rely solely on nostalgia and that's a good thing in my opinion. I'm seriously impressed and will be seeing it again tomorrow, and many more times in my life.

All in all, yeah, 'Scream 5' is worth the wait. Wes Craven's spirit is indeed alive in this film! Great to see the franchise thriving with this strong sequel and I can't wait to see what's next!

The Medium (2021)
9/10
Disturbing
16 October 2021
'The Medium' is not your typical possession/exorcism film. A good amount of the film's first half introduces the viewer to Thai spirituality and the family dynamic of the central characters. Meanwhile, tension slowly builds revolving a teenage girls strange behavior, which is suspected to lead to something more sinister. The second half of 'The Medium' honestly is pure nightmare fuel. This movie pulls no punches as the plot moves forward; I was horrified by what was happening on screen -- and it was done without the use of your standard cliches in the exorcism subgenera. I won't say more on the plot. Just know this is a film not to be missed. Definitely a standout horror movie of recent times. Scary, smart, superb.

As good as part 1
14 August 2021
This sequel takes a fresh approach to the storyline of The Blind Man and once again, Stephen Lang rocked as did the young girl playing his daughter. The plot is more driven by action sequences this time, whereas the original had drawn- our sequences of suspense. Overall if you liked the first one, go see this. It's equally as enjoyable.

John Krasinski went all out this time.
12 June 2021
'A Quiet Place Part II' is an example of the rare instance in which a sequel surpasses its original. This film has all the same elements that made part one enjoyable, but on a larger scale. There is more action, more tension and the protagonists are better developed, especially the children, as their transition to showing bravery in the face of terror is very evident.

I think all the performances here are top-notch. In this film, facial expressions are everything. The scenes that have minimal dialogue, but rely on characters' actions and facial expressions to convey emotion, are what elevate this film past part one as well. The creature effects were also awesome and really keep you on pins and needles when the horror kicks in. The sound design is brilliant and makes this film an incredible theater-going experience.

All in all, I highly recommend it, I think it's a very impressive sequel and I look forward to the next installment. Well done, John Krasinski.

Cruella (2021)
6/10
This film has some very strong qualities, however it asks us to suspend disbelief too many times.
12 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have such mixed feelings about this film. The good pointe are, the performances are strong. Both Emma Stone and Emma Thompson really shine in their roles and I found myself engaged the whole time because of their presence. Also, the sets and costumes are top-notch, as are the music choices - very strong '70s vibes, and that intrigued me. I liked that Cruella/Estella had such an interest in fashion design, and how strong-willed she was, especially ones the "revenge" plot got going.

But yeah, on a deeper level, that's a big part of the problem- the revenge plot. When Cruella first confronts her idol-turned-nemesis-turned birth mother (yup, really), it's this big buildup...:and suddenly...she burns her dress without catching fire and has this big showdown...Wait, does she have magic powers or something? Really? That whole scene took me out of the film for a bit. It didn't match up with the context of how the story was going.

Then, the tension between Cruella and her adversary just sort of goes back end forth...Emma Stone does have a very good monologue at one point, where she accepts her dark identity...But otherwise, there were just too many situations in the latter half of the film that felt cartoonish and ultimately undermined what could have been a great story if it remained serious throughout.

Even the ending! The final showdown was lackluster. I expected more, and then once again, the film asks us to believe Cruella is suddenly a master skydiver or something. Uh, what??!

So I give this film a 6 because of the performances from Stone and Thompson, the costumes, music and cinematography. Everything was good expect for some really silly story decisions that I just can't overlook. The writers are asking too much from the audience. The serious tone of the film is overshadowed by those lazy decisions.

Maybe some of you will enjoy it more than I did. There are things to be liked...just not everything.

Suspiria (1977)
10/10
Unlike anything else in the horror genre
22 May 2021
What can I say about this unique trip into paranoia that hasn't already been said? Well, first of all, I just watched it for the first time and I was literally hypnotized by it, unable to look away from the screen. Dario Argento's 'Suspiria' is unlike any other horror film I have ever seen.

His use of colors and imagery is like looking at a kaleidoscope; the landscape of this film is stunning. This is not a typical bleak, dark horror film that relies on shadows and jump scares - no, no! 'Suspiria' is very bright, aesthetically pleasing to the eye yet very much in your face. Also, the use of sound is largely something that makes this film so terrifying. As our main protagonist delves deeper and deeper into the mystery behind this ballet school, Argento masterfully lets the tension gradually rise and rise.... Some scenes are so quiet and tense that you feel compelled to hold your breath. Then when the horror kicks in, you'll be open-mouthed in shock. This sure is Dario Argento's vision; we're witnessing a director who has his full creative confidence on display.

The music. Oh man, what a beautiful score. It is a collaboration between Goblin and Argento that is awe-inspiring, not only because it indicates the dread to come throughout the film but because it stays in your head long after the credits roll. It's as iconic as the beer horror film scores out there.

The performances are stellar. Right from the start, the characters are engaging, somehow intriguing yet sinister at the same time. The weirdness of the hierarchy at the school makes you want to keep watching and figure this out as much as our heroine does.

At this point, this is a legendary film. As a lifelong horror fan and first time viewer, I get it. Flawless, scary and very memorable. I can't wait to see it again.

CGI zombies can't even save this movie
22 May 2021
They actually make it worse because they look so terrible. I'm just gonna keep this short & sweet - the plot is non-existent, the characters are one-dimensional and there's no horror at all. Was looking forward to this and it failed. Next!

Excellent
3 April 2021
I went into this film with absolutely no expectations, knowing next to nothing about it. Man, am I glad I watched it - "Concrete Cowboy" is an inspiring film. While it is about horseback riding, this film is really about personal growth at its core. The central protagonist, Cole, goes through a journey of coming to terms with family, friendship and his own identity. The lifestyle of Philadelphia cowboys and the bonds they share with each other, as well as with their horses, ties everything together nicely. I was intrigued the whole time, especially by the strong performances the whole cast delivered.

A mixed bag (rating: 5.5)
20 March 2021
Director Bryan Bertino (The Strangers, The Monster) certainly understands the importance of creating a dark, brooding atmosphere in horror cinema. It's a huge contribution to the art of terror. That's the strongest trait that The Dark and the Wicked has going for it - the old, dark house and surrounding family farm with shadows lurking around every corner.

The film starts out promising, considering the setting I mentioned, combined with a set of offbeat but fairly interesting characters which comprise this strange family dynamic. The brother and sister are in the position of parenting their parents, really, as the father is terminally ill and the mother is emotionally unstable. So, the setup is very decent, and we as the viewer know there is a looming danger in the house, however it's not revealed right away.

As the film goes on, there become too many jump scares to keep up with. Which is a shame, because there are actually a lot of scenes with high tension to begin with, but for me, it doesn't pay off because the scares become too formulaic and predictable. All in all, this is a film revolving around the paranormal that doesn't really ever reach its full potential, as the elements of horror have all been explored before, and better. If you like slow-burn psychological horror, I'd say you can expect that in the first quarter of the film, but the rest of it just doesn't carry that same momentum.

If you like shows that make you think, with well-developed characters and a lot of mystery, 'Behind Her Eyes' is for you. Louise, David and Adele are all intriguing in their own right, which may lead you to identify with one or more of them. Very good performances from the cast combined with a story that's packed with twists, Netflix has delivered a great mini-series that will leave you wanting more.
