This movie ruined all other "time travel" movies for me...
but that's a good thing! The writers were brilliant in the way they had John having dual, and even multiple, memories. It makes sense... after all, he lived each and every one of them. I watched "Time Cop" the other night and found myself thinking "But that's not right... he'd have BOTH memories, wouldn't he??"
Seriously, I loved this movie. When I saw the trailers I thought it looked like it might be interesting, but I had no idea how good it would be. I'm biased, because the idea of the paradoxes that can be created by time travel fascinate me. If I travel back in time and somehow cause the death of my father before he met my mother, I cease to exist in this time because I never could have been born... yet then I couldn't have been here in the first place to travel back and cause the change, now could I, so my father must have lived, right??... which would have allowed me to be born so I could travel back, but then if he died I couldn't... well, you get the idea... that neverending paradoxial circle.
Suffice it to say that this movie makes you think while entertaining you every step of the way. If you haven't seen it, run, do not walk, to see it!
Field of Dreams (1989)
If you haven't seen this because you think it's about baseball... think again..
If you think this movie is about baseball, then you either haven't seen it or you have no heart and/or no imagination. It's about believing in yourself when no one else can or will... it's about second chances... it's about faith... it's about defying all that seems sane to follow something unexplained, yet undeniably real... and yes, it's a little bit about baseball.
I can't begin to explain all that this movie is about. Kevin Coster is good as Ray, the corn farmer who pursues his inexplicable (even to him) dream and reunites with his father; James Earll Jones is phenomenal as the radical turned almost hermit-like writer; Burt Lancaster is wonderful in his humble role as the almost-made it ball player turned doctor; Amy Madigan is feisty (okay, maybe a little too feisty, but cute nonetheless) as the whacky wife who never made it out of the 70's.
To sum it up... don't miss this film... if you can keep a dry eye, you have no heart... whether you're a guy OR a girl!!!
Heavenly Creatures (1994)
I kept watching, thinking it HAD to get better. It didn't.
Call me odd, but I thought this was a complete waste of my time. I tried watching it once and got about 1/3 of the way through before I turned it off. Then I decided to give it another chance, figuring it had to improve. It didn't. I understand that this was a true story and was, most likely, shocking to the community. I will also agree that it did, in fact, show the inner workings of an obviously insane mind (or minds). Nevertheless, I was bored out of mine.
Birdy (1984)
Thought-provoking, intense, wonderful film
Both Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage portrayed their characters beautifully. This movie is a definite "must see." The ending was unexpected, to say the least, and made one realize that reality is, perhaps, not what it seems.
