Dune: Part Two (2024)
Masterpiece
This was an absolute sensory feast. I haven't read the books, I found the story line to be a bit confusing probably because of the complexity of the universe that I'm guessing was much better explained in the novels. Having said so, it didn't really matter. I'm curious to find out more about the Dune universe and will be reading up on that.
Also the movie had strong Made Max Fury Road vibes but was much more intense in my opinion.
Cinematography, sound, music, lights, costumes etc. Absolutely stunning, acting was great too.
I really hope part 3 will be in the making
We need more movies like that.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
To people who complain about it being "unrealistic"
First of all I just want to say I have enjoyed chapter 4 so much, mostly for cinematography. The visuals, the lightening, the scenery, sun rises and sun sets were all shot beautifully. Fighting scenes were out of this world too.
I can't understand the negative reviews where people complain about lack of realism, lack of police etc. I don't think this movie is supposed to be approached in the same way as let's say Mission Impossible but more as a graphic novel/Marvel style of action that takes place in an alternate universe. You don't go to see Batman or Superman and then complain it's unrealistic do you?
The Son (2022)
This is really bad
You'd think that such an amazing cast would be enough to save a bad film but sadly not in this case. The dialogue was ridiculous so it's probably the script that should be blamed, not the director. Their conversations seem forced, not believable at all. The characters seem one dimensional, High Jackman is this super caring, super good dad, with a very cold and moody wife. His son who suffers from depression only says he's in pain and keeps repeating it over and over again without going into any details of what's actually troubling him. I understand depression can be difficult to explain but youd think there are more ways to express how you feel other than saying "I'm in pain". That young actor was also probably the worst thing about this movie, 90% of the time he just looks like he's smelling his own fart. All his lines are delivered in the same flat monotone way. Not a movie worth watching.
A Good Person (2023)
Not even Flo and Morgan can save this movie
As much as I love Florence Pugh, Morgan Freeman and always wonderful Molly Shannon sadly they werent enough to make this movie good.
As others have mentioned, it's too long, and the parts that should have been given more time (like Alison's and Ryan's friendship) happen so quickly they don't make this story believable at all.
Pill addiction is a subject beaten to death and films like Ben Is Back or Four Good Days were so much better at showing the ugliness of it.
A Good Person is full of cliches, the story line doesn't seem believable and I honestly didn't care for any of the characters. I was pretty bored when watching it and couldn't wait for it to end.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Are people seriously complaining about the story line?
This is one of the most visually beautiful films I have seen. It's not only visually stunning but it also teaches us important lessons about our environment, the family, and respect for the nature. The story line is basic but it needn't be more complicated, especially for the younger viewers (I think people forget that this is not an "adult" movie and adults are not the target audience here).
The amount of time and work that went to make this is clearly visible on the screen. I thought I wouldn't care about the new Avatar since it's been so long since the first one came out but I was wrong.
I can't wait for the 3rd installment.
Pearl (2022)
If you actually needed a reason to boycott Oscars this is it
I can't add more to all the reviews already written about the movie and Goth's outstanding performance, but I'll just say that if you ever needed a reason to let Oscars die, this is it.
The fact that, mediocre at best, Anna D'Armas was nominated for her horrendous performance as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, and Mia Goth was snubbed, should really be the final nail in the coffin for the joke commonly known as Academy Awards.
It boggles my my mind that Mia was not nominated.
Her acting is phenomenal and she was the heart and sould of this dance macabre film and the fact she co-written the screenplay is a further testimony of her amazing talent.
Causeway (2022)
Phenomenal acting
This is a slow burn and the best thing about this movie is the acting. Solid drama about two people who bond over their tragic past and develop friendship as their stories slowly unravel.
I love Jennifer Lawrence and her performance is very strong here but Brian Tyree Henry is truly outstanding. There is no overacting and no over the top emotions. Both characters do a really good job at showing their vulnerability, supporting actors are also very good.
I'm surprised to see this movie is currently rated 6.6 because it definitely deserves more, perhaps this will change as more people vote. Solid 8.0 from me.
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Not what I expected after seeing the trailer!
I loved the trailer when it came out and I expected something like Moon Knight. After initial ratings and reviews on imdb weren't too positive this movie fell off my radar but I am so so happy I watched it. I understand why people wouldn't like it if they were motivated by the trailer. It feels like a book in a movie version (not a movie based on a book) if that makes sense. Slow paced story, narrated by Tilda Swindon's character, heavily dialogue based, with visuals giving 2006's "300" movie. And few times when you think the film is coming to an end, and you predicted the ending, it surprises you with another twist. The ending is neither happy or tragic but it made me cry my eyes out. Such a beautiful story and new idea amongst the crappy Disney remakes and blockbuster hits sequels.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
I'm very confused about the high ratings
This was yet another sequel of an old classic that nobody really needed. I was really looking forward to this movie by the way, until I started watching it.
Acting feels very forced, robotic, and has zero realism to it, the same with dialogue, incredibly cheesy and it made me cringe. The entire film seems more like an ode to Tom Cruise who appears to want to prove that he still got it (lots of shots showing his arms, chest, putting t-shirt on, playing shirtless on the beach etc). Tom, you're a legend and you don't need to do that.
What I'm super confused about are the multiple reviews giving this film 10 out of 10 and people reacting with anger whenever some critic (there are very few of them) dares to say they didn't like it. It's a very similar situation to Black Panther which was a b class /straight to DVD movie but got critically appraised because of political climate.
I expect more big flashy productions with zero substance coming out as theatres need people to get back to the cinemas.
Five Days at Memorial (2022)
This incredible story deserves better
I'm wondering how many critics / viewers have rated this highly out of respect for the story. After watching first episode I'm not sure if I'll continue. As someone else mentioned, this does have a vibe of a Hallmark tv movie and even Vera Farmiga doesn't seem to have much to work with (although I'm sure many will watch it just for her, who doesn't love Vera). Hospital staff appears over the top gentle and empathic taking away from realism and acting is rather poor overall.
Real life events that took place deserve better than this.
Elvis (2022)
Moulin Rouge 2: Elvis Edition
Exactly the same as Moulin Rouge but about Elvis. Same pace, energy, acting, all done to look like a music video. Carnival/circus themes also present. I loved Moulin Rouge but it didn't work for me here.
Halftime (2022)
This documentary made me dislike her as a person
I was pretty much indifferent when it comes to JLo, I did like her music but I wouldn't call myself a fan. She portrays herself as a victim of misogyny and racism here, even calling herself a person of color. Girl, you could easily pass for a southern european.
She's moaning about not getting an Oscar nomination (that movie was so average and you can't act, accept it). Trying to show she was not taken seriously because South Park mocked her (South Park mocks everyone with amazing equality). Complaining people paid too much attention to her butt, an asset that people admired, not ridiculed.
The entire documentary is extremely self serving and comes across as whining of someone very privileged.
Life & Beth (2022)
Surprisingly good
This is giving Ricky Gervais' "After Life" vibes. I thought it would be just typical Amy Schumer (whom I always liked by the way) but the show had emotional depth and can easily be classed as tragi-comedy.
Unlike the others I loved it from the very first episode. Amy wrote and directed the show and it really showcases her talent. I laughed so much when watching it but I did tear up few times too. I feel like so many of us can relate to what Amy's character is going through.
The Northman (2022)
Absolute masterpiece
Few negative reviews below, about the film being boring, got me worried as I was looking forward to seeing it. Unnecessarily as I was glued to the screen the entire time, I literally cant understand how could anyone find this film boring. It's a bit of a slow burn at times with a kind of a Shakespearian dialogue being spoken (the movie is set in 10th century) but the cinematography, music, visuals, violence, references to Nordic/Slavic mythology and customs make this an amazing, violence and gore filled, yet beautiful journey. I will definitely be watching it again.
